Oliver Parker has made an impressive career out of directing stylish adaptations of the Oscar Wilde plays The Importance of Being Earnest and An Ideal Husband, and now he continues his work with the reading-list favourite, Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. In this drama, Ben Barnes stars as the title character, a handsome young Victorian gentleman who remains eternally young while a portrait of him grows old and bears the ugly scars of his vile undertakings.

Co-scripted by one of the writers of Madagascar and the Academy Award-winning ‘Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit’ is an adventure/comedy about kids on a family vacation who must fight off an attack by knee-high alien invaders with

world-destroying ambitions--while the youngsters’ parents remain clueless about the battle.

Over twenty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees from their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them.

It’s been a fantastic first year of trading for us so we would like to say a big thank you to all our loyal customers, corporate and private.

Every assignment we have catered for has been so different from the last it’s kept us on our toes! From a Persian themed banquet in an opulent Sotogrande mansion, private banks in Gibraltar to beautiful weddings, one as far as Lanjaron! But I think our favourite this year has to be the sumptuous 4 course anniversary dinner for two at a private villa in Gaucin with the sun setting. 6 Atlantic oysters, Mexican tuna carpaccio, Thai buttered lobster, and grappa pannacotta and poached summer fruits to follow.

Of course not all our events require such expensive ingredients as this, but we strive to deliver the highest quality food and service whatever the budget.

Many of our clients are getting together once a week forgetting the taxis, babysitters and high mark up on restaurant wine and calling in the professionals to cook and serve a fantastic meal in their own homes for groups of friends.

With over 30 years experience in the catering industry and having worked in some of the finest restaurants and hotels in Europe the team at Portobello offer a wealth of experience for any occasion. As we are a family business we understand that every event is unique. From Children’s parties to corporate buffets to private dining we enjoy working with our clients to ensure we get it right.

What better way to enjoy your home, yacht or garden than to treat yourself and guests to exciting, delicious food served in any number of different ways.

Whether cocktail reception or sizzling barbecue, our great Sunday service or a bespoke picnic hamper delivered to your door, our attention to detail is unsurpassed. Let our uniformed chefs prepare imaginative cuisine in your home and relax while our professional waiters attend to you and your guests.

Bon Appetite!

Driving tips from Don Neumáticos Nº 28

Speed humps

If you find you are approaching a speed hump a little too fast, applying the brakes to reduce your speed means the front / nose of the vehicle drops down, which reduces the ground clearance of the car. The tip is, just before the speed hump, release the brakes which bring the front / nose of the car back up to its normal ride height. The benefit is two fold, giving more ground clearance to clear the hump and the car’s suspension is not compressed so is able to ride the speed hump.

Cleaning Service

Diamond maids

For a time we have been offering a service that gives working women more free time by releasing them from the chores of cleaning and ironing. Ever heard the phrase ‘you’re a diamond’? We can be your diamond, now setting up a new office to cover the areas from Sabinillas to Alcaidesa including Sotogrande. We are so confident of our service that we offer a satisfaction guarantee.

The cleaning service is offered at a ONE standard fixed price, (commercial, renting, exchange hand over’s and estate agencies welcome).

The “X” FactorWhy is it that some restaurants are always

busy, whereas the adjoining restaurant is bereft of customers,

That’s the “X” factor.

Don Neumáticos is in its 9th year so we must be doing something right. Fair prices in these pressing times are important but our main difference is, when we say Tuesday we mean the day after Monday, therefore saving the customer any problems about getting their car back on the road as quickly as possible.

As agents for all the major tyre manufacturers we draw from their stock, which gives us unique access to thousands of tyres on the next day delivery service. Tyres ordered before 13.00 should be delivered am the following day.

Our 4 x 3 offer has been so successful that we now offer the same net price on one, two or three tyres which means a discount of 25% on all leading brands.

DFAS de la Frontera has an exciting programme for December to get us all in the festive spirit. On the 15th December we welcome lecturer Gijs van Hensbergen BA (Hons). He will tell us how Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) broke the bounds of architectural convention (as well as his clients’ budgets) to create decorative buildings which looked more like clay than bricks and mortar. More than 80 years after his death, work continues on his multi-spired ‘Sagrada Familia’ in Barcelona for which, typically, he left no plans. Although Gijs van Hensbergen is a new NADFAS speaker he is acknowledged in Spain as an expert on Gaudí. The lecture will be followed by a complimentary drinks reception and for those who wish to stay for lunch there will be a special menu del dia available at a reasonable price.

On the 8th December Members will have the opportunity to enjoy a sumptuous Christmas Hog Roast lunch at Cortijo La Vizcaronda in Manilva and on the lecture day, 15th December, there will be a Christmas Art and Crafts Show and Sale at San Roque where our talented artistic Members will

Christmas Culture Gaudí – Sinner or Saint?

Km. 127 (A7), on the third Tuesday of the month at 11.00.a.m. between October and May.

