The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Ministry of Science and Technology, has its missions in promoting research and innovation to enhance the competitiveness of Thailand strategic industries and the quality of life of the Thai people. To this end, NSTDA has worked

closely with entrepreneurs and large corporations in various areas including technology transfer, technology infrastructure provision, human resource development as well as contract and joint research activity. In so doing, NSTDA partners with organizations such as the Federation of Thai Industries, the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Revenue Department, many universities and research institutes, and so on. Automotive and auto-parts industry has played a significant role in Thailand’s industrialization efforts over past decades. NSTDA, the Thailand Automotive Institute, and Green World Publication Co., Ltd., have joined forces to develop this Directory of Thailand Auto Parts Testing & Testing Equipment Services. The directory is the first ever compilation of testing-related service providers for automotive and auto-parts industry in Thailand. The objective of the directory is to support the industry’s effort to enhance the product quality as well as to the engineering capability. The directory also reflects NSTDA commitment to the automotive and auto-parts industry.

On behalf of NSTDA, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the survey participants for their provisions of extensive data compiled into this directory. Nowadays, the current situation of automotive manufacturing industry in ASEAN has changed, since many leading automotive manufacturers have made some of their major investments in Indonesia and other member countries. As manufacturers are attracted by the Indonesian market which is larger and

demands more varieties of automotive type than those of Thailand. Due to the continuous growth of Thailand’s export turnover in auto parts; as expected, there will be a significant growth this year. As Thailand has been the auto parts manufacturing base for many countries for a long time, Thai auto parts manufacturing industry will likely be the most demanded in ASEAN. As a result, Thai auto parts manufacturing industry; which is mostly joint venture among foreign countries or 100% Thai owned companies, has a great potential of future expansion.

Henceforth, the export turnover of whole vehicle may decline while the export turnover of individual auto parts will increase. This assures that Thailand will be the leader of automotive industry in ASEAN; particularly, for small car and Eco car.

With the mission to support the operation of both government and private sectors to develop each part of Thai automotive industry and accomplish tasks as planned; for example, production efficiency, design, R&D and technology development in standard and inspection, product testing, human resource development, database, etc., Thailand Automotive Institute (TAI) is realized that this would be a great opportunity for operators in auto parts manufacturing industry and relevant parties to develop their products and production technologies. These would generate a larger income for Thailand. In order to accomplish such goal, operators would need a comprehensive guide to sources that provide automotive analysis and testing in order to enhance quality standard of Thai auto parts as well as to ensure that Thailand will be the ASEAN’s leading automotive industry country.

Secretary General, Thailand Board of Investment

The automobile and parts industry greatly helps generate a large amount of income, particularly from exports, which are ranked second after computer and electronics parts. The Federation of Thai Industries reports that the number of automobiles manufactured in the country is mainly for export,

and shows significant increase especially for one ton pick-up trucks.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) says that the automotive parts industry in Thailand is considered the best in South East Asia in terms of variety, quality and standard. Currently, Thai auto parts manufacturers could supply parts up to 80% of the domestic pick-up truck manufacturing, while passenger vehicles are up to 55% part localized. Those parts included engines, transmission systems, suspension systems, steering systems, body, electronics systems, brake, clutch, air-conditioning, tires, wheels, windshield and interior parts, etc. In addition to Thai entrepreneurs, most overseas investors from Japan, Europe or America who made investments in Thailand encourage their suppliers to invest in Thailand, which makes Thailand’s automotive industry strongly developed, while industrial newcomer countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia are too far off compared to Thailand in terms of a strong and high standard supporting industry and skilled specialists.

In addition, under the new investment promotion policy 2015-2019, the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) has a policy to promote new investments in the automotive industry. The key is to strengthen the supply chain by promoting the creation of a new champion vehicle production and automotive parts that use advanced and green technology or energy saving parts, all of which require effective testing and inspection processes.

