8. ( c o n t d . ) Ysleta, along v?ith Socorro and Spn E l i z a r i o , was o r i g i n a l l y

on the west bank of the Rio Grande. However, on January 12, 1849, a major f l o o d changed the course of the r i v e r and cut a new channel which placed the three v a l l e y towns on the east or Texas side of the i n t e r n a t i o n a l boundary. Accounts of the e f f e c t of the p e r i o d i c f l o o d i n g of the Rio Grande are obscure; however, i t would appear t h a t such f l o o d i n g must have damaged the mission.

I n 1907, most of the church was destroyed by f i r e . I n an e f f o r t t o r i d the b e l f r y - t o w e r of bats, a sexton placed several buckets of sulphur and other chemicals i n the tower overnight. The chemicals i g n i t e d during the n i g h t and destroyed most of the s t r u c t u r e . Only the s a c r i s t y remained unscathed. A few of the r e l i c s , i n c l u d i n g the o l d mission b e l l and a statue of C h r i s t which had been brought from Spain, were saved. The church was r e l b u i l t almost immediately, u t i l i z i n g the o r i g i n a l s a c r i s t y and the remaining w a l l s .

The mission at Ysl e t a was founded by Franciscans, was l a t e r secularized and, since 1881, has been administered by the J e s u i t Order. During the mission's long h i s t o r y , i t has been named Mission de Corpus C h r i s t i de l a Ysleta, Mission de Sen Antonio de l a Ysleta, Mission de Nuestra Senora de Monte Carmelo, and I g l e s i a d e l Carmen.

The headquarters f o r the Tigua I n d i a n Community also adjoins the mission plaza.

The Tiguas are a displaced branch of the Tiwa-speaking Puebl^ Indians of c e n t r a l New Mexico. The Tiwa's strong, i n g r a i n e d s p i r i t of s u r v i v a l and r e t e n t i o n of ancient c u l t u r e could not be b e t t e r i l l u s t r a t e d than by the Tiguas, who s t i l l e x i s t today as an i n t a c t group of Indians w i t h many f a m i l i e s of pure I n d i a n s t r a i n l i v i n g i n the small community o f Ysle t a i n the c i t y of El Paso.

Each year they f a i t h f u l l y perform t h e i r I n d i a n r i t u a l dancing i n the plaza i n f r o n t of the Ysleta Mission church which t h e i r forebearers constructed, as wards of the missionaries nearly three hundred years ago.
