Game 3, Kick 1 December 26/27, 2007 1 Disney’s Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea Football Club Welcome to all play- ers, coaches, college coaches, families and soccer lovers to the 8th annual Disney’s Soccer Showcase, presented by Chelsea Football Club. I am looking forward to another great year of top flight soccer competition at Dis- ney’s Wide World of Sports® Complex and our approved off-site venues. I want to person- ally thank each and every one of you for coming and showing your support for the event. We believe we have compiled the best of the best and that the 2007 Disney’s Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea Foot- ball Club will be our best tournament yet. This marks the second year in which the event fo- cuses on the true Showcase age groups, U15-U18. We moved the younger age groups to Thanksgiving weekend and just completed our second Disney’s Ju- nior Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea Football Club. By moving the U11-U14 age groups, we have expanded our field for the older divisions and created room for more talent to come through. This year’s tournament will showcase some of the most elite soccer clubs in not only the United States, but Canada and England as well, including Chelsea Football Club’s Academy U16 boys team that will be competing in the top Showcase flight. Then, in our US Youth Soccer ODP division, you’ll see the top ’90 and ’91 Regional teams com- peting for a Disney’s Soccer Showcase tro- phy, an award that has never been offered in the past. Also new this year, we have included the U15 and U16 boys and girls USYS National League teams as part of the competition. In closing, I want to wish all the teams good luck, good sportsmanship and most of all, a good time at this year’s Disney’s Soccer Showcase, presented by Chelsea Football Club. I hope this tournament enables all your athletes to showcase their talents and prove their determination. Welcome to the Proving Ground! Welcome to all play-ers, coaches, college coaches, families and soccer lovers to the 8th annual Disney’s Soccer Showcase, presented by Chelsea Football Club. I am looking forward to another great year of top flight soccer competition at Dis-ney’s Wide World of Sports® Complex and our approved off-site venues. I want to person-ally thank each and every one of you for coming and showing your support for the event. We believe we have compiled the best of the best and that the 2007 Disney’s Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea Foot-ball Club will be our best tournament yet.

This marks the second year in which the event fo-cuses on the true Showcase age groups, U15-U18. We moved the younger age groups to Thanksgiving weekend and just completed our second Disney’s Ju-nior Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea Football Club. By moving the U11-U14 age groups, we have expanded our field for the older divisions and created room for more talent to come through.

This year’s tournament will showcase some of the most elite soccer clubs in not only the United States, but Canada and England as well, including Chelsea Football Club’s Academy U16 boys team that will

be competing in the top Showcase flight. Then, in our US Youth Soccer ODP division, you’ll see the top ’90 and ’91 Regional teams com-peting for a Disney’s Soccer Showcase tro-phy, an award that has never been offered in the past. Also new this year, we have included the U15 and

In closing, I want to wish all the teams good luck, good sportsmanship and most of all, a good time at this year’s Disney’s Soccer Showcase, presented by Chelsea Football Club. I hope this tournament enables all your athletes to showcase their talents and prove their determination.

Coaches Corner with John Kerr Jr.

Leading the men’s soccer program at Harvard University, John Kerr, Jr. enters his ninth season with the Crimson and has tallied an eight-year record of 69-53-11. A former Hermann Trophy recipient, a two-time first team All-America, and member of the Duke University 1986 NCAA Championship team, Kerr is no stranger to collegiate soccer. Kerr’s program has been highlighted by 12 All-Ivy League

First team selections and since 2003, 20 players have been named to the All-Conference list with three of the last four Rookies of the Year being Crimsons. Kerr also guided his team to a national ranking of 13th at the conclusion of 2006 (14-5-0), winning the Ivy League championship and advanc-ing to the second round of the NCAA Championship.

1. How did your soccer journey start? My father played pro soccer so it started early.

2. What motivated you to take up coaching? After my father stopped playing he coached, so he passed along the bug to me.

3. What is your coaching strategy? I am a very offensive minded coach who encourages the play-ers to use their imaginations and creativity. I love watching the likes of Kaka and Ronaldinho play.

4. What do you look for while recruiting a player?

The first thing I do is assess if they are making good decisions and executing. A lot of players see or try to do the right thing but cannot execute it. I try to find the players that can do both.

5. What advice would you give a player looking to attract the attention of a college coach?Make good decisions, have fun and work hard!!

6. What are some things a parent can do to get their player noticed?Get them into a good program and be supportive.

7. If you had the chance to coach any player who would it be and why?Lionel Messi, a fantastic young player with great skills who would make any team a threat!!

8. What is the best part of coaching?Seeing players and teams achieve and players enjoying them-selves.

9. What is your favorite coaching moment?Winning the Ivy League in 2006.

10. If you weren’t a soccer coach, what do you think you would be doing?Good question….something in soccer but [I’m] not sure exactly what.

11. Define “Coaching” in one sentence.Coaching is enabling and empowering the players you work with to make good decisions once they step out on the field and play.

Chelsea FC

In 2007, English Premiership side Chelsea Football Club became presenting sponsor of Disney’s Soccer Showcase Series. One of the biggest and most suc-cessful clubs in Europe, the team they call “the Blues” boast some of the best players in the world, including England captain John Terry, and their famous stadium Stamford Bridge sits in the heart of a fashionable part of London.
