Dear friends,

When DuBose Heyward published his book Porgy in 1925, he likely had no idea that it would inspire one of the greatest musical works of the 20th century. The work, Porgy and Bess – by George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, and DuBose and Dorothy Heyward – has been called an opera and even a “folk opera”. With its roots on Broadway, the production premiered at the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon) on October 10, 1935. Since then, it has had no less than seven major revivals in New York City. In 1985,

it received its first-ever production at the Metropolitan Opera, with Iowa’s own Simon Estes singing the role of Porgy.

In 2011, a new revival opened at the American Repertory Theater, adapted by a team of fantastic contemporary American theater artists including Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks and Tony® Award-winning director Diane Paulus. This adaptation, now titled The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, was intended to be less operatic and more intimate than the original.

It was a resounding success. The show transferred to Broadway and it is the national tour of that production that we are pleased to present here as part of our Willis Broadway Series. Des Moines Performing Arts is an investor in this production ofThe Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess as a member of the Independent Presenters Network.

This is an iconic work and I love the new production. The characters are brought into much sharper focus than in traditional stagings, and the orchestrations by William David Brohn and Christopher Jahnke are incredible, performed in this engagement by an orchestra with many of Central Iowa’s best professional musicians.

The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 2012. Later this month, we present the 2012 winner of the Tony for Best Musical, Once. It is because of the support of our loyal donors and season ticket holders that we are able to bring the best of Broadway to Des Moines. So thank you, and please enjoy the show.

GEORGE GERSHWIN (Composer) was born in Brooklyn on September 26, 1898. George wrote 22 musical comedies, most with his brother Ira. From his early career George had ambitions to compose serious music, and his classical masterpieces include Rhapsody in Blue. In the late ’20s George became fascinated by DuBose Heyward’s novel Porgy, recognizing it was a perfect vehicle for opera using jazz and blues idioms. Porgy and Bess opened in Boston on September 30, 1935, and had its Broadway debut two weeks later. In 1937 George was at the height of his career. While working on the score of The Goldwyn Follies in Hollywood, he collapsed, and on July 11, died of a brain tumor.

DuBOSE & DOROTHY HEYWARD (Libretto/Lyrics). DuBose Heyward (1885–1940) was a native and life-long resident of Charleston, South Carolina. In 1923 Heyward married Dorothy Hartzell Kuhns (1890-1961), an aspiring author from Ohio. His novel

Porgy, was published with great success in 1925. Dorothy inspired, and collaborated in, the transformation of Porgy into a play, which ran a total of 367 performances on Broadway. The Heywards later collaborated with George and Ira Gershwin in the creation of the opera, Porgy and Bess, contributing the libretto, based largely on the play, and co-writing many of the songs, including “Summertime.”

IRA GERSHWIN (Lyrics), the first songwriter to receive a Pulitzer Prize (Of Thee I Sing, 1932), was born in New York in 1896. He wrote hundreds of songs for Broadway and Hollywood, the majority with his brother, George, but many in collaboration with composers Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, Harry Warren, Burton Lane, and Vernon Duke, among others. Nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Song, Ira also took great pride in his contributions to Porgy and Bess (1935), and in his acclaimed book, Lyrics on Several Occasions (1959). Ira died in 1983 at the age of 86.

Des Moines Performing Arts donor Lance Hanson has fond memories of the Des Moines Civic Center that go beyond productions, concerts and special events. In the late 1970s, when the Civic Center was being built, he was one of the ironworkers who hung thousands of rods, rails and stairway parts to help support the structure of the building. The job took about four months for 10 ironworkers, including Hanson, to complete.

Hanson recently went on a “behind-the-scenes” tour with Des Moines Performing Arts staff members to inspect his work from more than 35 years ago. He remembers calling the ceilings in the Main Hall “clouds” and the job being intricate. “When we hung all the rods, they had to be in a specific place and set in a specific height.”

Hanson was an ironworker for 18 years through Ironworkers Local Union #67 and is now a managing broker at RE/MAX Real Estate Concepts in Altoona. Although he hasn’t worked in the structural steel industry for several years now, the tour refreshed memories of Hanson’s experience at the Civic Center before it opened in 1979.

“This is just awesome – it’s so cool,” he said. It’s bringing back all of the thought and detail we put into the job.”

BA: Radio City Christmas Spectacular (2007), because it had so many weird things, like the live animals!

GT: Many times, I think about the last day I used the old sound system and then when the new one came in 2004.

NR: I was a part-time stagehand when the Civic Center first opened and then spent many years on the road touring with shows. When I would come back to the Civic Center, it was great working with the crew I worked with early in my career.

NR: When there are technical difficulties or challenges, we problem-solve and figure out how to make things right.

JS: We start talking to shows as early as one year in advance, even the smaller ones.

A FOLK OPERA IS BORN By Michael Egel

Porgy and Bess is composer George Gershwin’s magnum opus. He wrote it after more than a decade of studying the music of the African-American experience. He was drawn to ragtime as a young pianist.

But the initial idea for this work came in 1926 when he first read Dubose Heyward’s novel, Porgy. He enthusiastically responded to it as if to the voice of destiny and thus was inspired to write his first full-length opera. Gershwin composed the legendary music, and his brother Ira – in collaboration with Dubose Heyward and his wife Dorothy – wrote the lyrics.

Gershwin called Porgy and Bess a “folk opera.” His belief in the need for a label was strong and understandable as this work was questioned from the beginning. His lack of large-form compositional experience generated some doubt that he was truly up to the task. His conception of the work was that it would be a fusion of classical and popular musical traditions.

