Saul becomes Israel’s first king. The Israelites lived in Canaan for 200 years, and their
only king was the Lord. They wanted to live like other nations, and wanted to be
a monarchy. A monarchy is a kingdom or empire ruled by one person, either a king or queen.
God told Samuel to anoint Saul as king of Israel. God spoke to Saul through Samuel. Saul won many
battles and the Israelites were happy that he was king. Eventually Saul stopped listening to Samuel. God was displeased with Samuel, and would coose
another king.
