MMA Kicks Off AcademicYear 2006-2007In Fine Form

MOM IS ALL SMILES !!! MMA Admissions Director LtCol Robert Grider, USMC (Ret) welcomes incomingCadet Garrett Paylor, a transfer from another military academy, and the Paylor family to Fall Registration.

Hailing from 29 different states and 8foreign countries, on Saturday August 12thMMAs 340-strong student body made theirway to Harlingen, Texas to begin anoutstanding year in their academic lives.Greeted at Peacher Hall Cadet ActivitiesCenter door by Battalion Staff Cadet LtColVincent Cervassi and Cadet Major AndrewDavis, incoming students and their familieswere turned over to Admissions Departmentfor in-processing. LtCol Grider, AdmissionsDirector, slapped a sticky nametag on eachcadets chest, while inquiring, Do you knowwhat four words are most important to youfrom this point on? Most common reactionsare a furtive HELP ME! glance towardsMom and Dad, followed by a shrug of theshoulders and a dunno, to which LtColGrider grins and gives the young man anencouraging smack on the back while replying,Yes, maam and Yes, SIR! For the most part, this draws a slight smile and sigh of relief fromthe young man as MMA Admissions OfficerJay Perez and Assistant Lupe Longoria begintackling the students paperwork.

Once checked in through Admissions and paidup at MMA Business Department tabledirectly behind Admissions, students and theirfamilies progress through THE GAUNTLET:Medical Dept. where any daily medicationsto be administered are bagged and tagged;Academics to pick up class schedules; Extra-Curricular offerings such as Boy Scouts andAerospace; Harold James Memorial Librarytable manned by MMA Librarian JudyKutzenberger; Harlingen Chamber ofCommerce table for parents interested in allthat thriving metropolis Harlingen has to offer;and FINALLY, nearly 180 degrees from wherethe journey first began, the MILITARY Dept.

table looms. Here the young man is directedto the table representing the company he hasbeen assigned to: ALPHA, CHARLIE,DELTA, ECHO, FOX or GOLF. DrillInstructors answer a range of questions fromparents and incoming students, then instructthe young man to give your Mom and Dad ahug, its time to go! In most cases the youngman will mutter so long and stare at the floor,to which the Drill Instructor will repeat, I saidHUG YOUR MOM! which generally getsimmediate results. With a smile and occasionalteary eye, Mom and Dad make their way tothe MMAPO (Marine Military AcademyParents Organization) table, enjoyrefreshments, and take in a Campus tour. For

the young man, his journey to excellence hasjust begun.

In-processing through Military, bags areemptied, casual clothes and personal amenitiesare tagged and sealed in boxes, standard MMAgear is issued and donned. On to MMA BarberJoe Handy for the MMA hair cut above therest, and then to assigned companies andCHOW in the Mess Hall. By the end of theday, most young men will have already learnedthat left always means left, and right can befound in the book of MMA knowledge entitledTHE RIGHT GUIDE. Academic year 2006-2007 is underway in a big way at MarineMilitary Academy. Stay tuned!

WELCOME BACK, CROCKER!!! Returning to MMA from a year gone by is Cadet Clay Crockerof Austin, TX. For the next year, Crocker will be hanging the HOME SWEET HOME banner ontheir bulkhead in GOLF Company. Were glad to have you back, Crocker...go hard and make itan AWESOME year!

The eighth grade Leatherneck VISA team began their volleyball season onThursday, 14 September at home against First Baptist Church of Brownsville. After initial briefing from officials, the Leathernecks won the coin toss andopening serve. Cadet De La Garza of Delta Company, Cadet Licardo ofCharlie Company, and Cadet Parrott from Fox Company teamed up toprovide 12 perfect sets to Cadet Hilliard of Golf Company who thenslammed the ball out of reach of the opposing players. Cadet Crum ofGolf Company rattled off 20 points from behind the service line beforeFirst Baptist was able to take control of the serve...truly a thing of beauty! The score of the first game was: MMA 25 First Baptist Church Brownsville6. OOH-RAH! In the second game, First Baptist Church began with theball on the serve. Although they jumped out ahead and enjoyed a brief lead,it was dominating pressure from the Leathernecks that provedinsurmountable. The score of the second game: MMA 25 First BaptistChurch Brownsville 12. OOH-RAH, OOH-RAH!!! Facing off on Tuesday,19 September, vs. St. Paul Lutheran, from opening serve until final volleyit would prove to be the toughest test of the year for VISA Leathernecks. The hard fought battle sent the score see-sawing back and forth. Thanks todominating plays at the net, the fighting Leathernecks came out on top:MMA 25-St. Paul Harlingen 23. Second game was much like the first--another well-played and hard-fought battle. In the end, VISA Leathernecksproved too much to handle and ended with a score of: MMA 25-St. PaulHarlingen 18. VISA Leathernecks are 2 and 0 on the season.

