Charity presidentis Carol Sanders

Carol Sanders of Nashville, who together withher husband Tom was named a co-Honorary Mem-ber for 1997, has been elected president of the ACBLCharity Foundation. She has been a Charity Founda-tion trustee for eight years and has served as vicepresident for the past five.

Sanders wants all bridge players to know howmuch they have done for charity over the years. “Mostof our members know that we make large donationsto our Charity of the Year. As a matter of fact, wedonate $100,000 each year to these charities, whichalways are chosen for a two-year term.

“But your Charity Foundation does much more thanthat -- it makes all kinds of minor grants. Altogether thefoundation gives away about $50,000 in minor grants.”

Lots is being done for charity by bridge players, but even more can be done, according to Sanders. “Iwant to open a door so our players can know whatthey can do locally. Every club has to run one charitygame a year for the Charity of the Year. But everyclub can also run a second charity game, with 100%of the proceeds going to the local charity they choose.

“Good things are happening with the Charity Foun-dation, and I want to keep all members abreast ofwhat’s going on. We’re making lots of progress.”

A big help -- here'show it's spelled

Tournament Director Karen Cooper was shak-ing her head Tuesday after an encounter with a gentle-man whose mind apparently was more focused onendplays and squeezes than real life.

Cooper, selling entries to the Blue Ribbon Pairs, asked one fellow for his name so she could write itdown. What she heard when he answered was “Bob”and an undistinguishable -- and certainly unspellable -- last name.

“How do you spell that?” Cooper inquired.Said the gentleman, in all seriousness, “B-O-B” -

- followed by the same unfathomable and unspelledlast name.

Carol Sanders

Ron von der Porten visitRon von der Porten, a former star in top-flight

ACBL and world competition who has dropped outof competitive bridge for the most part, dropped bythe Daily Bulletin office yesterday.

Ron has been living in England for the past twoand a half years. Ron is retired, but his wife has amajor job in England. He plays some rubber bridgebut almost no tournament bridge.

He did play tournament bridge once recently. BobHamman went over to England to play in the Brightonteam tournament in which 291 teams participated. Heasked Ron to play as his partner, and they finishedthird in this strong international event. It’s not as ifRon and Bob were new partners -- they once wonthe Blue Ribbon Pairs together.

Ron still does quite a bit of cruise bridge work --he’s been involved in that sort of activity for morethan 30 years. “It’s a different world on a ship,” hesaid. “But the players enjoy spending their on-boardtime doing something they like. It isn’t like tourna-ment bridge at all.”

Ron also has long been an expert commentator. He was the chief commentator at the Macallan tour-nament in London last year. The Macallan is one ofthe top pair tournaments on the world calendar.

Ron is a strong holdout against five-card majorsystems. “Players can learn the basics of such sys-tems, but they get all tangled up in their ideas whenthey try to get beyond the basics. A good four-cardmajor system is still the best -- that’s what I play. Youcan build on this naturally and easily, and you don’tneed all kinds of conventions and understandings. If Iever go back to writing -- I haven’t touched a type-writer in 12 years -- I think I’ll write a book on four-card majors. In my opinion, there isn’t a single goodbook on four-card majors on the market today.”

But how do you double?

On a crowded elevator, Chyah Burghardof Rochester MN was ruminating aboutthe Monday afternoon giveaway -- the

curvy yellow fruit that comes in bunches.“All day long,” said Burghard, “I wanted

to bid one banana.”One of the other passengers was Grant

Baze, one of ACBL's top bridgepros. “That,” he said, “wouldhave been better than some ofthe bids I made.”

DC. He is close to earning a law degree.Cooper made a name for herself when she was

promoted to regional rank as a TD in 1990, the young-est person ever to achieve that rank -- a record thathasn’t been beaten.

Besides developing as a TD -- she was workingthe Blue Ribbon Pairs Tuesday -- Cooper has be-come one of the ACBL’s experts in working the com-puter for Pendergraph (vugraph) shows. In fact, sheis about to earn a bachelor of science degree in com-puter science from York University in Toronto.

She hopes to teach math and computer scienceat the middle-school level in Toronto.

Cooper said she will miss all the friends she hasmade in the tournament world. “It’s been a great job,”she said, “and maybe one day I’ll come back to it.”

For now, Cooper is looking forward to setting uphousekeeping and planning a family with Levy, whowill move to Toronto after they marry.

