DIES DIES Purpose: Dies are used to cut external threads on round stock. Dies are selected by diameter and number of threads per inch. Instructions: Select die according to diameter and threads per inch of the desired thread, a die handle, and allen wrenches appropriate to the die and handle. If the die has an adjusting screw ensure that it is correctly set using a fastener of the same thread size. Ensure stock is cut to the correct major diameter. Chamfer ends of the stock where the threads are to be cut. Select an oversized piece of round stock such that it will not enter into the cutting surfaces of the die. Chuck up the stock to be cut and the oversize stock into a lathe as shown in figures 4 and 5 below. DO NOT ROTATE THE LATHE WITH POWER . Ensure the starting side of the die touches the stock to be cut. The starting side is labeled or can be determined by its greater chamfer length on the cutting surface. Apply cutting oil to the die and stock. While applying pressure turn the die in ½ turn cutting increments followed by backing ¼ turn to break the chips created. g 1 - Location of dies Senior Design Suite Fig 2 - Location In Machine Shop Cabinet #3 Vendor: McMaster-Carr www.mcmaster.co m Fig 3 Die and Handle Fig 4 Setup in Lathe Fig 5 Setup in Lathe