In order to maintain the high quality and set the premium standard for the automotive and parts industry of Thailand, all related entrepreneurs and agencies need to be concerned and control every step of the manufacturing process. As a result, all updated testing and inspection related activities become a key factor to sustain the competitiveness of the Thai automotive industry; however, there is no single database to support auto makers in Thailand.

By providing current information of automotive parts analysis and testing sources and services in a single database, the Directory of Thailand Auto Parts Testing & Testing Equipment Services 2015/2016 will be a great tool to facilitate this collaborative effort. investment in Thailand, while there is even more spaces available for some newcomer investors to set up their manufacturing bases in the country.

In order to maintain the standard in automobile & part manufacturing industry, the quality control is considered as the key to achieve that which for over 34 years, Thai Automotive Industry Association (TAIA) has helped enhancing the competitiveness of automotive and parts industry by providing useful information on the innovation and manufacturing technology to its members and all stakeholder in this related industry so that they can produce the high quality automobiles and parts to reach the market requirement.

Even though Thailand currently is the leader for automotive parts manufacturing in ASEAN, it is necessary for the country to make well adjustment and preparation in order to take up the highly increasing competition in the near future. However, Thailand may not be considered as the only

automotive parts manufacturer anymore since most investors are seeking for other manufacturers deriving from the rising energy and personnel costs. Thus, Thailand should prepare to maintain its leadership position within this region.

It’s been over 37 years that Thai Auto-Parts Manufacturer Association (TAPMA) has supported its members in automotive parts production and manufacturing quality to be able to meet or exceed international standards in the global market. Thus, from an intensive competition in the world market, Thai automotive parts manufacturers also have gotten some impacts from the market condition as well. Therefore, we need to add values and build confident for the car makers and consumers as well. To be able to accomplish that, our members would need a good source of information on automotive parts analysis and testing facilities to maintain their premium quality standard of automotive parts production.

In the beginning the electrical equipment and electronics of cars were merely two headlights from batteries, but in the present various systems of cars have been developed

greatly when compared to the starting age. Numerous electrical systems and electronics were contained in cars such as the ABS brake system, headlight ballasts, electrical mirror systems, electric chairs, crash prevention equipment, digital cameras for installation on cars, radio signal reception systems and image signal reception systems, wireless sensor equipment, and various kinds of telecommunications equipment. Additionally, there was also the use of digital cameras on cars to observe the interactions of drivers to detect sleepiness or drunkenness. All this was done for greater safety and to reduce accidents on roads. All of these various electrical equipment and electronics each work on different frequencies and may result in frequency interference from the DC area to many GHz and interference with other electronics systems that were originally installed on the cars to malfunction as well.

Electronics and Communications Systems outside of cars

In the present, many companies are progressing with the development of electronics communication systems for communication uses outside of cars with other cars and traffic networks on roads. This system was called the Intelligence Transportation System (ITS), where this aforementioned technology was applied in the present with a frequency as high as 5.8 GHz, or radar’s frequency area for the ability to detect the movement of other cars on the road to order the engine’s speed control system and brake system while moving too close to cars in front, or for use in investigating traffic routes as well.

The Standards and Testing of Electronic Equipment for cars

Interfering Magnetic Signals on the inside and outside of cars

As the majority of a car’s body was metallic, the important components of a car’s structure are thus that of a conductor and an electromagnetic reflector. Thus, when a radio antenna or small satellite dish is installed onto a car body, radio signals will be reflected along the car body, which caused the interference signals of each equipment installed in cars will end up interfering with each other. At the same time, the car’s structure, which is metal, that will create the emission of electromagnetic signals; it is the car’s structure that will give the car the properties of a large antenna that can receive radio, television, telephone, or other signals into the car. Thus, various electronics equipment installed on cars and those sensitive to electromagnetic waves may receive highly interfering signals as well and may be the reason for malfunctions. For example, radio and television signal receivers may crackle, GPS systems may incorrectly pinpoint locations, all to the ECU system order wrong commands, etc. Sometimes, this could be a reason for decreased efficiencies in radio and image signal reception in the car.