She might even play a little more bridge, givingher a different perspective from the one she’s hadfor the past three years as a full-time director, work-ing 275 to 300 sessions a year.

“When the session’s over,” she said, “I’ll be ableto leave.” o

Runnersup in the Womens Board-a-Match Teams. From left, Jo Ann Sprung, JoAnna Stansby, Sue Picus and Joann Glasson.

Fine card readingBy Barry Rigal

Joanna Stansby produced an excellent piece ofcard reading in the Women’s Board-a-Match final.Fortunately for her it was in an event where an extraovertrick translated into a valuable result -- half a boardas it happened.

Board 21 « 8 2Dlr: North ª J 5 3Vul: N-S © K J 9 6

¨ K 10 9 3« A 7 5 4 « J 3ª A 4 ª K Q 10 7 6 2© A Q 8 © 10¨ A Q J 4 ¨ 8 7 6 5

« K Q 10 9 6ª 9 8© 7 5 4 3 2¨ 2

Joanna reached 4ª on the lead of the ̈2 to thequeen and king. North shifted to the «8, covered allaround, and Stansby drew trumps, pitching a spadefrom dummy. Then he cashed a second top club tolearn the bad news. Now a second spade was wonby South who exited passively with a third spade -- yes, a diamond would have been better. NowStansby ruffed and played one more trump to reachthis ending:

« --ª --© K J 9¨ 10 9

« -- « --ª -- ª 6 2© A Q 8 © 10¨ A 4 ¨ 8 7

« 10 6ª --© 7 5 4¨ --

At this point I think Stansby did very well toplay her opponents for having failed to find the dia-mond shift with the ©K wrong. When she cashedthe next-to-last trump she executed a trumpsqueeze. North was forced to come down to twodiamonds. Stansby could cash the ©A, ruff a dia-mond and leave dummy high.

How low can you go?By Barry Rigal

Alex Ornstein was faced with a tough declarerplay problem in the Swiss Teams on Sunday. Hereached 5© as West and this was what he had towork with:

« A 9 7 4 2 « 5ª A ª J 4© Q 10 8 5 3 2 © A 7 6¨ Q ¨ A K J 10 9 5 25© seems to be the best of the games -- other

than 3NT of course! 6© would be fine, although aclub lead might be a bit awkward.

How do you play 5© on the lead of a heart?Ornstein worked out the best play. He led a small

trump, intending to play dummy’s 6. When this loses, you win the return, lay down the ©A and run clubs, conceding a second trump if necessary.

So Ornstein played the ©2 and put in the 6 -- andSouth discarded a heart!! Now Ornstein played threetop clubs, throwing two spades. North ruffed andplayed a second heart, but Ornstein ruffed, trumpeda spade, cashed the ©A and led another top club, sluff-ing his low spade. He lost just two trumps.

Quiet captainBobby Baldwin of Las Vegas, captain of the win-

ning squad in the Open Board-a-Match Teams, shunspublicity and doesn’t like to talk about himself. Onthe other hand, his partner, Bobby Levin, couldn’t sayenough about Baldwin’s development as a player overthe past 18 months.

Baldwin, president of the Mirage Hotel in LasVegas, was an average player who wanted to im-prove, so he enlisted Levin’s aid. Because Baldwinhas so little free time, going to tournaments is impos-sible. So he and Levin have been playing 15 to 20days a month on OKbridge on the Internet.

“He’s now a tremendous player,” said Levin ofthe former winner of the World Series of Poker. “Onhis good days he plays as well as any top expert.”

Baldwin handled the cards well on this deal fromthe first final session of the Open BAM.

Baldwin liked his 19 high-card points so well thathe upgraded the hand for his 2NT opener, which nor-mally shows 20-21 HCP.

West led a low heart to the 5, 8 and A, and Baldwinplayed the «A and a spade to dummy’s queen.

Next, Baldwin played the ©10, inserting his queenwhen East played low. West won the ©K and stopped toconsider the information he had to that point.

West knew South had seven points in spades butonly four in hearts.

With the ªQ, Baldwin probably would havecashed that card. West could also place South withthe ©A Q, which added up to only 17 HCP. Westtherefore concluded that South had to have the ¨Kto be able to open 2NT. Deciding against cashing the¨A, West exited with the ªJ to dummy’s king.

Baldwin took full advantage of the chance for anovertrick. He ruffed a heart, cashed the ©A and playedthe ©9, letting it ride and pitching a club from dummywhen West played low. Even if West had coveredwith the ©J, Baldwin’s ©7 would have been good be-cause the ©8 in East’s hand was blotted out.

