Statement
• IEEE standards have achieved world-wide use and recognition by the public, industry and engineering professionals because of their high quality and usability. Our standards are based on five imperative principles: openness, due process, balance, consensus, and right of appeal. We need to continue to uphold these principles as the cornerstone of standards development.

• If I am elected IEEE 802.15.3a Chair, I will work with the SG to TG transition team and help them focus on a rapid development for an alternative PHY clause for a higher data rate amendment to standard 802.15.3 while still maintaining the "IEEE imperative standards principles."

Biography• IAN CHRISTOPHER GIFFORD ([email protected]) received a Bachelors in
economics from Boston University, Boston Massachusetts, in 1981. Ian is the current IEEE 802.15 WG Co Vice Chair and IEEE 802.15.1 Chair. Ian, now a consultant, worked for M/A-COM, Inc., a Tyco Electronics Company, in Lowell, Massachusetts after graduating from BU with a BA. In 2001 he left M/A-COM as Director of Standards. For the past 20 years he has been active in world-wide standards developments, including IEEE, IETF, TIA, ARIB, ATIS, ETSI, and ITU-R for wide area, local area and personal area networks. He has given multiple seminars on WPANs and is currently co-authoring the "The IEEE 802.15.1 Handbook." While at M/A-COM for 19 years, Ian had extensive experience with semiconductor materials, devices, RF integrated circuits, passive and control devices, antennas, subsystems and systems. He has specifically worked on 800 MHz Public Safety integrated digital trunked voice and packet data over an Internet Protocol (IP) based networks, 2.4 and 5 GHz RF Chipsets, 2.4 GHz Train Braking Systems, 24.125 GHz High Resolution Radar sensors based on a ultra-wideband (UWB) at 3-4GHz BW, etc. Additionally, Ian has extensive world-wide regulatory experience.

• "I have known Ian Gifford for the last six years while I was chair of IEEE 802 and Ian was the key person responsible for the coordination and standardization of Bluetooth Technology within the IEEE. Within this capacity, Ian had to work with many people, both engineers and lawyers, IEEE Standards Staff and University Professors and marketing people to drive this project. Ian was able to understand both the engineering, political and marketing tradeoffs in gaining a consensus within the Wireless Personal Area Network. Within IEEE 802, without Ian's perseverance in driving the IEEE 802.15.1 Standard for WPAN (Based on Bluetooth), this standards would not have happened. He single-handedly drove the balloting process in spite of numerous attempts to sidetrack this."