Furthermore, the interfering electromagnetic wave signals that spread from the environment along typical roads may interfere with the function of various electronics equipment such as when cars run past areas with wind power substations, power transmission lines, radio transmission poles, television transmission poles, or telephone poles along the road, etc. If the electromagnetic fields that spread from this equipment while functioning were highly concentrated or have close frequencies with the functions of electronic circuits, they may interfere with the functions of electronics equipment in the car as well. Thus, all car producers will give importance with testing for the efficiency of resisting electromagnetic interference of various equipment in cars before distribution in the market to reduce risks in recalling products when sold in the market.

Standards for Automotive EMC Testing

For cars produced for distribution to be safe for use, control agencies in the United States of America such as the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the CISPR and ISO/IEC agencies of the European Union have appointed standards to test various properties of the car as well. The universal standards for automotive equipment testing were divided into several groups such as mechanical testing standards, reliability testing standards, EMC standards for vehicle and electronic sub-assemblies (ESA), etc. As for the comprised electronic equipment of cars, important testing standards exist as international standards down to manufacturers’ standards. In these groups, each company inserted additional testing topics or higher testing intensity levels from the typical standards as the electronics equipment or the regulatory parts of each company were not alike. As for the classification of electronics equipment testing standards for each kind of car, they can be divided according to levels as follows.

• International standards, which are o The standards of the International Standards of Organization (ISO) o The standards of the International Electrotechnical commission (IEC/CISPR) • Local standards, which are

o The EU directive of 2004/104/EC or e-mark o The standards of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) • National standards, which are

o The standards of the Japanese Automotive Standards Organization (JASO) o The standards of the Chinese national standards (GB/T) and o The standards of the Thai Industrial Standards Institute, etc. • Manufacturer standards

Electromagnetic Compatibility Standards

Automotive EMC for automotive equipment testing can be divided into 2 parts, which are Electromagnetic Emission (EMI) testing and Electromagnetic Susceptibility (EMS) testing.

1. Electromagnetic Emission (EMI) Testing is the testing of interference signals that spread from electronics circuits to interfere with the function of other kinds of electronics devices installed in cars. EMI testing for electronics in cars can be divided into 3 types, which are • Conducted Transient Testing is testing of the spread

of electromagnetic signals that changed as a discontinuous time along conducting wires or electric wires in cars such as the opening and closing of various control relays in the car used in on and off switches of headlights, windshield wipers, etc. • Conducted Continuous Testing is the testing of the

spread of electromagnetic signals with continuous changes in signals and many frequency areas following conducting wires such as the spread of interfering radio signals in cars during function to interfere with the telephone system functions in cars, etc. • Radiated Emission Testing is the testing of the spread

of continuous electromagnetic signals and frequency areas through air such as the spread of interference signals from the function of radio signal reception systems or the television reception set outside of the functional frequency area to interfere with ECU function, etc. 2. Electromagnetic Susceptibility (EMS) Testing is the testing of immunities against interfering electromagnetic signals spread from other electronics circuits in cars to interfere with the functioning of electronics equipment that we are interested to test, of which EMS testing for electronics in cars can be divided into 5 types, which are • Electromagnetic Static Discharge (ESD) testing is

the testing of the ability to resist voltage created from accumulated static charges created from the functioning of electronic equipment in cars in low temperature, low moisture conditions from turning on air conditioning in

cars or from the grating of drivers’ clothes with car seats made of rubber or polyester. Drivers may use fingers to touch radio and television buttons in cars. After that, static charges will interfere with or destroy electronic circuits inside those equipment, etc. • Electromagnetic Radiate Immunity (RI) Testing is the

testing of the ability to resist electromagnetic signals that spread through air from the functioning of other electronic circuits in the cars that interfered with electronics equipment of interest for testing such as the spread of electromagnetic waves from Bluetooth ystems to interfere with the functioning of radio reception devices in cars or television reception devices in cars and creating crackling sounds, etc. • Magnetic Field Testing of magnetic fields from electrical

