The festive spirit was still very much inevidence at the New Year Party in theclubhouse which was beautifullydecorated with the magnificent bestever Christmas trimmings, supplemented by Dave Hudson’s verytasteful “electronic fireworks”.

Equally magnificent was the faithsupper which started the evening’sproceedings. This was followed by thefirst party game, the Syston version of“Husband and Wife” which provokedmuch frivolity and was won by Men’sVice-President Ken and wife Hazel withPast President Rob and Janice runners-up. Thanks must go to Marilyn Woodfor putting the game together.

This was followed by a picture quizorganised by Pauline Wright, on thefloor dancing for the “young at heart”members and friends.

Whilst the evening ended with a raffleraising £77.

A good time was had by all.

Things toRemember . . .To be Confident1. Retaining confidence

is an art, dress well for your games, beafraid of no opponent, regard no shot asbeyond you, box on till the numbers are up,and confidence will always be in yourgame.

2. A bowl at the back is to cover if the jackis moved.

3. There is usually a good hand to a badrink, it pays to play it even though theopponents short bowls block the way. Manymatches are won or lost by forcingopponents to the bad hand.

4. Whatever your object is in taking green, look for the shoulder where it starts to turn, play at it, not to it.

5. Every player should have a set policyafter three or four ends they should knowwhat hand is best and what to avoid. Don’tfight a bad hand, it’s a losing game.

6. One of the negative things in bowls is wecan’t do this or can’t do that. Be positive, choose your shot and play it.

7. Congratulating an opponent followingdefeat is a courtesy in the game.

8. No game is lost till the final numbers areup, it is a good thing to keep that in mind.

9. When you are playing well on a goodhand, and if your opponents have a shortbowl in the draw on the good hand, don’tdo as some bowlers do and change theirhand, changing your hand can give youropponent the advantage.

So remember, don’t change your hand, ifyou keep to your line and a good length, you can draw past the short bowl.

10. Don’t let it upset you if you have a badend, relax and look forward to the nextend to play two good bowls. On the Monday just

after Christmas I joinedin the roll-ups that areorganised by JohnLamble at MeltonBowling Club.

Although not so many bowlers turnedup, possibly because of the holiday, butthose who did, really enjoyed thesession. This was my first time I had played inthis roll-up and I must say I found itnot only enjoyable but also soinstructive in the game of bowls. Our rink were playing triples and wefound that the opposing skip (whoshall be nameless, but one of hisnames is in the title of a favouriteChristmas Carol!) took the art ofwicking to a higher level, it was called‘Super-Wicking’, Des Eggitt would havebeen proud of him!Not content to wick off just one bowl,he used several bowls to wick off onmany occasions (he even put down awrong bias, wow!).But we managed to overcome hisexpertise and we won by the odd shot.Great time was had by all of us on ourrink. I may join in again for furtherlessons!Ed.

2014 – A new yearand a very special yearfor one of our LifeMembers. Muriel

Gibson will be 100 years old during thecoming year - I am sure this must bea record in our club to have someonewho is still able to come along to socialevents.Despite having a sight problem Murielis a regular at our monthly winterlunches and last month she was at ourChristmas Party where she was given agift from the County and as iscustomary, given a gift from the ladiesclub.Muriel has been a member of the clubfor as many years that I can rememberand I have very clear memories of heron the green playing lead – her brownwoods with a star engraved on werenever far from the jack when she wasplaying.Muriel was on the ladies committee forseveral years during which she was thecompetition secretary. On the greenMuriel was as she is now, a ratherreserved lady but she was always thereto congratulate a good shot orencourage any that were not so good.Despite not being able to see very wellMuriel is always interested in what isgoing on and really enjoys being told ofany hopes and plans for the future. We appreciate all that Muriel has donefor bowling in the past, and we allwish her well in her coming specialyear.

John organises a Roll-up everyMonday from 11.20am.

He and his helpers do a great joband we are all very grateful for

the work they do.Thank you John and we wish allour bowlers A Very Happy New