We know that all of you are looking forward to Parents Weekend that will beupon us in six weeks. During that time you will visit with your sons teachers, watch a winning football team as we play Tamaulipas, view a wonderful Saturdaymorning parade and attend the Anniversary Birthday Ball, but most importantly, spend quality time with your son.

From the moment that you arrive for Parents Weekend you will have theopportunity to bid on items that will be displayed for our annual silent auction. The purpose of this auction is to raise money for projects that will benefit all ofour cadets. The money raised will be used for the following new projects: Newmattresses are being purchased for the cadets and through the generosity of theParents Organization the majority of the cost for the mattresses has been funded. The remaining cost will be supplemented through the silent auction. We are alsoattempting to raise the remaining funds necessary to complete our new confidencecourse.

The goal for the silent auction is $75,000.00 to ensure that each of these newprojects are funded. The auction requires a tremendous amount of teamworkfrom all MMA staff and parents and we will work hand-in-hand with you toensure a successful outcome. Without your support the silent auction will not bea success.

We need your assistance! The silent auction is not a garage sale and we needdonated items that are tasteful and will attract a good price. In addition tomerchandise, we are asking parents to donate such items as time-shares, airlinetickets, fishing and guided hunting trips and sports tickets. We will then be ableto put certain donated items in a package that will make the auction item moreappealing.

We have included a sheet with this letter and ask that you return the sheet alongwith the item that you wish to contribute to the Development Department attn:Connie Flores no later than the 2nd of November. Please place a value on theitems that you are donating so we can mark each item appropriately. We are alsocontacting each company mom and asking that they work with their companiesto make this the most successful silent auction ever. If every family averagesspending $200.00 at the auction we will reach our goal of $75,000.00, all ofwhich will benefit our cadets.

Thank you in advance for your support and we look forward to seeing you forwhat we believe will be one of the most enjoyable weekends of the academicyear. Please donate items so we can reach our goal.

SHINE THOSE SHOES! CINCH THAT BELT! ADJUST COVERSATTENTION!!! As daybreaks aboard MMA Campus, Colonel Hill scrutinizes proper dress and appearance ofMMA Corps of Cadetsnot a mystery to ANY MMA Cadet, theres even a book called THERIGHT GUIDE to tell the cadet exactly how to pass Inspection with flying colors (Item 314.Personal Appearance & Uniform Regulations, Pages 32-38). Colonel Hill queries, Son,can you tell me the name of your Drill Instructor? Great, now tell me the name of theCommandant. The Cadet answers correctly, and his lips curl into a momentary flash ofa proud grin as Colonel Hill tugs at the cadets trouser belt loop and inquires, Have youlost a few pounds? You need to go see the Tailor Shop and get those trousers adjusted.Keep up the good work! and another GREAT day aboard Marine Military Academybegins. All companies passed INSPECTION in fine form. Marines never die; they just go to heaven and regroup. Semper Fi.

...Theres only one Naun Wally Juarez...small in stature but a giant in carrying outhis duties ensuring security on campus. A strict disciplinarian, Wally could almost sensewhat tricks cadets harbored in their heads. He knew where to look for monkey businessby cadets. Cadets had to be on guard for Wally because they knew thered be no trickswith him and hed show up where and when not expected. Cadets held him in high regard-with respect. Wally wore a number of hats at MMA beside security as Night DI:Quartermaster, coached Judo team, Weight Lifting, Physical Fitness Team, even Archery. He had a real positive, lasting impact on many cadets as they still recall fond memoriesof Wally decades old. A real American Marine who served God, family, country well -conscientious, dedicated. Wallys spirit is still with us. Semper Fi, Wally.

To Whom It May Concern:

I would first like to thank the Marine Military Academy for the honor of

partnering with FedEx Kinko’s in order to distribute their monthly newsletter to all of

their cherished donors. This partnership is well known within FedEx Kinko’s and we

hold an established pride in producing your newsletters.

We look forward to continuing this long, successful relationship which is why we

are taking the opportunity to notify you of a recent complication within our mail house.

We have discovered that many of the addresses printed on the outbound newsletters on

the most recent production of the newsletter contained more than one recipient in some

cases. We greatly apologize for any confusion with this issue and you can rest assured

that all of your friends at FedEx Kinko’s are working diligently to ensure this

complication will not be duplicated on future mailings.

Once again, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience as a result of our mail

services and thank you again for the opportunity to serve your organization. We strive

for world class quality and customer service and we look forward to a long lasting

partnership.

Sincerely,

Christopher Hamilton
