Explain (draw, dictate and write) who George Washington is by sharing a fact about him and one story that is not true. Use the book Our First President, the portrait “‘Parson Weems’ Fable” and video “Ask History: George Washington and the Cherry Tree” to help with your explanation. 

Extend: Explain (draw, dictate and write) if you think it is okay to make up a nice story about someone. 

Student response: 

G.W. our father of our country. G.W. did not cut a cherry tree down. It is not nice to make up stories because you will not no the fact.

“Adapt For Safety” First GradeA project for protection

Students worked in teams to research adaptations from plants or animals to design and create a safety device for human use.

This team used research on animal paws to create specialized safety gloves.

Students were required to use reading, writing, speaking & listening skills, as well as collaboration and problem solving skills to complete this project.

Group members commented:

“these glovs help to not get blisters”

“we got the suckhin cups from a starfish”

• Chemical Tests Science Unit

Prompt:

You and two friends are making the Hawaiian turkey sliders. One of your friends says the sliders are an example of a homogenous mixture or solution. Your other friend says the sliders are an example of a heterogeneous mixture or suspension. In your opinion, which friend is correct ? Use what you learned about the different types of mixtures from the article and video to support your opinion.

After completing the 3rd grade Science Unit, Chemical Tests, students watched a video (“Mixtures”) and read an anchor text (“Hawaiian Turkey Sliders”) in order to respond to the prompt.