At one table, Levin and Weichsel reached 3NTon the East-West cards. That contract failed by atrick. Although they didn’t know it, at the other tableZia (South) and Rosenberg (North) had to find a wayto defeat one notrump by East.

Zia led a low diamond to the 5, 10 and jack. Attrick two, declarer led the ª6 from his hand to Zia’sjack and dummy’s king. Rosenberg smoothly followedwith the 3! Declarer then played a low heart fromdummy, on which Rosenberg played the 9. Declarer, completely taken in, ducked. As Rosenberg was cash-ing his hearts, Zia completed an echo in clubs, hopingto convince declarer that he held the king.

Zia, of course, was also having trouble makingdiscards, so he ended up having to throw one of hisdiamond winners, but the defenders still ended up withfour heart tricks, two diamonds and a spade for plus100 and an unlikely push.

was a lot like whist -- and he knew whist. The mostyou can score on a hand of whist is seven, so heknew the game wouldn’t be costly.

Three and a half hours after he started playing,he wrote a check for $436. “That was 25 years ago,”says Howard. “That money represented the mort-gage payment, the car payment, the utilities bill andsome of the month’s food.”

Howard still plays with the same three old friendsonce in a while, but nowadays Howard is always onthe plus side. And Howard considers that game inwhich he was a big loser a major turning point in hislife.

“It was a turning point for me,” he says. “Thereare more people that I care about in the bridge worldthan I thought possible. I have made some wonder-ful friends through bridge.”

He calls bridge the most wonderful game in theworld. “It’s a tremendous sport -- you can enjoy itwhen you’re nine and when you’re ninety. All youneed is a mind and a pleasant disposition to have thetime of your life.

“But there is one thing that we must do -- wemust set to rest the myth is an old person’s game. And it is a myth. Bridge is a totally vital game -- justask some of our Juniors.”

Low-key Barry Rigal builds high-profile reputationOf all the accomplishments in his bridge career,

Barry Rigal may be most proud of the accuracy ofhis predictions as a vugraph commentator in NorthAmerican and world championships.

On many occasions, other panelists havelaughed at his forecasts only to eat their wordsmoments later when Rigal’s predictions come topass before their eyes.

Consider this scene from the Bermuda Bowl inSantiago, Chile:

East, a Brazilian, is on lead against 5̈doubled. He leads the ªK, seeing a singleton heartin dummy.

East holds the ̈ A J doubleton, West the single-ton ¨K. Some of Rigal’s fellow panelists scoff whenhe predicts that East will shift to the ̈A, droppingpartner’s king. It happens.

The contract is still beatable as long as Eastdoesn’t play a spade away from his king, butRigal is right there with that prediction as well.Again, he is right. The absolutely impossiblecontract is made, and Rigal has guessed eachimprobable step.

Although vugraph commentary is pretty much ahigh-profile role, for the most part Rigal -- a trans-planted Brit-- goes about his job as a bridge journalistand player in a decidedly low-key fashion.

Even at that, his bridge career is steadily expand-ing and his reputation growing.

Now a staple on vugraph panels whenever he isavailable, Rigal is also a prolific writer for English-language bridge magazines -- including the ACBLBridge Bulletin -- a regular and important contribu-tor to the Daily Bulletins at NABCs, author of sev-eral books and an accomplished player.

That’s quite a resumé for someone virtually un-heard of in the U.S. until a couple of years ago.

Rigal, 38, lived all of his life in the center of Lon-don -- in the same house his grandmother moved intoafter her marriage in 1925 -- except for four years atOxford University.

Curiously, at Oxford he studied Latin and Greekfor the first two years, classical Hebrew for the sec-ond two. It’s curious because the profession he took

Barry Rigal

Rigal and his regular partner for seven years, PeterCzerniewski, won every event that mattered in GreatBritain at least once.

Rigal wrote his first magazine article in 1984. Hisbooks include Test Your Bridge Judgement and Step-by-Step: Deceptive Declarer Play. A sequel aboutdeceptive play by defenders is on its way, as is a bookhe has written with Bob Hamman. Rigal has alsohelped expand and update a reissue of a TerenceReese classic, The Expert Game.

After he qualified as a CPA in 1983, Rigal workedfor Price Waterhouse in London for four years be-fore joining Conoco, the American oil company, intheir tax department.

