The internet has brought with it dangers for your child – but there are ways of protecting them.

It‟s a dark, winter night and your child is sitting chatting to a strange man three times her age. This is not an uncommon story when children are left to their own devices on the internet. You wouldn‟t let them fall prey to unsa-voury characters on the street, so why allow it to happen in your own home? More and more young people are using computers; they cost less and are constantly developing to become increasingly easy to use. In a recent study it was found that 98 per cent of five to 18-year-olds use a computer either at home, school or elsewhere every day. Computers have become a part of our everyday lives but they are not without their risks. Almost certainly the most efficient way to protect children when they use the internet is through the installation of filtering and blocking software, This functions throughout the entire web and not just search results and gives a respectable

amount of power to parents in deciding what is and isn‟t safe content. Additionally, safe filters are a simple way to keep children safe online; they are easily set up and will prevent the younger members of the family from seeing any inappropriate material on the web. Good anti-virus software such as Norton or AVG also offers safe filters. Google, handily offers „Safe Search‟ filtering with three settings (ranging from zero to strict filtering) allowing parents to control what kind of information children can find. Similar filters can be found on MSN, Yahoo and AOL – the latter allowing you to set up a parent and child account and download software to help you keep your child safe online for no charge. All these methods could be worthwhile, but small things like keeping your computer central so

it‟s easier to monitor their actions are also effective. Another issue with children and computer use is physical well being. Sitting at a computer for hours can harm a child‟s posture and lead to other problems. Encouraging children to have breaks from the computer to rehydrate and exercise or stretch their muscles is always useful. It is also wise to set a limit to the amount of time they are allocated to spend at the screen as children are easily caught up in the action of a computer game and soon enough it appears to be a much more favourable alternative to homework. It is also helpful to make sure they are not ever sitting too close to a computer screen as it can lead to eye strain. Teaching children these points about responsible communication will undoubtedly help to shape them as they gain their independence as young people finding their way in the world.

BRISTOL INTERNATIONAL BALLOON FIESTA TAKES TO

THE SKIES FOR 2014

Bristol will play host to Europe‟s largest ballooning event, an amazing spectacle and FREE event for the whole family from Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th August 2014. Over 120 hot air balloons will take off from Ashton Court Estate at dawn and dusk, and light up the skies at night with evening balloon glows. The event features four days of colourful hot-air balloon displays, with half a million visitors gathering in the gorgeous grounds of Ashton Court to watch balloons of all shapes and sizes lift off over the City of Bristol.

The event features four days of colourful hot air balloon Displays. A massive half a million visitors gathering in the gorgeous grounds of Ashton Court to watch balloons of all shapes and sizes lift off over the City of Bristol.

The whole weekend is full of aerial displays with special appearances planned, from helicopters and aircraft including the incredible RAF Typhoon Display team, flown by 29 (Reserve) Squadron from RAF Coningsby, showcasing the incredible performance of the aircraft. This stunning sight is not to be missed, nor the incredible noise that fills the arena. The event is a perfect family day out with attractions on the festival site including balloon tethering, model aircraft displays, experiential activities, and a music stage hosted by Jelli Records.

Late night visitors can take in the spectacle of the famous nightglow, a stunning sight with 30 teams lighting up their balloon in time to music as night falls at 9pm on Thursday 7 th and Saturday 9th August. As the balloons finish their performance, the skies light up over Ashton Court Estate to spectacular fireworks.

Direct Local have teamed up with local experts Bristol Balloons to offer you some great deals if you are planning booking a balloon ride during this years fiesta.

Many people visit the fiesta for the two night glows, but for those that have planned and booked ahead there is the lucky opportunity to fly in a balloon at this very special event.

Fulfilling the ambition of a lifetime, experiencing a bird's eye view while slowly drifting across the Bristol landscape enjoying the magnificent experience of hot air ballooning. The flight could be a unique birthday present, anniversary gift or special treat, to rise above it all!

At Bristol Balloons our aim is to give everyone a pleasant, enjoyable and safe flight in one of our four balloons that we have there. Ballooning is an adventure, a magic carpet ride, something not to be rushed.

The flight will last for about one hour, the whole outing usually takes between 3 and 4 hours. The 6am and 6pm ascents from the fiesta take ad-vantage of the stable air and light winds found at these times of the day. (Regretfully, we do not fly if it is raining or very windy).

Ballooning, like serendipity, is the art of making happy and unexpected discoveries by chance. Where we go is entirely dependent upon the wind. No two flights are the same. The average distance we travel is ten miles, affording you stunning views of the surrounding scenery. We also fly from Bath, Gloucester to Wells, Usk to Westonbirt.

Age is no barrier to enjoying this spectacular journey, our passengers ages range from nine to ninety! A balloon basket is a brilliant platform for photography, bring a camera or camcorder, plenty of memory and a spare battery! Chilled Champagne or orange juice is served with our compliments. Each passenger receives a commemorative flight certificate signed by the pilot. Please get in touch quickly as all our spaces at the 2014 fiesta sell very quickly, but it is never too early to start thinking of 2015 or that other special date in the year ahead. We look forward to taking you on a memorable experience.

According to thisismoney.co.uk, over one million drivers in the UK are driving around in damaged cars because of fears that their insurance premium will rise if they make a claim.

Car insurance premiums are at an all-time high with rises of around 30% over the last 3 years alone. Because of this drivers are doing everything they can to keep premiums to a minimum including increasing their excesses. This unfortunately means though, that if you are unlucky enough to have an accident, you may need to fork out a large sum of your own money to get it repaired, even though it is going through your insurance. Not only this, but your annual premium is also likely to increase as a result of making a claim.

