DIGC202 Proposal: The Evolution of Western Music
Introduction
The presentation we are planning is based on how Western music has
evolved over time from religiously to materialistically focused. We thoughtthis would be an interesting idea because not many people think aboutwhere music has evolved from and they take this for granted. Our analysisbriefly covers the Middle Ages (5 th to 15 th Century) and the Renaissance(14 th to 17 th Century) periods. We did not want to go into too much detailon the early history because this would not leave enough room for the‘Modern Music’ section of our presentation. Following the history of Western music, we will fast-forward a few centuries and speak about whatmusic has become today, essentially a materialistic commodity. The
presentation will be in video form with a mix of music, short video clipsand spoken presentations. In the body of this proposal we will delve intothe sections we plan on covering in the final presentation.
Research Question
The ultimate question we will be answering in this presentation is How did Western music begin and what is it like today? Essentially there are twoparts to our question which we will answer in different sections. In the firstsection we are concentrating on the very beginning of Western music in
the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. We will use music history books forinformation because they are a valid and reliable source. A very limitednumber of music history books will be used because after a considerableamount of research we found the information is very similar. So lookingthrough pages and pages of different books would only waste time.Pictures from these history books will be incorporated into thepresentation to provide evidence for the ideas put forward. We will brieflytouch on the different centuries and how music was used, which is verydifferent to the use of music today. The presentation will be engaging andwill constantly address the question throughout without steering off-track.We hope to avidly engage the audience so that they can see thedistinction between yesterday and today’s music. At the end of thepresentation we will encourage the audience to think about the future of music and what it may become in 20, 50, 100 years from now.
We aim to:
• Provide an engaging, informing and entertaining presentation to ourclassmates.
• Encourage discussion and feedback on the presentation boththroughout and afterwards.

• Utilise numerous forms of technology in the production andpresentation process, including: a video camera, microphone, movieprograms (iMovie and Windows Movie Maker) and mp3 musictechnology.
• Answer our research question to provide a clear distinction on earlymusic and modern music.
Structure
The video presentation will begin with a music mash-up of differentmodern songs throughout time. Unfortunately, there is no early musicavailable for our presentation so we will only be playing modern music
from diverse genres. However, the modern music spans from 1960’s tothe 2000’s. After the 10 minute introduction we will move onto the bodyof our presentation, which is the bulk of information we have researched.
There are two sections: early western music and modern western music. The following sections in this proposal will address the informationcovered in the final presentation:
History of Western Music
• Overall we do not plan on giving a time line on the evolution of earlymusic. We believe that would be boring and would throw too muchinformation in the audience’s faces. We have hand-picked what wethink are the most important aspects of the development of earlymusic.
• Engaging introduction on why music is important to show why this isan interesting topic to develop a presentation around.
• The brief history of Western European and American music: it’sdevelopment in ancient Greece and Rome.
• How music was used in Ancient Greece and Rome: it was a staple totheir culture.
• The importance of religion in early music: It was a key influence.
• Reasons as to why the Ancient Greeks practised music, how theypracticed it, again religion’s role in this, influences in musicalcomposition.
• The types of instruments used in early Greek music along with a fewpictures to compliment.

• The purpose of music in the Middle Ages as thought by philosophersand church leaders. This is one of the key points we will be makingin our presentation because it differs greatly to how music isviewed, and created today. Music video clips and songs will be
played as evidence for the information we are presenting.• The renaissance period will be briefly touched upon, as well of the
technicality of music such as instruments and rhythm.
