• ABOUT THE DIPLOMA IN COMPUTER SYSTEMS ENGINEERING:The diploma in computer systems engineering is primarily designed to provide adequate theoretical background with industry inclined hands-on experiences. Furthermore, this qualification aims to provide students with strong skills in programming, electronics, databases and process control.

This qualification has merged fields such as Embedded systems, Programming, Artificial Intelligence, Control systems, Intelligent systems, Machine learning, Automation, robotics, Communication systems, the Internet of Things and more to create a well-rounded, modern computer systems engineering student.

• CAMPUS WHERE OFFERED: Soshanguve South Campus.• ADMISSION REQUIREMENT(S) AND SELECTION CRITERIA:

FOR APPLICANTS WHO OBTAINED A SENIOR CERTIFICATE BEFORE 2008:Admission requirement(s):

A Senior Certificate with a matriculation endorsement or an equivalent qualification with a D symbol at Higher Grade or a C symbol at Standard Grade for English and a C symbol at Higher Grade or a B symbol at Standard Grade for Mathematics and Physical Science.

Recommended subject:

Information Technology.

Selection criteria:

Applicants must have an Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 26.

To be considered for the extended curriculum with foundation provision:

Applicants must have an Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 23.

FOR APPLICANTS WHO OBTAINED A NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE IN OR AFTER 2008:Admission requirement(s):

A National Senior Certificate with a bachelor’s degree or a diploma endorsement, or an equivalent qualification, with an achievement level of at least 4 for English (home language or first additional language), 5 for Mathematics or Technical Mathematics and 4 for Physical Sciences or Technical Sciences.

To be considered for the extended curriculum with foundation provision:

A National Senior Certificate with a bachelor’s degree or a diploma endorsement, or an equivalent qualification, with an achievement level of at least 3 for English (home language or first additional language) and 4 for Mathematics or Technical Mathematics and 3 for Physical Sciences or Technical Sciences.

Selection criteria:

To be considered for this qualification, applicants must have an Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 26 (with Mathematics or Technical Mathematics). Life Orientation is excluded for APS calculation.

Assessment procedures for extended curriculum with foundation provision:

Applicants who achieve the minimum APS of 23 will be considered. Applicants with a score of 21 (with Mathematics or Technical Mathematics) will be added to a waiting list.

DIPLOMA IN COMPUTER SYSTEMS ENGINEERING - 3

FOR APPLICANTS WITH A NATIONAL CERTIFICATE (VOCATIONAL) AT NQF LEVEL 4:Admission requirement(s):

A National Certificate (Vocational) with a bachelor’s degree or a diploma endorsement, with at least 50% (APS of 4) for English (home language or first additional language) and 60% for Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, 50% (APS of 4) for Physical Science or Applied Engineering Technology, 50% for Life Orientation (excluded for APS calculation), and 50% (APS of 4) for any two compulsory vocational subjects.

To be considered for the extended curriculum with foundation provision:

A National Certificate (Vocational) with a bachelor’s degree or a diploma endorsement, with at least 40% (APS of 3) for English (home language or first additional language) and 50% (APS of 4) for Mathematics and 40% (APS of 3) for Physical Science or Applied Engineering Technology and 50% for Life Orientation (excluded for APS calculation), and 50% (APS of 4) for any two compulsory vocational subjects.

Selection criteria:

A National Senior Certificate and a National N Certificate as published in Nated 191: N3 (NQF Level 4) issued by both the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with at least 50% (APS of 4) for English and 60% (APS of 5) for Mathematics N3 and Engineering Science N3.

To be considered for the extended curriculum with foundation provision:

A National Senior Certificate and a National N Certificate as published in Nated 191: N3 (NQF Level 4) issued by both the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the 2 Faculty of Information and Communication Technology Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with at least 40% (APS of 3) for English and 50% (APS of 4) for Mathematics N3 and Engineering Sciences N3.

• MINIMUM DURATION: Three years (Four years for the extended curriculum)

• PRESENTATION: Day classes. Classes and assessments take place during the week and on Saturdays.

• INTAKE FOR THE QUALIFICATION: January only.

• CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: Computer Systems Engineer, Systems Integrator, Electronic Engineering Technician, Electronics Tester, Software Engineer, Software Tester, Programmer, Web Developer, Systems Analyst, Network Administrator, Systems Administrator, Database Administrator, Systems Support, Network Planner.
