Before you start

Look through the idea, front to back.

The ideas in red are just ideas. Students should add to these.

The reason for the worksheets, at the end of the book, is to help you work

systematically through the material. Worksheets are helpers and can be a distraction

from the rhythm and sequence in your teaching. By putting them at the end they

become support pages versus places to stop, giving a smoother presentation.

DiscoveryIn the beginning of each story you will have a few questions to discover what you

know, or think you know about a story. The Title of the article/ story will be givenand you will be asked to discover the story by asking good questions.

In the second part ofdiscovery you will be asked to find words which you do not

know. Some of these may be highlighted already in bold. Definitions will follow to

help you discover what the writer is talking about.

Discovery will help youform a plan for the discussion and debate.

DiscussionDiscussion is not a debate, though it can quickly become one if there are strong

opposing ideas in the group.

Discussion can be a part of the discovery before you read the story. It may also come

after to discuss the ideas of the story. Sometimes a persons views may change after

reading the article, which is a good way to start a discussion.

Discussion is interaction without a lot of structure. Be careful not to confuse

discussion with argument.Debate is about argument. Discussion is about sharing

your views and interacting with others who want to expand or give a differing

viewpoint.DebateDebate is a structured idea. It means that only one person speaks in turn, and with a

specific point to address. It also has a time limit, so the speaker must be precise in

their argument. In a debate the key is to listen and be prepared to oppose the other

teams ideas. It takes research, a lot of work, and patience.

In the following story we want to begin with discovery ideas. What can you know

from a title, if you dont know about the topic?

In discovery you will form ideas to create basics ideas for an outline. In discussion

you will ask questions to help you build an outline for your viewpoint. In debate you

will separate the outline into two sections, for and against. At each stage you will be

able to use what you have learned before, to expand on your ideas and understand

both sides of the issue.

Eileen Mosca of the Grandview Woodland Community Policing Centre shows some

of the gnomes that have been turned into them. A mystery man, strangelyobsessed with garden gnomes, is prowling the Commercial Drive area of east

Vancouver.

"We call him the Feng Shui Bandit," says Eileen Mosca, vice-president of the

Grandview Woodlands Community Policing Centre. "He'll go into your yard and see

if your garden gnome orbird bath is, say, on the left ofyour path and he'll move it

to the right," Mosca said yesterday. " If residents put them back where they were, he'llcome back and move them back again. Sometimes the balding Asian man in his

mid-30s steals the items and drops them offbehind businesses on the Drive, saidMosca.

"The problem is, he started to take fish from people's fish ponds, but he neglected to

take water. The fish, alas, do not make it."

During warmer weather he has snatched birds in cages from porches and droppedthem off at nearby businesses. The birds usually ended up with the SPCA.

Some bemused business owners have been dropping the stolen items off with thepolicing centre in Grandview Park.

"We have cartonsof this stuffin our Centre, like garden gnomes, birdbaths, and

bird feeders," said Mosca. "We have some really nice plants in nice ceramic

holders."

Mosca said the man is suffering from some sort of obsession, and has been active for

about two months. He usually roams the area between Venables Street and 4th

Avenue.

"Maybe, in his mind, he's doing everyone a favour. If you follow feng shui, andhave everything in its place, good fortune and energy come to you."

Several residents and business operators have confronted the man. In each case he

muttered that he was sorry and ran off.

"It's no crime of the century. Poor soul! This is his compulsion," Mosca said.

banditA bandit is like a thief or robber.

turned into them -- This means given to them. So if you turn in something it is

something usually lost and found, or stolen.

obsessedThis is a strong word which gives us the idea of not having the ability to

control your actions.

prowlingThis word is like hiding or moving secretly looking for something. It is

like stalking but different. Stalking is used for following and harassing.

Prowling is following for not determined purposes but usually looking for

something not harassing.

bird-bathThis is a cement bowl put into the garden for the birds to splash and bath

in.

left ofThis is the position of the Gnomes by the Bandit. Left to right.

baldingThis means the hair on his head is beginning to become very thin showing

his skin on his head.

drops them offDrops them off means to leave them somewhere. Turning them in

means the person who finds takes responsibility. Drop of has no

responsibility or connection to the item dropped off.

snatchedThis sit to kidnap or take by force. Like a purse-snatcher. It is quick and

not gentle most of the time.

porchesA porch is a part of the house. It is usually along the front of the house

giving shelter and relaxation room outside.

bemused -- This is like to become confused.

cartons of this stuffThese are boxes used for identification and storage of the stolen

property

ceramic holdersCeramic is different than the cement or plastic birdbaths. It is shiny

and often more coloured. The purpose is to hold plants and decoration.

Feng ShuiThis is an ancient religious philosophy focussing on the harmony of

everything in the world.

confronted mutteredConfronted is a strong word. It gives a high emotion and a

strong purpose. Muttered is the reaction of this confrontation or asking

direct questions.

poor soulThis is not a reference to his bank account. Rather to his ability to lessen

the obsession.

compulsionA compulsion is not as strong as obsession. But is linked with the idea

of not having the ability to stop doing something. Like a strong habit.

In debate you will have a statement not a question. You have to react to the statement

with facts, not opinions.

Discussions are based a lot on opinions and answer questions. This is wherethese two ideas, though similar, are different.

Debate is about facts and statements.

When you make a statement, from a story,you must consider what the coreissue is. If you have made a good outline, you will have this already

discovered.

These are all good arguments that you would want to research for your argument, or

write in your essay. Build the argument starting from Why? Once you have

determined the Why? you can find facts to support your idea.

Religion is important. They should be free to do what their religion requires,even it causes discomfort to others.

People have paid for their space, so should have freedom to defend it, even ifit causes danger to others.

Communities should encourage diversity to avoid extremism.

Before you start choose one of the above statements to focus on. Choose afor or against position.

Research to find FACTS for your position.

List the facts.

Write out your argument in a long paragraph format. Include the oppositeposition in your writing.

You need to write out both sides so you can understand theother sides argument.