and electronics equipment installed in cars to interfere with the functioning of electronic circuits of interest for testing such as magnetic fields from the alternator or di-start in cars to interfere with the functioning of radios in cars and create crackling signals, etc. • Conducted Transient testing of continuous transient

signals spread in conducting wires to interfere with the functioning of electronic circuits of interest for testing, such as the spread of interference signals of radios installed on cars that interfere with ECU functioning, etc. • Voltage Fluctuation testing is the modelling of the

alternator’s or battery charger’s functioning conditions, which normally would cause ripples in voltage that supply various electronic circuit while functioning. This voltage would be sent to supply other electronic circuits if that equipment are unable to resist this rippling voltage and malfunction such as the turning on and off of radios during function, etc.

For electromagnetic compatibility testing, aside from being divided according the past topics, they are also divided into testing for whole vehicles and for electronic sub-assemblies (ESA), which has different details. With this, electronics part manufacturers should obtain an understanding and study important tests, which are

1. Conducted Transients Emission testing according to ISO 7637-2 standards 2. Conducted Continuous Emission testing according to CISPR25 standards 3. Radiated Emissions Standards for ESA testing according to CISPR25 standards4. Conducted Immunity Standards for ESA testing according to ISO 11452-4, CISPR25, and SAE J1113 standards 5. Car Electronics Equipment Electric Field Immunity testing to ISO 11452-5 CISPR25, and SAE J1113 standa rds 6. Radiated Immunity testing according to CISPR25, 2004/140/EC (e-mark), ISO 11452-2, and SAE J1113 standards7. Concentrated radiated Immunity testing according to CISPR25, 2004/140/EC (e-mark), ISO 11452-3, and SAE J1113 standards8. Static Discharge testing according to ISO 10605 standards9. Conducted Transients Immunity of ESA Testing according to ISO 7637-2 standards

Electromagnetic compatibility testing for ESA according to universal standards such as CISPR 12, ISO 7637, ISO 10605, and others can be used as guidelines for research and development

to raise the standards of automotive products in the country to comply with further universal, local, or national automotive standards. For OEMs, the use of knowledge from these standards for the design of standardized products will enable the delivery of products to leading car producers. This is to increase Thailand’s competitive potential and help support state policies that push for Thailand to continue to be the center of car production in this region, especially with the official opening of the free market of the AEC in 2018, in which there will be inevitable competition in aspects of skilled labor, design engineers, researchers and developers, production factories, and other sectors.

In recent years there have been interesting developments in automotive part industry. Materials technology has played an important role in developing more efficient and yet reliable

alternatives for the industry. World-leading vehicle makers have increasingly used alternative materials in a number of models, particularly high-performance cars. Alternative materials have been introduced to replace conventional ones in several parts and applications. Interesting replacements of materials for automotive parts may be shortlisted as follows:

• advanced high strength steel vs. conventional steel

• cast and wrought aluminum alloys vs. cast irons

• composite materials vs. metallic alloys

• bioplastic vs. petro-based plastic

These material replacements are governed mainly by efforts toward improvement of fuel consumption and environmental friendliness. Designers and engineers in automotive industry have successfully made technological advancements addressing such efforts. Appropriate uses of alternative materials such as high strength steel, aluminum alloys, and composites help reduce vehicle weight resulting in improved efficiency. Environmentally, bioplastic is interesting as it represent green material.

Some Aspects of Materials Technology for Automotive Part Industry

Nevertheless, it should be noted that there are important aspects concerning the uses of such alternative materials. Generally, the advanced materials are relatively more expensive than their counterparts. In addition, for particular materials such as advanced high strength steel and composites, manufactur-ing processes can be more difficult and costlier. Principles and practices regarding part manufacturing are different to a greater or lesser extent. Particular differences are design and manufacture of mold and die, design of process conditions as well as operations pertaining thereto. Conceivably, automotive part suppliers who deal with these alternative materials have to acquire appropriate technologies and develop their capabilities accordingly. Or they may become uncompetitive.

