SunSwop, Your One-Stop Holiday Shop

Welcome to your SunSwop Directory for 2021. We wish you and your families a year of fun-filled holidays, whether that be using your owned timeshare week, or using a spacebank credit from a previous year. 2020 was a year like no other we’ve ever experienced, and the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic upon the world was immense, with the effects thereof to be felt for years to come. Our thoughts go out to all of our owners dealing with the impact which the Pandemic may have had on their lives and the lives of their loved ones. The National lockdown of 2020 had an enormous impact on our owners’ ability to use their timeshare weeks, as well as on SunSwop members being able to use their spacebanked points, which were due to expire at the end of 2020. We took proactive steps to try to ensure that the impact to our timeshare owners during this period was minimised as much as possible. All owners who were unable to occupy their weeks due to the resorts being closed during this lockdown period (26 March until 20 August) had their weeks banked with SunSwop for use at a future date. We also took the unprecedented step of extending points which would have

expired at the end of both 2020 and 2021, by an additional 2 years. In addition to this, all banked weeks with 2020 occupation dates have had the lifespan of their spacebanked points extended by an additional 2 years. Last year we mentioned that a number of refurbishment projects were to be undertaken at our resorts during the course of 2020. These projects had been planned well in advance and we were able to fast-track a lot of the work during the lockdown period, which meant that some of these projects were completed well ahead of their original completion dates, thereby limiting the impact and disturbance on our guests’ experience. We are very pleased to announce that we have added La Lucia Sands as a SunSwop Affiliated Resort. This is the first affiliation to SunSwop of a resort which is not managed by Southern Sun Resorts. We will be looking to increase these select affiliations of resorts around South Africa over the next few years, as these resorts offer owners of timeshare weeks in Southern Sun Resorts additional high quality accommodation in high demand areas, and afford the timeshare owners within these affiliated resorts exchanges into Southern Sun Resorts.

TIMESHARE

What do I own?

You own shares in a Shareblock Company

which leases or owns a resort property and

these shares give you the right to occupy a

specific unit and week each year, as well as

access to all of the amenities and facilities

at that specific resort property.

What do I need to know about levies?

• The annual levy ensures that your leisure

investment is protected, maintained and up-

graded. Levies are spent on the same day-to-

day maintenance and improvement projects

that one would undertake to protect the val-

ue of one’s own home. Most resorts also

build up a non-profit reserve of cash, to en-

sure that the property and its amenities and

facilities are maintained and upgraded to the

standards expected by timeshare owners.

• Levies are calculated annually by the

Resort Management Company and a

budget is presented to the Directors of

each respective Shareblock Company, for

approval. Shareblock Directors are elected

at Annual General Meetings and represent

the interests of all timeshare owners. Any

Shareholder is eligible for nomination

and election to the Shareblock Board of

Directors, and all Shareholders are welcome

who have placed the same week in the pool.

The resort charges an administration fee to

do this. Should you wish to make use of the

rental pool, you would need to notify the Re-

sorts Central Administration office in writing

at least 90 days before the start date of the

week which you own, together with the proof

of the levy payment. (Rental pool is the least

used option amongst owners wishing not to

use their timeshare week in a given year).

• You can give your week to family or

friends to use (referred to as a “Private Ar-

rangement”). It is important to notify the

Resort’s administration of the name and

contact details of the person who will be

occupying the unit, prior to occupation.

• You can give your week to our Resort

agents who will endeavour to rent this for

you. In this case (different to the rental pool

option), you will receive the full proceeds of

the rental, save for a commission which is

payable to the Resort’s agent.

What do I do if I wish to sell my time-

share week?

• Speak to our experienced sales agents

who will best advise you on market condi-

tions, pricing etc.

a copy of which is sent to every owner.

What can I do with my timeshare if I

do not wish to visit the resort at which I

own, in any particular year?

• You can deposit your week with SunSwop

(Southern Sun’s timeshare exchange compa-

ny) for the purpose of exchanging to another

resort within the Southern Sun Resorts port-

folio, or you can exchange internationally

through RCI®.

• You can place your week in the Resort’s

rental pool. The resort will then endeavour to

rent out your week and the proceeds of the

rental will then be shared between owners

The “wheelchair accessible” symbol is shown for resorts that have at least one unit with the following attributes: access via an elevator or ramp; wheelchair-wide entryways for unit, bathroom and bedroom; and handrails in the shower or bathtub.

The small number in the upper left shows the number of guests a unit can

accommodate privately, allowing for two people per separate sleeping area with private

access to a bathroom.

The small number in the upper right shows the maximum number of people

permitted to occupy the unit. For example, the symbol shown here means that the

resort offers two-bedroom units that can accommodate four people privately, but can

sleep six people in total.

The large number or letter in the center of the symbol indicates the number of bedrooms.

How do I deposit my week with SunSwop?

