PEACEHEALTH LABORATORIES
A L E R T
WHAT’S NEW? Effective immediately, rapid immunodiagnostic (antigen) tests (65090 and 65200) are discontin-ued at the Springfield, Oregon laboratory. See table on reverse for complete information.
WHY THE CHANGE?Although the turnaround time for rapid immunodiagnostic testing is short, the sensitivity is generally low for most commercial products. Influenza and RSV rapid immunodiagnostic tests have low sensitivity in elderly patients and poor specificity when the prevalence of virus is low.
Negative rapid immunodiagnostic test results should not be used to rule out an influenza or RSV infection in any patient. Alternative test-ing with better performance characteristics will continue to remain available.
WHAT’S BETTER?DFA testing is intended to replace rapid immuno-diagnostic testing due to its similar turnaround time (90th percentile TAT during 2012/2013 respiratory virus season was 2 hours) and supe-rior accuracy.
Individual PCR testing for Influenza A&B (58228 Influenza A/Influenza B PCR Panel) and RSV (58222 Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) PCR) may be obtained in addition to a larger respiratory virus panel that also includes rhino- virus, human metapneumovirus, adenovirus and parainfluenza viruses 1-3 (58370 Respiratory Virus Panel by PCR).
WHAT STAYS THE SAME?Collection method: nasopharyngeal swab, nasal aspirate, nasal wash or nasal swab. Turnaround time: same day as tested.