Gym Tonic

Pilates in ReformerThe Reformer, a back stabilizing and conditioning machine, designed by Joseph Pilates in 1920, is a sliding horizontal “bed” with loops and detachable springs. Since its popularity is on the rise, it has moved from the world of professional dance into Pilates Studios.Pilates believed that corrective exercise begins with education and total conditioning. “It’s simply not enough to focus on the injury; one must balance the entire body’s musculature.”The reformer does this by helping its users to control pelvic stabilization: the ability to maintain the pelvis in a neutral position. Individuals naturally lie in neutral position when situated properly on the reformer - with the back on the horizontal, movable carriage, shoulders well placed, and the legs resting comfortably with the feet placed on the foot bar. When exercising on the reformer, you don’t have to worry about keeping the body in one position or another – the reformer does it for you, using spring resistance that can be modified to support any physical type. That’s why it can be used for people with chronic back pains, sports professionals,

weekend athletes and everybody without pains or injuries willing to develop a strong, flexible body. Gym Tonic offers Reformer group classes for 4 people. Personal Training is also available to achieve special targets.

Also:Falun Dafa (Chi-Kung) free classes every Friday at 4:00 pm.

Sweet Festivities

In these festive times there are lots of sweet items around the house, so what better wine to enjoy with cakes and chocolates than a sweet Pedro Ximenez. Don PX is a variety of wines made by Toro Albala , a family run wine cellar created in 1844 in Aguilar about 50km from Cordoba and supported by Montilla Moriles.

This wine is made by an ancestral drying process. After losing the water, the grape juice gains density and a concentration of sugar thickens it up. Following a partial fermentation, alcohol is added until it reaches 17% vol., then it is left for a year in stainless steel barrels for it to rest and settle.

Tasting notes: an amber, greenish colour, with heavy legs and strong on the nose with scents of dried fruits, figs, apricots, dates and raisins. A sweet and full wine, with a warm sweetness, yet containing slight bitter flavours with light bonding qualities to make a good balance. This wine also has flavours of raisins, honey and dates.

Unas Fiestas Dulces

Marca: Don PXTipo: Generoso DulceBodega elaboradora: Bodegas Toro AlbaláOrigen: D.O. Montilla Moriles.Variedad: 100% Pedro Ximénez.Alcohol: 17 %Temperatura servicio: 14º C.Precio aproximado: 12.19 €

Sendero: RioHozgargantaThis walk follows the course of the Rio Hoz-garganta close to the

town of Jimena de la Frontera. We find ourselves by a large canal of water “el Cao” leading up to an old mill said to represent the

creation of natural energy and tradition. It was constructed towards the end of the18c, and was first used for melting down metal, known as the “Fabrica de Bombas” during the siege of Gibraltar. After that it was converted into a flourmill.

There are two starting points for this walk. The first begins at the “Cruz Blanca” from the northern entrance of Jimena de la Frontera and it follows the path down to the river. The second option is to start the walk at the “Fabrica de Bombas” in the southern area of the town, near to the “Pasada de Alcala”, above the river.

64

Robin / Petirrojo / Erithacus rubecula

Abundant resident in Woodland areas, in autumn and winter many migrants arrive from the North and they can be found practically throughout the whole area. Unmistakable rusty-red breast, brownish upperparts, rounded head and body, large black eyes and a high pitched call “tick, tick” juveniles are heavily spotted lacking red breast.

Bluethroat / Pechiazul / Luscinia svecica

Common winter visitor to coastal wetlands and La Janda, they have greyish-brown upperparts, white supercilium and rusty-red bases to tail feathers. In winter male’s are similar to females but with remains of blue on the breast, poorly defined black collar and black malar stripe. In summer the male’s plumage shows a blue throat the breast with a white or red central spot.

Rufous Bush Robin / Alzacola / Cercotrichas galactotes

Scarce visitor to wild olive groves, numbers are falling. Similar to a nightingale but with black and white spots at the end of its reddish tail that are more visible in flight, white supercilium and dark eye stripe, often spreads tail and jerks it upwards.

HIKING IN CASTELLAR :“LA CALZADA” NATURE TRAIL

Nature lovers have a good opportunity to enjoy hiking by exploring one of the

most beautiful routes within the Los Alcornocales Natural Park.: “ La Calzada”. This route is not only important for its natural value, but also for its historical value, since the hiker can walk not only through a natural environment but through historic remains such as the medieval road and the medieval fortress as well. You can also visit a natural water fountain,

“Fuente Vieja” which has been used by local people for many many years.

Length : 4.7 km.Time :2h. 30min. + 30min. to visit the castle.Difficulty:Medium

The trail has two main sections. The first takes us over a medieval cobbled highway, known locally as the “Roman Road”. It is a mountain road with hairpin bends that leaves “La Jarandilla” (located on the road to Castellar Castle) and leads to the walls.

The origins of the medieval road are unknown, but it is thought that it could have been an ancient Roman road that led to a settlement situated under the present day Moslem castle.

66

This stretch of the route is 1.3 km long, with a 12% gradient, and takes approximately 30 minutes. The scenery along the route is breathtaking.

Before starting the second part, a visit to the castle is compulsory. Built on top of an ancient Roman settlement, the origins of the castle proper date from the Tenth Century. Nevertheless, it was during the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries that the defensive fortress as we know it today was built. Some parts of the building have changed since then and from 1434 onwards some more sections were added during the Christian Era.

The second part begins right in front of the tourist information point and leads along another cobbled highway to a well called “Fuente Vieja”. Apart from providing a water supply for the people of Castellar until not long ago, “Fuente Vieja” has a significant value both historically and artistically. It is believed that the origin of this stretch of road coincided with the construction of the well, giving easier access to water-carriers and to the inhabitants of the citadel.

If the hiker is not tired and would like to continue his adventure, not very far from the starting point of the second part, there are some tombs which have been excavated in the rocks. Of course they are worth a visit.
