     The staff is the fundamental

latticework of music notation, onwhich symbols are placed. The fivestaff lines and four intervening

spaces correspond to pitches ofthediatonic scale  – which pitch is

meant by a given line or space isdefined by theclef. In British

usage, the word "stave" is often

    used.

These extend the staff to pitchesthat fall above or below it. Such

ledger lines are placed behind thenote heads, and extend a smalldistance to each side. Multiple

ledger lines can be used whennecessary to notate pitches evenfarther above or below the staff.

    CLEF

Clef• Clefs define the pitch range, ortessitura, of the staff on which it is

placed. A clef is usuallytheleftmost symbol on a staff.

Additional clefs may appear in the

middle of a staff to indicate a change inregister for instruments with a widerange. In early music, clefs could beplaced on any of several lines on a staff.

    • G clef  (Treble clef )

The center of the spiral defines the line

    or space

on which it rests as thepitchG above middle C, orapproximately392 Hz. Positioned here,

it assigns G above middle C tothesecond line from the bottom of thestaff, and is referred to as the "treble

    • Cclef (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, andBass clefs)

These clefs point to the line (or space, rarely)

representing middle C, or approximately262 Hz. As

illustrated here, it makes thecenter line on the staffmiddle C, and is referred to as the "alto clef." This clefis used in modern notation for the viola. While all clefs

can be placed anywhere on the staff to indicate various tessitura, the C clef is most often considered a"movable" clef: it is frequently seen pointing instead tothe fourth line and called a "tenor clef". This clef is

used very often in music written for bassoon, cello, trombone, anddouble bass; it replaces the bass clef

when the number of ledger lines above the bass staffhinders easy reading.

    • C clefs were used in vocal music ofthe classical era and earlier;however, their usage in vocal

music has been supplanted by theuniversal use of the treble and bass clefs. Modern editions ofmusic from such periods generally

transpose the original C clef partsto either treble (female voices),octave treble (tenors), or bass clef

    (tenors and basses)

    • Middle C is the first ledger line above the

staff here. In old music, particularly vocal scores, this clef is sometimesencountered centered on the third staff

line, in which position it is referred to asabaritone clef; this usage has essentially become obsolete. The shape of the clefcomes from a stylized upper-case-F

(which used to be written the reverse ofthe modern F)
