FROM PORTOFINO TO FLORENCE

Embark on a breathtaking route beginning at Belmond Hotel Splendido in the glamorous Ligurian resort of Portofino, made famous in the dolce vita era by stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner.

A number of fantastic drives begin in Taormina, home to Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo and Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea, and an ancient Greek Theatre, still used today for grand productions.

Nearby, the fertile lower slopes and moon-like craters of Mount Etna can be explored by SUV. On the volcano’s western flank lies the tiny village of Bronte, where pistachio nuts, nicknamed “green gold”, are cultivated in the rich soils.

Further down the coast, the seaside village of Acitrezza is steeped in legend: the off-lying trio of tall rocks resulted from the mythological Cyclops, Polyphemus, hurling missiles at Odysseus.

Heading inland, Piazza Armerina is home to the majestic Villa Romana del Casale with its immaculately preserved Roman mosaics. Close by, Caltagirone is famous for its ebullient ceramics, which capture the sun-kissed landscapes in swirls of colour.

In Sicily’s south-east corner lie the sumptuous, honey-coloured baroque towns of Noto and Modica; Modica is equally renowned for its Aztec-inspired chocolate. A captivating place for a seafood lunch is the timeless fishing village of Marzamemi.

MALLORCAN LANDMARKS

From Belmond La Residencia in Deià, drivers can choose to head north-west to Cap de Formentor, or eastwards to discover the island’s capital and other treasures.

The first route takes in the picturesque port of Sóller, famous for its succulent prawns (gambas de Sóller) and orange groves, and a delightful place for lunch or coffee.

It continues on the exciting Tramuntana mountain route towards Pollença, before snaking along the dramatic peninsula road to Cap de Formentor, and its beautiful lighthouse.

The return loop passes Valldemossa, an exceptionally pretty village, which is home to the 13th-century Carthusian monastery once inhabited by Chopin.

The second circuit leads to the vibrant capital, Palma de Mallorca, whose towering gothic cathedral and enchanting old quarter demand leisurely exploration.

Further along the coast, the elegant Port of Andratx, popular with yacht owners and film stars, is a magical place for lunch. On the return drive to Deià, a stop at Banyalbufar affords the chance to visit the Torre de ses Animes watchtower for unsurpassed panoramas over mountains and sea.
