Our last season was a hard act to follow – the wonderful Tashi Lhunpo monks caused quite a stir –but you won’t be disappointed with our January to March programme.

Music has been one of the most successful aspects of the new Corn Hall, and 2012 will continue tooffer a winning mixture of the adventurous and the crowd-pleasing. Britain’s best bluesmen, PaulJones and Dave Kelly are back after their sell-out concert last year, while in February, excitingklezmer band, Moishe’s Bagel and the acclaimed Clara Sanabras bring a captivating fusion of folkand world music. Rock fans will be delighted by Limehouse Lizzy and Queen II and perennialcountry favourite Raymond Froggatt returns in March.

Our theatre line-up has a Shakespearean theme. Mere Players celebrate the Bard in February, inspired by the RSCs Open Stages national programme, and Roughcast Theatre Company presentShakespeare’s most deliciously despicable villain in their production of Richard III. In March,Eastern Angles take us back to 1940 in their atmospheric new production Private Resistance.

Our Saturday Club – monthly matinees for the whole family – gets better and better. This seasonNutmeg Puppet Theatre Company present their enchanting show Pip’s Wildlife Garden, we’ve ascreening of Disney’s new Winnie the Pooh, and Backhand Theatre Company perform anadaptation of the much-loved children’s story, The Velveteen Rabbit. We have a superb selection of films for you too – every Wednesday evening, as well as our ClassicMatinee once a month. Look out for Ken Loach’s moving Oranges and Sunshine, the hugelyenjoyable Win Win and the much-praised Jane Eyre.

For your regular supply of laughter, don’t miss Red Card Comedy Club, now on the last Friday ofevery other month and Luke Wright’s Stand-Up Poetry Club – this season featuring the brilliantElvis McGonagall. Those are the stars of today but what about the stars of tomorrow? From January, the Corn Hallbecomes an Arts Award centre, open to young people between 11 and 19 who want to explore newcreative experiences and gain a nationally recognised qualification. You can find out more in the adon P21.

A very modest success in 1952,Singin’ in the Rain is now widelyregarded as the best filmmusical ever, and a wonderfullyobserved comedy in its ownright. Gene Kelly directs, choreographs and plays the starwho can make the transitionfrom silent films to talkies. LinaLamont (Jean Hagen) cannot, and thereby hangs a tale ofsubterfuge, singing, dancing, romance, comedy – and somerain. Donald O’Connor’sroutines are classic. Oranges and Sunshine (15) DoubleIndemnity (PG)Directed by Jim Loach, 2011

UK, 105 minsWith Emily Watson, Hugo Weaving, David Wenham

Ken Loach’s son Jim shows his genes in this deeply movingdirectorial debut. It’s the truth about the shameful secret ofchildren in care who were illegally shipped from Britain toAustralia – as late as the 1960s. But it’s no documentary, rather acompelling yet unsensational drama, scriptedby Rona Monro. Emily Watson is outstandingas Margaret Humphreys, the British socialworker who investigated the scandal andhelped the adults discover their identities andfamilies. It’s a stirring tribute to half a lifetime’swork which culminated in an official apologyfrom the British and Australian governments.

“Now is the winter of our discontentMade glorious summer by this sun of York”

With these immortal lines, on to the stage comesShakespeare’s most charismatic and most completevillain. And before the audience can draw breath, Richardof Gloucester, youngest brother to the newly-crownedking, has already begun to map out his bloody andcorpse-strewn path to the throne.

RoughCast’s typically high-energy and fast-pacedperformance ensures that the audience will take as muchdelight in Richard’s blackly humorous rise to power as

Richard does himself;and then beenthralled as thebrutal tyrant (like somany before andsince) desperatelytries to hang on topower.
