There is fresh coffee and espresso brewing again in the village of Marcellus!

The cozy coffee and sandwich cafe, First Cup, recently opened its doors on Main Street.

The mother and daughter team of Karen Pollard and Jessica Weirs are the new proud owners.

In addition to the return of the popular original chicken salad, First Cup offers Panini grilled sandwiches and wraps.

“We’re here to stay,” says Weirs. “I’ve never been happier.”

Weirs says she plans to continue to add items to the menu. “It’s an opportunity to see what we can do.”

Portions of the village-scape in Marcellus recently underwent a charming make-over.

McClurg Remodeling and Construction Team, using grant money secured by Southern Hills Preservation Corporation, recently completed renovations to the facades of three properties in the village.

The changes are a wonderful improvement to our community.

The Greater Marcellus Community Chamber along with The Marcellus Optimists are planning an extra special event to ring in the holiday season this year. Join your neighbors and friends for Starlight Shopping and the annual Tree Lighting Ceremonies in the Village of Marcellus, Thursday December 4, 2008 from 5 PM to 9 PM.

At 6 PM, a special Christmas Tree lighting ceremony is planned starting with the Town of Marcellus tree in the empty lot next to the Marcellus Town Hall on Main Street. Once the Town’s tree is lit, carolers will sing as we continue down Main Street to the Village Christmas Tree

located at the point in front of the Marcellus United Methodist Church.

Marcellus High School Music Teacher Brian Ackles and his specialty chorus of high school students will lead the crowd in Christmas carols.

Even Jolly Ole’ Saint Nick will make an appearance escorted in on horse & carriage and assisted Marcellus Cross Country star athletes Chris Stogsdill, Elizabeth Dean and Jesse Garn, before retiring to a comfy chair inside the Ralph Share American Legion Hall on Main Street to listen to children’s wishes. The Marcellus Optimist Club will provide complimentary hot chocolate while visitors snack on treats donated by local merchants.

New this year, free horse & carriage rides provided by Chariots of Downtown and donated by The Marcellus Optimists. The free rides will begin at 5 PM and run until 8 PM. The route begins on North Street opposite Subway Restaurant. The route is North Street right on Maple Street, right on Orange Street, right on Main Street and right on North Street. The carriage comfortably holds two adults and four children. There will be opportunities to disembark and re embark along the route.

Also new this year, The Greater Marcellus Community Chamber Small Business Exposition, from 5 – 9 PM in the new party room at The Chocolate Pizza Company, 60 E. Main Street. Here’s your chance to find out the talents of your neighbors and friends!

“This is just a sample of the small town charm Marcellus is famous for. It’s a great night to get your Christmas and community spirit flowing, sing some songs and visit with friends,” said Starlight Shopping Chairperson AnnMarie Clark. “And don’t forget, while your husband is in line with the kids to talk to Santa, all the shops will be open!”

There will also be a special Starlight Shopping raffle drawing for store gift certificates. Eligible shoppers must have a special Starlight Shopping Star Pass stamped at six different merchants.

There is nothing that warms the heart more than a quiet little hometown covered in snow. The town and village of Marcellus sparkles when it snows. In addition to looking like a scene pulled out of Frank Capra’s beloved movie “It’s a Wonderful Life”, Marcellus comes alive in the snow with many outdoor winter activities. There are miles and miles of cross-country ski trails to explore. Marcellus’ Baltimore Woods located on Bishop Hill Road is a winter wonderland. Snowmobilers find Marcellus a welcome respite along their way with easy access to fuel for their machines and their bellies!

There are plenty of snowmobile trails in the Town of Marcellus. Many snowmobilers begin their explorations from Marcellus Park. The Marcellus Snowmobile Club works very hard to keep trails around Marcellus groomed and accessible all winter.

In Marcellus..Nature Abounds!

Nine Mile Creek runs right through the Town of Marcellus. There are miles and miles of trout-laden stream to entice sport fishermen. The drive along Route 174 between Marcellus and Camillus is one of the prettiest roadways in all of Central New York.

Where There is Nature...There’s Adventure! Orenda Springs is located in the Town of Marcellus on 130 acres with gorgeous woods, miles of trails, ravines, streams and a pond. Facilities include a large indoor horse riding arena with a real rock-climbing wall, natural amphitheater, tipi, several group camping sites, and a ropes course that has been called “the most unique course I have ever seen” by a nationally accredited inspector. Orenda Springs is a non-profit organization incorporated to assist people in improving themselves and their relationships with others.

hundreds of Dwyer’s nature images prints, framed (ready to hang) and unframed. The collection also includes images that can be viewed on two electronic viewing stations in addition to dozens of photographs on display and ready to take home.

“Since all images are custom printed, any image I have can be printed to the

customer’s size requirements and framed to fit any décor,” says Dwyer. Still, some people find it difficult to envision a photograph they may like on their wall at home or in their office. So, “we have a ‘photo test drive’ policy. With a small deposit you can ‘test drive’ the photo and see what it looks like on the wall at home. I don’t know of anyone else who does this,” he says.