The show’s New York opening was at Broadway’s Alvin Theatre on October 10,

1935, with trained opera singers filling most of the roles. While jazz fans were dismissive of his use of African-American music, opera critics complained that Gershwin’s “opera” was basically just a string of hit tunes – thus it was not an opera. However, few 20th century composers have ever written songs as memorable or as powerful as “Summertime,” “I Got Plenty Of Nothing,” “Bess, You Is My Woman” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So.”

Although the first production of Porgy and Bess was by no means a flop, it did fail to return its original investment. In 1976, the first production of Gershwin’s complete score was given by the Houston Grand Opera. When that production was hailed as an artistic triumph, the critical tide finally began to turn. In the final analysis, despite its various production types and versions, Gershwin set out to write a masterwork. And that’s exactly what he did.

Today, it seems obvious that it is a highly successful work of art, demonstrated by more than nearly a century of performers’ commitment and audience acceptance. In retrospect, now that the 20th century can be viewed in its entirety, it is this writer’s opinion that Porgy and Bess stands alongside Britten’s Peter Grimes and Berg’s Wozzeck as one of the three most monumental operatic achievements of the last century. The 1976 performance of Porgy and Bess by the Houston Grand Opera was my first live experience of this masterpiece. While it was the first time the full score was performed, it was also the first time an American

opera company – rather than a Broadway production company – had tackled the work. Plus, it won both a Tony® Award (the only opera company ever to receive one) and a Grammy® Award. In 1985, I attended it at the Metropolitan Opera (starring Iowan Simon Estes and Grace Bumbry), a successful production which went on to appear in several seasons at the Met.

In the summer of 2012, I was in New York meeting with Todd Gershwin (the grandson of the “other” Gershwin brother, Arthur) about a project. He offered me tickets for the latest production of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, which his family had endorsed. What my wife and I did not expect was to witness one of the most moving, engaging and creative productions in our extensive Broadway experience.

I noticed the 23-piece live orchestra

immediately – something that has become almost extinct on Broadway. The sound was glorious, with the perfect balance and harmony between actors and musicians. Indeed, the plot had changed, along with the score and dialogue from the opera world, but actors Audra McDonald, Norm Lewis and David Alan Grier were marvelous. It felt like we were actually transported to 1930s Catfish Row.

George Gershwin’s music is a combination of genius and authenticity. His New York jazz roots, combined with his keen awareness of southern black folk music traditions of blues, spirituals and work songs, was innovative and perfectly appropriate. The new twists in the score made the evening even more special.

Yes, there have been some critics who questioned the purpose of shedding new light on an iconic work like Porgy and Bess to speak to today’s generation. In the orchestra world, I deal with this dilemma all the time. But great live theater productions and concerts are not museum pieces, where we dust off the artifacts and place them back on the shelf. Great productions respect tradition but are not bound by it, and I believe creating something current and new with this in mind is what makes live performance so exciting and relevant.

The morning after we saw this revival, Todd Gershwin asked, “How did you like the show?” My response was, “Your Great Uncles George and Ira would have been proud.” ___________________________________________Maestro Joseph Giunta is celebrating his 25th anniversary as the Music Director & Conductor for the Des Moines Symphony.

BINOCULARSBinoculars are available for rent at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters for $5.

BRAILLE AND LARGE PRINTPlaybills for most Broadway productions are available in Braille at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters, compliments of the lowa Department of the Blind. Large print playbills are also generally available.

CAMERASThe use of cameras or any type of recording devices in the Main Hall is prohibited at all times.

CELL PHONESPlease turn your cell phone off or set it to the silent mode. Please also refrain from text messaging and using your phone as a light source during the performance.

CHILDRENChildren younger than five years old are typically notpermitted in the theater. At designated family-orientedproductions, however, children of all ages are permitted. Everyone must have a ticket, regardless of age. A limitednumber of booster seats are available at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters.

COAT/ITEM CHECKCoats and other personal items may be checked at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters during all Main Hall performances.

CONCESSIONSBottled water is permitted in the Main Hall during all

performances. Souvenir cups with lids are availablefor purchase and are allowed in the Main Hall during designated performances. No other food or drink isallowed in the theater.

ELEVATORSElevators to the second level are located in the NollenLobby and near the Stoner Theater.

LATE SEATINGLate seating will be accommodated by House Staff at the earliest appropriate time. Pay attention to lobby chimes, which are sounded five minutes before the show begins, as well as after intermission.

LISTENING DEVICES Listening devices are available for use at no charge at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters.

LOST ITEMSLost items may be reported or claimed at the NollenLobby Guest Services Counter during an event. Afteran event, please contact our Ticket Office at (515) 246-2300 or stop by Monday through Friday, 9 am. to 5 p.m. Itemsare kept for 30 days.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE If you have a medical need, please notify the House Staff. Medical services are provided by UnityPoint Health – Des Moines in the Prairie Meadows Lobby.

PRE-ORDERING DRINKSAvoid the line at intermission by ordering your drinkahead of time. Order and pay at any open bar beforethe performance. Pick your drink up at the Nollen or Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counter during intermission.

SPECIAL SEATING NEEDSSeating is available for all performances for a variety of accessibility requirements (including wheelchair,motorized cart, difficulty with stairs and sight impairment).Please call the Ticket Office at (515) 246-2300.