MTEC, as a national materials technology center, has realized that it is very important to support local part suppliers so that they stay technologically competitive. MTEC researchers and engineers have conducted several series of collaborative and contract research and development with the suppliers. For example, an emphasis has been placed on die design and manufacturing process design for stamping of advanced high strength steel in order to overcome a troublesome problem called spring back. Concurrently, Cluster Program Management of NSTDA, under Manufacturing and Service Industry Cluster, has also run a technology acquisition program for local part makers.

The program has arranged oversea experts to participate in collaborative projects. There are three key parties in each project regarding material and its manufacturing process technology. These are an oversea expert, MTEC or Thai university researchers, and engineers assigned by the maker participated in each project. This technology acquisition program covers the following areas: forming process for advanced high strength; complex extrusion process for wrought aluminum alloy; advanced molding for plastic. An important goal is to strengthen Thai researchers and engineers as well as the local part makers in order to become technologically capable and competitive.

In addition to the contribution related to materials technology, MTEC and NSTDA have also promoted modern enabling tools in terms of digital engineering and manufacturing. These are, for instance, CAD/CAM/CAE, RP/RT, 3D Printing, automation and industry robot. Appropriate use of these modern tools can help shorten lead time in launching new products, improve product quality, and reduce product cost.

Abstract

An increasing number of high profile recalls have proved that even industry leaders in automotive technology are not immune to functional safety issues. ISO 26262 provides an automotive safety lifecycle that covers management, development, production, operation, service and decommissioning. Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)

and their suppliers risk losing their competitive advantage if they fail to implement the requirements of ISO 26262. They also often approach functional safety as an afterthought following product development, rather than as an integral part of the design process, spending millions of dollars rectifying issues, rather than avoiding them from the start.

Introduction

ISO 26262 was published in 2011 to address the increasing complexity of safety-relevant electrical and electronic systems, and is now recognised as the state-of-the-art functional safety requirement. The standard covers safety-related systems that are installed in series production passenger cars, and include one or more electrical and/or electronic (E/E) system.

While ISO 26262 is a complex standard, it will help OEMs to improve the safety of their product, minimise risks of product liabilityand help them remain competitive.

ISO 26262 contains 10 sections, which provide a system of stages to manage the development process:

The ISO 26262 framework deals with product related requirements that define properties which can be observed as specific safety-features in the final product, as well as process related requirements that reduce the probability of systematic faults (but cannot directly be observed as a feature of the product).

Following a number of functional safety related issues that have put lives at risk and cost the industry dear, few automotive OEMs and suppliers will dispute the importance of the standard. However, while the necessity to improve functional safety in the automotive industry has become widely accepted, many will agree ISO 26262 is a

• Provides an automotive safety lifecycle (management, development, production, operation, service, decommissioning) and supports tailoring the necessary activities during these lifecycle phases.

• Provides an automotive specific risk-based approach for determining risk classes (Automotive Safety Integrity Levels, ASILs).

• Uses ASILs for specifying the item’s necessary safety requirements for achieving an acceptable residual risk.

• Provides requirements for validation, verif ication and confirmation measures to ensure a sufficient and acceptable level of safety being achieved.

Figure 1 shows a useful diagrammatic representation of the various elements required to achieve compliance.

While it is not demanded by the standard, it would be best practice to initially perform a gap analysis. This is an assessment of your existing processes and products against the requirements of the standard.

Typically the process involves the internal and independent third-party functional safety experts investigating key issues of the development process and/or technical product or system. These processes are outlined within ISO 26262 and include documentation, management

processes, technical functions and risk analysis. In TÜÚ ÜÜV SÜ ÜD’s experience, this can usually be accomplished over a week long workshop.

The definition of the item is the first of these stages, which means identifying when it is necessary to achieve functional safety and what the required safety functions are. A risk assessment process, carried out according to accepted principles of risk assessment, is the best way of achieving this. This approach, for example, defines which actions of a product are defined as safety-relevant and which are not safety-relevant.