Simply contact the SunSwop call centre and

ask them to deposit your week. Remember

that your levy will become payable when you

deposit the week if its commencement date is

more than 90 days away.

Am I able to deposit only a portion of my

week at my home resort (e.g. a weekend or

midweek) with SunSwop if I wish to occupy

the other portion?

Since 2012 you have had the option to de-

posit only the portion of the week that you will

not be occupying. For example, if you wish to

occupy the weekend portion of your week at,

say, Drakensberg Sun, you would be able to de-

posit the remaining midweek portion with

SunSwop and receive the relevant trading

points for this midweek. This needs to be de-

posited in advance to receive applicable points

according to the SunSwop Trading Points table

in this directory. Note that weeks are split into

weekends and midweeks according to what re-

sorts allow. Thus, Fri check-in resorts have a

three-night weekend (Fri, Sat and Sun) and a

four-night midweek (Mon, Tues, Wed and

Frequently asked questionsThurs). Sat check-in resorts have a two-night

weekend (Sat and Sun) and a five-night mid-

week (Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs and Fri). Peak

weeks cannot be split, and need to be deposited

in their entirety.

What is the lifespan of my deposited weeks?

36 months from the date of deposit.

Can I cancel the deposit of my week?

No, you can’t. By depositing your week with

SunSwop you have relinquished the right to

occupy it, and that week may be assigned to

another member prior to the submission or

fulfilment of an exchange request made by you.

Up until how long before the check-in

day can I deposit my week?

You can deposit your week with SunSwop up

until two months (60 days) prior to occupation

without incurring any penalty. Should you de-

posit your week within 60 days of occupancy,

you will lose a percentage of your SunSwop

trading points.

Will I receive extra points for banking

my week early?

Yes. All weeks deposited up to 120 days

prior to the start date of that week will receive

10% extra trading points against that de-

posited week.

Points percentages received for depositing are

as follows:

• Up to 120 days prior to occupation: 110%

• 119 - 60 days prior to occupation: 100%



• 19 days or less: 0%

What are SunSwop Trading Points?

SunSwop Trading Points are the currency

you receive when depositing your week with

SunSwop. The number of points you get is

based on various factors – for example, the

resort at which you own, the size of your unit,

the unit’s amenities, the season in which you

own, the facilities offered at your home resort,

and so on.

How do I go about requesting a

domestic exchange?

Once you have deposited your week with

SunSwop, we recommend that you select a

minimum of three resort destinations, as well

as three different dates, to increase the likeli-

hood of securing your accommodation request.

We also recommend that you request your ex-

change holiday as far in advance as possible to

ensure that we are able to secure the accom-

Can I buy extra points if I don’t have

enough points to complete an exchange?

No. You would need to deposit an additional

week to ensure that you have sufficient points

If you need to cancel your confirmed ex-

change, you will unfortunately forfeit the ex-

change fee paid, and will be required to pay

another exchange fee when you next do an ex-

change. However, depending on when you can-

cel the confirmed exchange, you will be entitled

to a refund of the SunSwop trading points that

were used for the exchange.

Can I give my confirmed reservation to

a friend or family member?

Yes, you can. Simply request a Guest

Certificate from SunSwop (R62 per Guest

Certificate) in the name of the relevant person.

It is important that the arriving guest matches

the name on the resort’s reservation system.

The resort reserves the right to turn guests

away if the name on the confirmation letter or

guest certificate does not match the name on

the reservation system.

When do I pay the exchange fee for my

The number of points refunded would be

determined as follows:

• for exchanges cancelled up to 60 days prior

to check-in date: 100%

• 59 – 40 days prior to check-in date: 80%

• 39 – 20 days prior to check-in date: 60%

• 19 – 0 days before check-in date: 0%


TRADING POINTS GUIDE

TRADING POINTS GUIDE

To use your trading points you need to know the value of the week that you own. To find this, you would need to go to the relevant page in this directory which reflects the calendar and points value for the geographical region in which your resort is located. It is important that you know the week number and the size of the unit which you own.

If, for example, you own a week at uMhlanga Sands, you would refer to the page which shows the values for the KZN North Coast region.

Now refer to the calendar which shows the week numbers to determine the colour of the week owned for the particular year in which you wish to deposit your week, e.g. week 30 = Red for 2012.

Take a look at the points table which shows your resort and look specifically for the full week value of a red week in the unit size which you own, e.g. if you own a 2 bedroom unit, the value of the week would be 6450 points.

To determine the value of the week into which you wish to exchange, you would use the same method, e.g.:• select the region in which the resort is situated• select the resort into which you wish to exchange• check the colour of the week into which you wish to exchange by using the regional calendar• select the unit size required E.g. if you wished to exchange into a 0/04 unit in week 20 (white week) at uMhlanga Sands, the value required for this exchange would be 3575 points.

** PLEASE NOTE that some units cannot accommodate six adults. The unit might have sleeper couches that can only fit children 12 years and younger. Kindly confirm this with your call centre agent.