ChipsAway, the UK‟s leading automotive paintwork repairers recommend getting minor accidental damage repaired using a service such as theirs, as it means there is normally no need to claim on your insurance and usually costs less than your excess. ChipsAway Chief Executive Tim Harris comments: “Minor damage can cost far less to repair through us than going through your insurance and so we would urge drivers to at least get an estimate before claiming, and hopefully we will be able to save them time and money! Our professionally trained specialists repair minor paintwork damage such as bumper scuffs, paintwork scratches and minor dents, and can undertake the repair in a location convenient for the customer. It makes good sense to give us a call and find out how much you could possibly save; before the damage ultimately gets worse the longer it is left.”

Over a million drivers scared to report an accident due to worries their

insurance premium will rise

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has recently announced the referral of the investigation into the car insurance market to the Competition Commission, following worries of malpractice due to the current structure, which are not only unfair on consumers but ultimately add unnecessary costs to drivers‟ policies.

Recent figures show accident repairs to be inflated by an average of £155, with replacement car hire an average of £560 more expensive than necessary. This is said to be adding £255m a year onto the cost of car insurance policies and in times where money is tight and insurance price rises seem like an all too frequent event, action really needs to be taken to prevent it happening any further. ChipsAway‟s Tim Harris is supportive of the comments made by Clive Maxwell, Chief Executive of the OFT, who says, “Competition appears not to be working effectively in the private motor insurance market.”

Tim comments, “We have known this has been going on for years and always thought it unfair that the insurer of the driver at-fault has little, if any, control over what they must pay in repair bills. The fact that many insurers are arranging artificially inflated repairs and car hire charges in return for a lucrative fee from their suppliers is completely unacceptable and something we are pleased is finally being made public and investigated.”

Tim concludes, “We have been campaigning for years to let consumers know they don‟t have to claim on their insurance for minor repairs such as bumper scuffs and kerbed alloys, which will not only mean forking out for their excess, but also an increase in their insurance premium as a result, and we hope this latest report will help make consumers more aware of the alternatives available.”

Bristol‟s slimmers are preparing to hold a 1, 2 and 3 mile Slimming World does Race for Life event to raise money for a leading cancer charity, and are calling for local volunteers to take part and join them. The members of the of our local Slimming World groups, will be holding their own event at 4pm on August 3rd at Redcatch Park, Broadwalk to raise money for Cancer Research UK, Slimming World‟s charity partner for 2014 through its fundraising arm SMILES: (Slimmers Making It a Little Easier for Some-one). The group is welcoming anyone in South Bristol to join in, whether it‟s taking part or spectating, and help them to raise as much money as possible for the charity. The local group‟s race is part of a national event running across all Slimming World groups between July 21st and August 3rd. The race is not competitive, and those taking part can choose the distance they‟d like to cover – 1km, 3km, 5km or more – and can run, walk, cycle or skate across the finish line, whatever form of activity they love to do. The aim of Slimming World does Race for Life is to raise money for charity while raising awareness about the benefits of getting active, including increasing energy levels, reducing stress, building self-esteem, improving health and helping to maintain a healthy weight. Having an active lifestyle also reduces the risk of developing a range of health conditions including some types of cancer. Sarah, who runs the Hengrove and Whitchurch Slimming World groups every week, says her members are really looking forward to the Slimming World does Race for Life event. She says: “We‟d love anyone in South Bristol to join us whether they‟re young, old, male or female and whatever their current fitness level. If anybody would like to join us, we will be meeting at Redcatch Park, Broadwalk at 4pm. Anyone who wants to take part can run, walk or even dance the distance – as long as they cross the finish line we don‟t mind! Hopefully the event will show people just how motivating being part of a group like ours can be.”

Local slimmer's put their best foot forward

for cancer charity, and they need you!

She continues: “Every penny raised will go to Cancer Research UK to fund pioneering, life-saving research of all cancers. One in three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and research has shown that many types of cancer are more common in people who are overweight. Cancer touches so many people‟s lives and at Slimming World we‟re determined to do anything we can to help people lead healthier lives in whatever way possible.” Sarah, who has lost 2st 7lbs, says: “I‟m walking 3 miles in memory of my Mum. It‟s a cause close to my heart. I used to really struggle with exercise, and found it really daunting taking those first steps to becoming more active. With Slimming World I learnt that the key is to start small and find some-thing that you enjoy, and I‟ve found that to be the best way to keep active and lose weight at the same time.” “There‟s no rule that says being active has to involve a gym or running shorts – walking to collect my children from school or hitting the dance floor on a night out is enough to compliment my weight loss beautifully. I definitely wouldn‟t have entered a distance race before I found Slimming World, but since losing weight I‟m feeling much healthier, happier and more confident – I can‟t wait for

Our aim is to provide an entertaining magazine that is a good read for local residents and also allows businesses to promote themselves cost

effectively within the local community.

Every month, we produce a glossy, easy on the eye magazine that gives local businesses an affordable, vibrant advertising alternative to

monochrome local newspapers.

This allows the affordability to advertise on a monthly basis and the opportunity to build a

significant local profile, which can only benefit their business.

As the popularity of tablets and mobile phones increases, the importance of an online presence

becomes even more vital.

Your business will also feature in the online magazine, which gets thousands of hits every month.