A safety goal can then be determined for every hazard identified. For example if one of the safety requirements identified is an airbag, a potential hazard may be the airbag initiating unintentionally and the safety goal would be to prevent this.

The result of the risk assessment is the Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL), which is a measure of the potential risk and determines the activities and methods required to

address the risk in an appropriate manner.The ASIL is defined by the level of risk based on a combination of the probability of exposure, the possible controllability by a driver, and the possible severity if a critical event occurs.

The ASIL is defined in four steps, from ASIL A (the lowest amount of risk reduction) to ASIL D (the highest amount of risk reduction), with the standard detailing the minimum requirements according to the assigned ASIL. This is a key component for ISO 26262 compliance, as the ASIL, and therefore the hazard level, is determined at the beginning of the development process, and the intended functions of the safety system are then analysed with respect to those possible hazards (Figure 2).

The next stage is to ensure that the defined safety requirement performs as its design intended, which must include accounting for failures of the underlying hardware and the prevention of systematic faults. The identified safety goals, which define the safety requirements, must also be implemented as specified by the appropriate ASIL, with suitable processes and methods implemented.

This is achieved by defining a functional safety concept, with the technical aspects detailed in a technical safety concept, together with a safety design (or safety

architecture), that determines the hardware and software safety requirements. Using the airbag example, a safety architecture could be defined that stops the airbag inflating unintentionally, but ensures it protects the driver in a crash.

It is also necessary to formulate a plan that closes any conformity gaps. Should, for example, the hardware layout of a safety relevant electronic system leave a high risk of malfunction when there is a short circuit, the plan would outline how the layout (design) needs to be changed to prevent this. It would also describe how the design will be technically

modified, the still safe interaction of the modification with other systems and the supporting documentation required. This will ensure all activity is documented correctly so, if there is an incident, it can be re-assessed at a later date. This is also required even if no change to the layout or concept was necessary. It is crucial for such measures to be taken early in the process as changes become more costly and time-consuming in later stages.

Verification that the system meets the assigned ASIL is also a vital stage. This is achieved by a specialist, either in-house or

a qualified third-party, running appropriate tests and analysis to determine the safety function’s mean time between failures.

Many that have experienced the implementation of ISO 26262 fully understand the value of obtaining an external assessment, as well as certification. This final step involves

attaining a technical report or certificate from an independent assessor as a proof of conformity to the latest standard. For example, TÜV SÜD provides testing based on your development documentation and on-site assessments. as leading automotive manufacturers in markets such as France, Germany, Japan, Korea and the United States will often only accept reports or certificates endorsed by reputable third parties.

While ISO 26262 sets out the complex ‘functional’ steps that must be taken towards compliance, you must first ensure that your business has the expertise required to understand how ISO 26262 relates to your products and, if required, how to implement any changes towards conformity. This can either be achieved through training existing staff, hiring functional safety specialists to become

part of your staff, or outsourcing the work to an independent third-party.

It is vital that relevant staff fully understand the content of ISO 26262, the required documentation and the key issues in each of its ten sections.

Achieving functional safety requires more than just an understanding of the technical requirements of ISO 26262. For successful implementation there must be a culture where employees at all levels ‘live and breathe’ its mantra.

Functional safety is an extension of quality management that can only work if all employees adhere to high standards.

For example, a major safety issue can be caused if just one out of the hundreds of engineers involved in the development process misses an activity or uses the wrong method.

To help OEMs and suppliers achieve this cultural consistency, appropriate management processes must be in place, including the strict execution of safety rules and tools.

Creating a culture of functional safety

Functional safety is anextension of qualitymanagement thatcan only work if allemployees adhere tohigh standards.

Nowadays, motor vehicle has been developed, continuously, with the objective to fulfill consumer’s need which causes production of many kinds of vehicle. The key of development

are considered from economy, safety and useful Life (longevity of vehicle), which are related. The economy is deliberated over engine and chassis. Engine is studied and developed to obtain more efficient and powerful driving engine unit while the weight of chassis, as a burden of engine, is needed to be decreased. The concept of automobile weight reduction is limited by vehicle safety that needs to consider the strength of parts. Basically, there are two methods for weight reduction which is either the replacement by using light weight materials such as aluminum, plastic, composite and such alike or part size reduction by using a higher strength grade steel.

