Cyprus Autumn Brings Cooler Weather andEver Improved Property Opportunities

September whizzed by in a flash and brought with it thesurprise of early rain which cleaned the air and settled thetemperatures. One of the things that make Cyprus such acharming place to live in is that, unlike countries nearer theequator, there are significant seasons here – fantastic springflowers from February to April, sunseaandsand summersand of course, just enough cold weather to give Christmasthe essential open fires and mulled wine atmosphere.

October is always a good month for property investment, especially in Paphos.Fitzgerald’s have several new listings of properties just arrived on the market andnew buyers are choosing this time of cooler weather to visit and make their choices.

Sadly Cyprus at present time is in the headlines for all the wrong reasons andprinting bad news seems to get the attention the media craves, never mind thereality: but then, when was the media hype a true indication of what is real andbalanced in a small country like Cyprus? Fortunately, each country is unique andthis is what makes it so appealing to visit, play or live there. Tourism relatedcompanies and their marketing strategists know this exceedingly well, no doubt tothe delight of their clients and countries they visit.

There are very many reasons why Cyprus is a desirable place to be. We are goingthrough a tough patch, but from what we hear there are lots of things that arechanging for the better. The banking crisis did not seriously affect prices but it didclear the air so that Cyprus property prices can now improve dramatically over thenext one to two years. There are such great opportunities now to buy qualityproperty, be it large, medium or small, and these are unlikely to be repeated.

There is a school of thought that suggests it might be safer for potential buyers torent for a few years and then make up their minds when they have gained somefamiliarity and seen how the market lies. This strategy is sound and mostlyapplicable to properties without the Title Deeds. Having Title Deed makes all thedifference. Over the last several years prices have already fallen substantially andto hesitate when prices are bottoming out is not a perfect strategy to get the mosthouse for your money. If you are really serious and want to take advantage ofpresent low prices, focus on what you want. A year is a long time in the propertymarket.

Our current sales reflect the growing number of enthusiastic investors who are'seizing the day' because they have liquidity at this time and want to invest. From a

Page 4: Digest october 2013

buyer’s point of view: if you see a house you love and can happily live in, then don'thesitate because it’s likely someone else will get in first at today’s prices and snatchyour dream away. Don’t rent and waste money. Buy your dream when you see it.Especially when the property comes from a licensed company which specialises inresale property at realistic prices with title deeds.

Aegean offers direct flights from Athens to Paphos

Aegean airlines has announced PaphosAthens flights for the first time, starting nextyear.

Head of the Paphos regional board of tourism, Nassos Hadjigeorgiou, welcomed theannouncement, saying it could only mean good news for Paphos.

“This move is the outcome of many efforts, including Aegean’s, which recogniseda business opportunity using Paphos airport,” he said.According to Hadjigeorgiou, the flights will commence in April 2014.

“Initially the airline will operate two flights a week – this number will increaseduring the summer season.”

The tourism chief said that the operation would help to contribute towards new jobopportunities and help to extend the tourist season.

“Aegean’s presence will also help the image of Paphos as well as that of theairport,” he said.

The airline is the largest Greek airline and has been a Star Alliance member sinceJune 2010. Aegean’s main base is Athens , with secondary hubs at Thessaloniki,Heraklion and Larnaca.

In addition, Hadjigeorgiou said that the new flights to and from Paphos wouldprovide an opportunity for third countries to use Athens airport as a connection toCyprus.

“This will be of particular benefit to travelers from tourist markets such as Germanyand central Europe,” he said.

The local tourist head said that theannouncement comes at a critical time forthe town.

“We welcome Aegean to Paphos andcollective efforts will ensure theyexperience a successful presence here. Wealso continue to strive to achieve our goalsfor penetration into new destinations, increase numbers of arrivals and furtherupgrade of Paphos airport and the aim ofsignificant yearround activity,” he said.

New recording from Paphos musician gets worldwideairtime

Paphos is an amazing place for music;just check out our entertainment pagesfor proof! But although, by world terms,Paphos is a tiny place, hardly worthy ofthe term city, people from the Paphosarea come up with amazing talents.

In the last week of September, JohnArtes, local musician and singer, wentpublic with an amusing and perhapsslightly shocking ‘fun punk’ CD called‘How Many Times by Cockney John’.Recorded on the island with Vic Malcolmof the 70’s UK band Geordie andmarketed by Tabitha Records(www.tabitharecords.web.com), thealbum and single tracks, plus the new release ‘Am On Me Holidays’, have beenplayed on radio stations as far afield as Australia, America, Scandinavia, Germanyand the U.K. Locally, the island’s Rock FM radio show ‘Double Dutch’ also gavetwohours airtime to Artes and interviewed him at length. ‘Great music’ remarkedDJ Joep.

Tabitha Records website confirms: ‘During the mid1970s you could find yourselfpacked … in sweaty London clubs watching andlistening to punk and new wave music. In 2013,we have Cockney John … an enigma, athrowback from the life and music of that periodbut 100% fun.

‘This album is a musical cocktail of anything thatwas 70’s punk and new wave with a twist oftoday. That genre of music mixed with theoriginal tunes from songsmith Vic Malcolmmeans that once you hear them you will not getthem out of your head.’

Artes has been on the music circuit a long time, playing internationally on the proscene since hewas 17, supporting many named bands of thetime around the world. Better known in Cyprusfor his association with Andrew Oliver and

Page 13: Digest october 2013

islandwide tours of hit shows like Great Balls of Fireand the smash new Cyprus band of 2013, TheFirebirds, Artes is delighted at the success of thepunk CD and his new single: ‘I’m filming now withJack (Vic Malcolm) for the next Cockney John videofor the song "Hole in me head" which promises to becrazier than ever.’

Heading into October, Artes will join Jo Allsop &The Bald Eagles in rehearsal for their new tourstarting in November (see events for dates). Thepremiere will be on Saturday 2 November at 8.30pmat The Old Kamaroudi Tavern, Konia. Tickets are an affordable €10 and meals areavailable in restaurant Tel: 26942044, 99309448.

John Artes’ CD, ‘How Many Times by Cockney John’ is available from TabithaRecords or as a download from Amazon and iTunes. His new single ‘Am On MeHolidays’ is out on DVD now.

Music and entertainment for the next six weeks

The mix of nationalities who have chosen Cyprus as their home make for a richcultural experience around this time of the year. There’s always a lively pub/clubculture – see Jezebel’s listings for a taste. Then there’s the theatre group Stage One,an ambitious AmDram Group based in Paphos, which has a reputation in Cyprusfor its quality and range of productions including comedy, drama, musical andpantomime – of course (www.stageonetheatre.com)

What's On with JezabelActivity has begun its annual transition from daytimeto evening as the sun becomes less of a focus and folkstart dressing a little more warmly and up, to go outof an evening. Some hotels and tourist bars will close, but many stalwarts stay open throughout winter forthe benefit of locals, expats and the ‘three monthers’ holidaying OAPs who choose to spend their pensionon a Cyprus holiday rather than on heating theirBritish home.