Such an occupation may sound dry, but Rigaltreated it as a kind of sport. As an accountant forConoco, Rigal was trying to make sure Conoco paidthe minimum in taxes, while his counterparts withthe government were trying to see that the com-pany paid the maximum. “It was very much a gameplayed between gentlemen,” he said. “I liked the chal-lenge of it.”

When Conoco decided to close the London of-fice and move it to Aberdeen -- “an inaccessible, cold, dank place in the northeast corner of Scotland” --Rigal decided it was time to move on.

A lover of theater, movies and fine restaurants,Rigal said, “I didn’t fancy moving to a place with onetheater and two cinemas.”

Rigal had met and formed a friendship with SuePicus in 1987 when she spent 18 months in Londonon assignment from her company. When Conocopulled the rug out from under him in 1994, Rigal movedto New York, where he shares an apartment withPicus. He spends a lot of his time there playing andteaching bridge and writing about the game.

Rigal has done well in high-level competition inthe U.S. His best finish so far was second in the NorthAmerican Swiss Teams at the 1994 Fall NABC inMinneapolis. His teammates were Jo Ann Sprung andDorothy and Alan Truscott.

Rigal’s first stint on a vugraph panel was in 1987,and he’s honed his skills ever since.

“My perception,” he said, “is that many vugraphcommentators find it difficult to divorce double-dummyanalysis from the single dummy that the players areseeing. I try to put myself in the position of the playerlooking at a single dummy.”

Rigal, of course, is a serious player, but not somuch so that he overlooks the main reason for play-ing. “I’m more interested in having a good time.”

up was as a CPA.By the time he left Oxford, Rigal had a lot of

bridge experience under his belt. Rigal learned thegame at age 12, just about the time he had made thedecision that he wasn’t going to realize his first com-petitive ambition -- that of being a world-class tabletennis player.

Luckily for him, Rigal fell in with a pretty goodgroup of bridge players, including Tim Cope, whoregularly represents South Africa in internationalcompetition.

Rigal discovered duplicate at age 16 and learnedto love that variation. “It’s rather intoxicating,” he said,“to find that you’re good at something.”

At Oxford, the bridge crowd was not as strong, but Rigal kept working to improve and, on his returnto London, found himself in good company again.

(Law 70C) that since declarer had not accounted forall the trumps, he might have played his last trump, the«6, which would lose to the «9. The defense would havethen taken (in addition to the three tricks already won atthis point) three additional heart tricks and two club tricks. The Director ruled that the result would be 4« downfive, plus 250 for E/W.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director ’s rul-ing. South stated that because he had thought trumpswere drawn, it was unreasonable to make him playhis last trump before he began to play diamonds. Ifthat line of play was allowed, West would ruff thefourth round of diamonds, and South would then beable to win two high spades, two ruffs, and three dia-mond tricks for down three. E/W stated that had playcontinued, when East did not follow suit on the thirdround of trump, South might have played anotherround.

The Committee Decision: Law 70C states:“When a trump remains in one of the opponents’ hand, the Director shall award a trick or tricks . . . thatcould be lost to that trump by any normal play” Also, the Laws state ‘normal’ includes play that would becareless or inferior for the class of player involved, but not irrational”. In order to decide how many tricksto award the defense the Committee had to decide ifit was “irrational”, or merely “careless” for South toplay a fourth round of trump. Two Committee mem-

bers believed that since West had clearlymiscounted trumps, as well as his tricks, there was a chance he would carelesslyplay a fourth round of trumps. Three Com-mittee members believed that when de-clarer played the «K and West followedwith the «7, it would be irrational for Southto then play the «6. Therefore, in a three-two split decision, the Committee changedthe result to 4« down three, plus 150 forE/W.

WEST NORTH EAST SOUTHPass Pass

1« 2© Pass PassDbl Pass 2« Pass (1)Pass 3© All Pass(1) Break in tempo.The Facts: 3© made three, plus 110 for N/S.

There was an agreed break in tempo by South afterEast’s 2« bid. The Director ruled (Law 16A) that therewas unauthorized information present and that passby North was a logical alternative to 3©. The Direc-tor changed the contract to 2« made two, plus 110 forE/W.

The Appeal: N/S appealed theDirector’s ruling. Both sides agreed therehad been a break in tempo. North did notbelieve that pass was a logical alternativewith a six-loser hand, not vulnerable, atmatchpoints. N/S were playing their firstsession together and had a combined totalof approximately 300 masterpoints.

