Fine Session

Sergeant: PP Stephen Castelli

Ian C & James: Ian putting words into the mouth of James. Father’s Day: Most of us had to pay up. Mike N: Put the place names out, seating a bit lop-sided tonight. Mike referred to Stephen Thompson as Senior Sergeant when in fact he is Inspector. Lee D: Taken up bowls. James S: Rocking up with a $50 note. Genevieve C: Collingwood let Essendon win, being kind to them. Mike N: The only member to admit to getting a traffic fine in the last 12 months. Sam C: Heard bashing the ears off our catering lady. Those members who regularly parked in the front yard copped a fine for the privilege. Brian Mc: Fined but we don’t want any of the foreign money from the East. John W: Seen with two bread rolls on his plate. Ian C: Must have been expecting a boring Guest Speaker tonight, brought along a book to read. Ian C: At home doing some gardening, lost his phone. Nowhere to be found, someone suggested ringing it, good idea. Faint sounds coming from the rubbish bin, phone buried under a pile of gardening stuff.

Polio this week 9th September2015

A case of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2) has

been reported with onset of paralysis on 20 July 2015 in

Bamako city, Mali. The virus was isolated from a 19-

month old boy of Guinean nationality. The closest genetic

match to this case is from a case from Kankan, Guinea,

with onset of paralysis on 30 August 2014. The genetic

changes suggest that the cVDPV2 has been circulating for

more than 12 months. Discussions are currently ongoing

with national health authorities to plan and implement an

urgent outbreak response.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is proud to partner

with the Global Citizen Festival on 26 September,

featuring Ed Sheeran, Pearl Jam and other headliners to

help fight extreme poverty and inequality around the

world, and support approaches that will make life more

sustainable for people and the plane.

Guest Speaker: Inspector Stephen Thompson

Officer in Charge Kwinana Police Station

Introduced by PDG John Iriks.

The then Sen. Sgt Stephen Thompson, started his new

position last February when he took over from former

officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Glen Willers,

A police officer in Northern Ireland for about

14 years, Stephen said he moved to Perth in 2001

with his family and had been working in the Perth

metropolitan region ever since.

"When I came to Australia and I was continuing my career development I wanted to do different

things I hadn't done before," he said.

"I was in prosecuting division, I even ended up in forensic division as an accident … but during

the past 12 months I found myself wanting to go back to frontline policing, which is the role I

had always done and always enjoyed." Stephen says the position at the Kwinana Station has

ticked all the boxes.

Inspector Thompson spoke to the meeting about the new Frontline 2020

Policing Model and how it is designed to meet the needs of our community.

The Metropolitan Police Operating Model introduced September 2014

is designed to deliver a more personalised service to the community, effective and efficient

response and improvements in investigation quality.

The four- district model provides WA Police with a sustainable approach that takes into

consideration both current and future demand for policing.

Kwinana has four teams operating, 1: Baldivis. 2: Bertram, Leda, Wellard. 3: Orelia, Parmelia.

4: Kwinana Town Centre, Medina, Calista, Hope Valley, Mandogalup, Naval Base, Postans, The

Spectacles, Kwinana Beach.

Problem Oriented Policing: Identify, Analyse, Develop, Evaluate.

Community Partnership: City Council, City Rangers and Security, Youth Centres, Shopping

Centres, Local Government and State Government Departments.

Keeping in Touch: Emergency only: 000 Contact Police, immediate response: 131 444

Each team has a mobile phone contact number and will respond when able to a non-emergency

query or issue.

Inspector Thompson and his team extensively use Social Media i.e.: Facebook

and Twitter to get crime information out there and to solicit the help of the

public in identifying suspects and or recognising stolen goods etc.

PDG Bob Cooper thanked and commended Inspector Thompson on the new

initiatives being provided by Frontline 2020.

What Gender is a Computer ?

A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated

as either masculine or feminine.

"House" for instance, is feminine: "la casa."

"Pencil," however, is masculine: "el lapiz."

A student asked, "What gender is 'computer'?"

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked

them to decide for themselves whether "computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun.

Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men's group decided that "computer" should definitely be of the

feminine gender ("la computadora"), because:

1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;

2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers are incomprehensible to

everyone else;

3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and

4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your pay cheque on

accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ("el computador"),

because:

1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;

2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;

3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and

4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have

gotten a better model.
