DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMME

Introduction

WHO IS IT FOR?If you are seeking to understand your equine better, both to improve their quality of life and strengthen your relationship with them, then this brand new pack is for you.

It will give direction for further study and allow you to analyse and evaluate popular training and management practices so that you can find a path that suits your ethics and your horse’s needs.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?This pack will give you an insight into the function, purpose and cause of common behaviours. In addition, you will be able to improve your horse’s welfare by meeting their ethological needs. By applying scientific research to training you will have a more profound level of communication with your horse, making learning more efficient, effective and ethical. All of this combined will result in a deep and understanding relationship.

WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE?This pack contains 3 units that will be sent to you via email; ethology, learning theory and behaviour modification. You will also be provided with a reading and resource list to complement your learning, giving direction for further study in this area.

Each unit has a task at the end, where you will get chance to test your knowledge and skills and submit it back for feedback.

The last task is to video you applying all that you have learnt by working through a positive reinforcement shaping plan.

Throughout the pack you are entitled to email and over the phone support and guidance should you need it. Additional video lessons, articles and resources may be forwarded to you during your study as and when they become available.

The content of each unit is broken down in the rest of this booklet. However, please note that this content may vary as it is currently being constructed.

DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMME

Behaviour Modification

Learn how to apply your new knowledge from unit 1 and 2 in order to create effective and ethical behaviour modification plans. This unit will teach you how to use positive reinforcement successfully without causing problems such as frustration and confusion. You will be given the building blocks to start thinking about your own behaviour modification programmes and to continue training positively.

FINDING THE CAUSEAll too often people argue that ‘you can’t stop a bolting horse with a treat’ as a limitation of positive reinforcement training. This is true, however the difference between positive reinforcement training and using forceful techniques is that you will learn to address the route of the problem rather than the symptom of it. So, instead of trying to stop a bolting horse we can teach him not to bolt in the first place!

DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMME

SHAPING Understanding how to use shaping and successive approximations is essential to any behaviour modification programme. This will make your training more effective and therefore you and your horse will be more likely to reach your goals.

USING POSITIVE REINFORCEMENTLearn the basics of how to use positive reinforcement while avoiding common beginner’s problems.

Avoiding frustration and arousal Timing Applying the schedules of reinforcement Using a discriminative stimulus What to do if it’s not working Administering the rewards Karen Pryor’s RAIT

TASKYou will be supplied with a basic shaping plan of 3 common beginner’s concepts to work through with your horse. While working through the concepts you will be required to video yourself training them, and send the footage for feedback. This way any issues that may be arising can be identified and addressed, and you can receive help in any bits that you might be struggling with.

You will also be supplied with blank shaping plans to work with after completing the distance learning programme.