Pressure to reduce fuel consumption in vehicle design has been the driving force behind High strength steel development for more than two decades now. Simultaneously, the substitution of other metals (non-ferrous) has been applied to some parts of car. For example aluminum alloys having superior mechanical

properties have been implemented on chassis, engine block and other suspension parts. However physical and mechanical tests of aluminum parts are still required to ensure the performance of using aluminum alloys on automotive parts. On the other hand, the use of ultra high performance steel range of versatile and advanced and ultra high-strength steels has been developed primarily to meet the needs of the automotive industry – increasing strength or reducing weight to achieve optimal performance parameters. Most of global steel makers and providers are focusing on further steel grade development known as UltraLight Steel Auto Body Project (ULSAB). The purpose of ULSAB project is to decrease part dimension, thickness of material and use high strength steel grade. Whereas, the ability of forming metal and process of high strength steel forming are also considered. More than 90% of the vehicle was composed of high-strength steel defined by the Auto/Steel Partnership (A/SP) as steel with an incoming yield strength of 210 MPa (30 ksi) or greater. The ULSAB body showed dramatic results in safety and structural testing, exceeding project benchmarks in some cases by significant margins.

As a result, these high strength steel applications are leading to the material testing for automotive part properties. The automotive part material testing is then necessary to assure the formed automotive part qualifications and standards.

The main objective of automotive parts testing is to understand the durability of those parts from cyclic applied load and deterioration from environment; including metal corrosion and decrepitude of polymer.

Automotive Material Durability Tests

Tensile test is a common mechanical testing method for automotive materials. Metals and polymer are usually tested to determine the yield stress value (the maximum applied load) at room temperature. However some parts are tested to know a magnitude of fatigue strength to describe a property of materials: the amplitude of cyclic stress that can be applied to the material without causing fatigue failure. However temperature and humidity also affect the durability of materials; especially, plastic, rubber and polymer are required to test in a specific chamber with controlled humidity and temperature.

Why It Needs the Work Piece for Testing

It is realized that material testing is able to indicate the durability of material and environment resistance. Automotive part specification can be found by an actual testing while the calculation of part shape factor is performed as a function of stress value by a simple method called Finite Element Method (FEM). However, FEM results need to be proved by the actual test. Therefore the actual automotive part testing is mandatory to the further development of automotive parts. Testing for mechanical property and durability of automotive parts

Durability of automotive part is a key for longer service lifetime. Normally, most of all automotive parts have to assist the

repeating load from the vehicle utilization; the testing for durability called as fatigue testing which composed of several testing factors as calculating repeated load, a set of jig and fixture, a proper fatigue test equipment and a testing standard is applied. At higher temperature, thermal fatigue test using a heating furnace to elevate the testing temperature can be also applied to analyze the fatigue strength variation. Moreover impact and drop weight tests are alternative methods to obtain the impact absorb energy for material damage.

The Significance of Automotive Part Testing for Product Development

Automotive part testing is not only to indicate the ability of the tested part but also to improve the material selection and design to develop the part materials. Automotive material testing is now developing in term of engineering design and simulated testing atmosphere, testing equipment technology and skilled tester. One of most important factor is an ambient testing control. Testing within controlled chamber has been widely used. It is able to control temperature and humidity leading to the testing result accuracy. In term of engine, all engine parts made of various metal alloys are inspected for material durability. Ferrous and non-ferrous materials are encouraged to test in the same condition to determine their service lifetime and safety factor.

At present, car and part making technology has been extensively developed through automotive supply chain since the demand of high performance materials is also increasing. Hence, auto-motive parts are needed to improve and develop to enhance the superior automotive part quality. Automotive test results is used to convey the necessary data for automotive part design and process improvements However, only individual automotive part testing results are not enough, the component or assembly part testing is essential to be done.