“The kindest people I’ve ever met live in Marcellus,” said Marlene Stenuf. “It is a really nice, family-oriented town.” She also liked the fact she could design the perfect studio from the ground up for her voice and piano classes.

After You Visit the Village...

Judi West, owner of Patchwork Plus located along Route 20 in the Town of Marcellus, stands among her more than 7,500 bolts of high quality fabric in her new 5,000 square foot showroom.

Quilting and sewing enthusiasts will want to visit the popular quilting shop, Patchwork Plus, along Cherry Valley Turnpike (U.S. Route 20) near the intersection of Rt. 174 in the Town of Marcellus.

Owners Judi and Tom West say they started the shop 19 years ago with a dream and 250 bolts of fabric. Now the store houses more than 7,500 bolts of high quality fabric brought in from all over the world displayed over 5,000 square feet.

The wonderful new space incorporates natural light from skylights, high ceilings and a country lodge-feel. Among the bolts and bolts of fabric of every

color imaginable, there is a stone fireplace complete with rocking chairs.

West says her new place includes a room for sewing and quilting classes. “We have classes in basic quilting and sewing machine use. We can teach you how to make any kind of fabric craft including purses, wall hangings and even how to knit!”

Already West says she has had visitors from all over the country in her shop. “Quilters never leave home without their Quilter’s Travel Companion book. A true quilter is always on the look-out for new fabric and patterns. Each shop you visit is a little different.”

Patchwork Plus

Vernak Farms Country Store, 1889 East Lake Road in Borodino, offers grocery convenience plus a number of unique items and gifts. Owners Christopher and Charlene Vernak hope to keep expanding what they offer to meet the needs of local people.

Christopher and Charlene Vernak operate a country store that features local products and convenience items so local families wouldn’t have to travel far for milk, meat, soda and beer.

Vernak says the store also carries many gift items and country collectibles. “We’re always looking for ways to expand to meet the local needs,” she said.

It’s Time to Toddle the Town

Grammie’s Pantry’s Susan Smith offers a truly unique experience for friends looking for a relaxing get-together.

There is a place, not far from Marcellus, that offers a quiet, get-away for friends looking to de-stress and enjoy happy conversation. It’s called Grammie’s Pantry Tea Room and Gift Shop. Located in an old-fashioned, little red school house nestled in the woods 11 miles south of the village of Skaneateles, Gammie’s Pantry is most famous for their elegant six-course English Afternoon Tea which features authentic, home-made items including scones with lemon curd and Debonshire cream.

Grammie’s Pantry also offers a light lunch menu which includes sandwiches, salads, soups and desserts.

“All of our menu items are prepared from scratch with much love and care,” explained Grammie’s Pantry’s Susan Smith. There is also a variety of gift items for purchase.

Smith says it all began 16 years

ago when she began baking cookies and other pastry items to sell from her 1817 schoolhouse. In addition to being the perfect tea hostess, Smith is now famous for her original cheese spreads and cinnamon buns.

Gammie’s Pantry is offering a special Dickens’ Christmas Tea until December 22nd. Reservations are required at 315-636-8111. All the food is specially prepared for your party.

Grammie’s Pantry is open for drop-ins from April to December between 11 AM and 4 PM. Reservations are suggested for lunch, but not required. Reservations are always required for English Afternoon Tea. From January to April, tea parties and lunch parties of six or more are welcomed by reservation only.

Every Friday night year round, Marcellus Bluegrass hosts an evening of old time music at the Ralph Share American Legion Post on Main Street. Participation is encouraged. Donation at the door.

Bluegrass has become Marcellus’ Natural Resource of Fun

It’s like stepping back in time to a country dance in a Kentucky holler. For the past seven years, a unique jam session, which started with three Bluegrass musicians looking for a place to play, has grown into a Friday night sensation at the American Legion hall in the Village of Marcellus.

All you need is an instrument and the ambition to play. Or you can sit back, keep time with your foot, sing-along and share a cup of coffee or a cookie.

“Sometimes we get upwards of 70 people or more,” explained one of the phenomenon’s original pickers Bob Hayden of Marcellus. “And some weeks, it all fits together so well, we’re playing until two or three in the morning.”

The cost is only $2 per person to pay for the heat and lights.

“We like to hear any type of music,” said Hayden. “We have two fellows who sing ‘Danny Boy’ so well, it’ll bring tears to your eyes.”

Some are seasoned, others are newly musically motivated. “We’ve had many spectators turn into players,” said Hayden. “It’s contagious, I guess.”

Hayden says he and his two friends, Jack Burns and Thom Russell began playing together just for fun in a hangar at the Marcellus Airport. When cold temperatures forced them to look for a place indoors, they found a new home at the Marcellus American Legion.

Hayden says they are grateful to Sam Murphy, the American Legion hall’s caretaker, who lives upstairs. “We’re fortunate he is a little hard of hearing. When he gets tired, he just goes upstairs and turns his hearing aid off. He just reminds us to turn the lights off and lock the door when we’re done,” Hayden said.

So remember, your seat is saved every Friday night beginning around 7 P.M. at the American Legion Hall in Marcellus.