The Committee Decision: The Com-mittee decided that even though there wasa break in tempo, it was likely from theauction that the South hand would haveone or more useful cards. The Committeemembers did not believe that defending 2«was a decision that would be considered by N/S’speers. The Committee restored the table result of 3©made three, plus 110 for N/S. The importance of bid-ding in a relatively even tempo was explained to N/S.They were made aware that a player’s breaks intempo usually transmit unauthorized information whichmight strictly limit the acceptable options available tohis partner.

At this point, the Director instructed that the auc-tion continue and left the table. Before the openinglead was made, South explained that systemically the3¨ bid showed either a diamond bust or a game-forc-ing hand with a six-card or longer suit. At this pointEast called the Director. When the Director arrived, there was a great deal of commotion at the table.

The Director did not take East away from thetable to ask if he wanted to change his last call basedon the information that South had provided. East stated, however, that he wished to reserve his rights. TheDirector instructed that play continue. After play wascompleted, the Director was called again by East whostated that had he known the meaning of all of thebids before his final pass, he would have doubled thefinal contract. The Director ruled that the table resultwould stand.

The Appeal: E/W appealed the Director’s rul-ing. East stated that if he had the correct informationabout the auction, he would have doubled the finalcontract. South had been playing his complicated sys-tem for about four years. He stated that he had beenteaching his wife (North) the system over the lasttwo years and that there had not been too many part-nership misunderstandings. The Committee examinedthe N/S convention cards and found that this specificauction (2̈ - Pass - 3̈ ) was listed and described.

The Committee Decision: The Committee hadto deal with a unique situation in that the Director hadnot taken East aside to determine if he would havechanged his final call had correct explanations beengiven. The Committee decided, after listening to Eastand considering that he had doubled 3© and had indi-cated that he wished to reserve his rights, that it waspossible that he would have doubled the final con-tract. The Committee also decided that it was pos-sible that East had enough information about the handto double in any case if he wanted to do so. WEST NORTH EAST SOUTH3NT (1) Pass 6«

All Pass(1) Gambling, not Alerted. The Facts: The opening lead was the ªA, after

which 6« made seven, plus 1010 for N/S. After theplay was completed, West called the Director becausehe was not sure whether the 3NT bid was Alertable. He stated that if it was Alertable, and if it had beenAlerted, he might have chosen adifferent opening lead (a trump). The Director ruled that the resultwould stand since E/W had not beendamaged (Law 40C) by the failureto Alert.

The Appeal: E/W appealedthe Director’s ruling. West statedthat he expected the dummy to bea strong balanced hand and hethought that the failure to Alert de-nied him the opportunity to considerother opening leads. He stated thathe had led the ªA in order to determine the best shiftafter he saw the dummy. West also stated that hehad tried to unobtrusively examine the N/S conven-tion cards, but since they were not in a position thatcould be easily seen, he was unable to do so.

The Committee examined the N/S conventioncards and found that Gambling 3NT was clearlymarked. When asked why 3NT was not Alerted,South stated that she did not realize the bid wasAlertable, and that this was the first time the bid hadbeen made in their partnership. When asked if hewondered why there had not been any sort of trans-fer auction, West stated that he really didn’t thinkabout it -- he just assumed that 3NT was strong andbalanced.

The Committee Decision: The Committeeagreed that there had been a failure to Alert. TheCommittee explained to the players that since the fail-ure to Alert was misinformation, Law 47E2 allowedthe player to “retract the card he . . . played after amistaken explanation of an opponent’s conventionalcall . . .” which is what the Director would have com-municated to the players had he been (Law 9B1a) “.. . summoned at once when attention . . . drawn to anirregularity.” The Committee determined that due tothis negligence the damage was not a consequenceof the infraction (Law 40C) and allowed the tableresult, 6« made seven, plus 1010 for N/S to stand. The Committee also explained that an opening 3NTbid was sufficiently rare that the player had an obli-gation to determine the meaning of the call if he con-sidered that information necessary to make an in-formed decision.

The Committee also decided that since thefailure to Alert was an infraction, and since there wasno damage to the non-offenders, N/S would be as-sessed a one-half IMP procedural penalty that would

accrue to E/W for contributing to the disruption thatensued.

the misinformation and allowed the re-sult to stand.

The Appeal: E/W appealed theDirector ’s ruling. East stated he predi-cated his redouble on the likelihood ofan E/W major suit fit.

