Dear Mr Robinson,

RE: GCSEs and iGCSEs Results

Thank you for your request for information, received on 5th/ 8th/ 15th April, reference numbers: 2013/0023080, 2013/0023081, 2013/0023082, 2013/0023549, 2013/0024592, 2013/0024667. You requested information on GCSE and iGCSE results.

I have dealt with your requests under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (“the Act”). These requests are answered in turn below.

Request reference number: 2013/0023080

“Could you please provide me with the following information:         1. The number of students aged 11-17 in England, Wales and Northern     Ireland who have achieved.         1 GCSE     2 GCSEs     3 GCSEs     4 GCSEs     5 GCSEs     6 GCSEs

     7 GCSEs     8 GCSEs     9 GCSEs     10 GCSEs     11 GCSEs     12 GCSEs

13 GCSEs     14 GCSEs     15 GCSEs     16 or more GCSEs

         2. The number of students aged 11-17 in England, Wales and Northern     Ireland who have achieved.         1 IGCSE     2 IGCSEs     3 IGCSEs     4 IGCSEs     5 IGCSEs     6 IGCSEs

     7 IGCSEs     8 IGCSEs     9 IGCSEs     10 IGCSEs     11 IGCSEs     12 IGCSEs

13 IGCSEs     14 IGCSEs     15 IGCSEs     16 or more IGCSEs

         3. Many schools now enter pupils for both GCSEs and IGCSEs. Therefore     if one were to combine each pupil's achievement and count the     number of awards (eg 5 GCSEs and 4 IGCSEs would be 9 awards) how

many pupils would achieve:         1 award     2 awards     3 awards     4 awards     5 awards     6 awards

     7 awards     8 awards     9 awards     10 awards     11 awards     12 awards

13 awards     14 awards     15 awards     16 or more awards

Please can I have all the above information for each year since the     inception of the IGCSE.         Furthermore could I have each band taken exclusively, so that if a     pupil had achieved 5 GCSEs then they would only be counted in the 5     GCSE column rather than the 1,2,3,4,5 columns.

Lastly could I have the data as raw figures and as percentages of     the total cohort.”

The Department is responsible for education in England and therefore we do not hold the information you request for Wales or Northern Ireland. Details of how to contact other administrations are on the following websites:

Wales: http://wales.gov.uk/topics/statistics/?lang=en

Northern Ireland: http://www.deni.gov.uk/index/facts-and-figures-new/education-statistics.htm

Please find the requested information for England enclosed in Excel format based on our standard reporting cohort of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 (those pupils who have completed GCSE and equivalent level study).

Please note that our data did not include iGCSEs prior to 2009/10; from 2009/10 onwards we hold information for accredited Cambridge International and Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 certificates and any direct predecessors to those certificates, which we term “legacy iGCSEs”. Therefore figures for years prior to 2009/10 are not held. More detailed information what qualifications are accredited or not accredited is available on page 18 of the main text under “Documents” at the link below.

Please note that pupils may take multiple GCSEs and the percentages in this case do not make sense as you asked for the number of GCSE entries by grade.

You may find it useful to see the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) website available at the link below, which provides summer results for GCSEs for candidates of all ages; these results are published by grade and there is also country breakdowns:

You may also find it useful to see the Cambridge and Edexcel iGCSE results available at the links below:

Please note that figures given by JCQ, Cambridge or Edexcel at the above links may have different coverage to our figures in terms of geographic areas or age groups in particular.

We publish GCSE and iGCSE pupil results at the end of Key Stage 4 and our data extracts are developed for this purpose. The Department is unable to confirm whether it holds the information you have requested, because it estimates that the cost of determining whether it holds the information would exceed the cost threshold applicable to central Government. This is £600 and represents the estimated cost of one person spending 3½ working days in determining whether the Department holds the information and specifying the necessary data extracts if it does hold the information.

I have considered ways in which your request might be narrowed or limited in order to reduce the cost of complying with it. However, due to the nature of your request and that our existing data is not specified to include such information I do not consider that the Department would be able to provide the information you have requested without exceeding the cost limit

Regulation 5 provides that where two or more requests for information are made to a public authority by one person, the estimated cost of complying with any of the requests is to be taken to be the total costs of complying with all of them where the two or more requests relate to any extent to the same or similar information, and those requests are received within any period of 60 consecutive working days.

As the six requests were received on 5th/ 8th/ 15th April and that the appropriate limit under section 12 of the Act will also have been exceeded by complying with this request, within a 60 day period, the Department is not therefore obliged to comply with this request and under section 12 will not be processing it further.