The Committee Decision: TheCommittee decided that East’s judgmentin redoubling was less than ironclad inthat E/W might well find themselves play-ing in a 6-0 club fit at the three-level andthat opposite partner’s presumed dia-mond shortness, a 4-3 spade fit might not

stand up well to repeated trump leads. Furthermore, the Committee was not sure E/W had been damaged, inasmuch as 2© doubled might well fail by two tricks.

North was instructed not to give the opponentsthe benefit of his bridge judgment when asked abouthis partnership’s agreements. (He had stated whenasked that this partnership did not have the agree-ment that the double showed five trumps.)

N/S. 3« was Alerted as a good preempt in spades;3© would be a weak preemptin spades. E/W asked Northto provide them with an ex-ample of a good preempt andwere told that AKxxxxxwould be an acceptable suit. After South’s hand was dis-closed, the Director wassummoned. East alleged thathad he known that South might hold a six-card suit,he would have doubled 4«. The Director ruled thatthe result would stand.

The Appeal: E/W appealed the Director’s rul-ing. They stated that they should have been told thatthe bid might be based on a “shaped” hand and mightnot be a seven-card suit. East stated that had he beenapprised of the possibility that South held a six-cardsuit, he would have chosen to double 4«. If Southheld seven spades, East believed that West might beable to isolate South in the play.

The Committee Decision: The Committeedeemed North’s answer to East’s question (regard-ing the nature of 3«) to be sufficient; AKxxxxx wasboth close to the prototype (by agreement) and defi-nitely a valid example. Although E/W contended thatNorth should have said something about six-card suits, the hand that South held (third seat, not vulnerable)was so much better than a “bad” 3« preempt (via 3©)that E/W should have realized its appropriateness andwithdrawn their appeal.

Furthermore, the E/W case was the sort of stretchof imagination that a Committee would always re-gard as self-serving and E/W were both very experi-enced players. East had a very good hand on the auc-tion and were perhaps as likely to be missing a slamas going down in 4NT. Had East or West wished toknow about the possibility of a six-card suit, it wasopen to both of them to ask a specific question to thateffect.

The Committee members considered the E/Wcase to be without merit and decided to retain E/W’sdeposit. Furthermore, the Committee deemed E/W’sappeal to be abusive of the appeals process and ac-cordingly assessed them a penalty of one-quarter ofa board.

plus 100 for N/S.The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director ’s rul-

ing. The break in tempo was admitted to be 25-40seconds. South stated that the only time a diamondcontract could be doubled for penalty would be im-mediately after the 2© bid. They play penaltydoubles at the two-level and takeout doubles at thethree-level. He stated that the break in tempo wasbecause he was considering bidding 3ª but wasconcerned that his partner might think he had fivehearts.

The Committee Decision: The Committeedecided that the explanation of the double of 3© wasa self-serving statement. The admitted 25-40 secondhesitation seemed uncommonly long for a South who“knew” that double was for takeout. Based on thisobservation, the Committee changed the contract to3© doubled down one, plus 100 for N/S. The combi-nation of the N/S explanation of the meaning of thedouble, the failure to Alert, and the long hesitationwas sufficiently contradictoryto convince the Committee toretain the deposit because theappeal did not have substantialmerit.

The East player, who ar-rived late, professed not toknow whether there was to bea Committee. He hotly deniedthat his partnership was noti-fied until the Director showedhim his partner’s signature inthe non-appellants box of theappeal form. In addition, hemade his statements between bites of food he hadbrought with him. The Committee considered a pro-cedural penalty for his conduct, but decided insteadto inform him of their concerns.

When Lou Reich played against the internationalplayer with his bevy of kibitzers, he wanted to givethem something to talk about.

opening lead was the ©2. Reich won the ace andplayed a heart to the king -- not an obvious line, butlook what happened!

Back came a second diamond, of course, and nowReich won the ©Q, played a heart to the jack andtook his club discard on the top diamond. A spade tothe king and ace allowed the defense to force de-clarer for the first time. Reich ruffed the club switch, ruffed a heart and then played the «J, smothering the10 and scoring up 10 tricks.

The offended internationalist could not stop him-self from saying, “Did you miss-sort your hand?”But look what happens if declarer rushes to takehis club discard. After the three top diamonds anda spade to the king and ace, the defense taps de-clarer once. They do so again when in with theªA, and now declarer can’t play any more trumps. He must lead winning hearts, and the defense willscore their «Q and «10. You make only plus 140instead of 170 with that line.
