Thriller opening conventions The conventions that are used within a thriller consist of characters, camerawork, editing, mise-en-scene, soundtrack, enigma and atmospheres. In the opening of the film it should introduce the main characters of the story and tells you a little bit about them and show what part this character is to play in the story, it should also subtlety show their characteristics and how they act and it should also help to determine whether this person has a good part or a bad part to play within the story. The camerawork should host a varied amount of shots within the movie or the title sequence to give it a different effect throughout the movie and to have a different effect on the audience for example an extreme close up will make the audience feel unnerved with what they are seeing and give them a sense of being claustrophobic. Editing can give the overall film a better effect with its fades in and out and giving it a faster pace or slower pace to make what is happening in the film better for the audience to distinguish Editing also allows certain things to be put into the shot which cannot be done I've to make the shot look better Mise-en-scene is used within the film to make its overall quality to look better with the makeup and costumes n the actors and with lighting and setting of the film and certain props, props within the film help to tell a story or certain props are what the storyline is based along. Soundtrack makes a film better by what is added with non-diegetic sound and the sound that is created when filming which is diegetic and these certain sounds will go with the action of the film making them Synchronous or asynchronous where the sound does not follow the action. The enigma in the movie is what the film is based on and these questions need answering but there will be one main enigma with many small enigmas surrounding it within the story line an example of this is a murder and the film being about who was the murderer.

Thriller opening conventions

The conventions that are used within a thriller consist of characters, camerawork, editing, mise-en-scene, soundtrack, enigma and atmospheres.

Editing can give the overall film a better effect with its fades in and out and giving it a faster pace or slower pace to make what is happening in the film better for the audience to distinguish Editing also allows certain things to be put into the shot which cannot be done I've to make the shot look better

Mise-en-scene is used within the film to make its overall quality to look better with the makeup and costumes n the actors and with lighting and setting of the film and certain props, props within the film help to tell a story or certain props are what the storyline is based along.

Atmosphere is what that certain scene creates towards the audience if it were a happy scene it will put a good image in the audiences mind where as if it was a violent scene this would put a bad image in the mind of the audience.

Dexter – analyse

This Shot here is an extreme close up; this creates a feeling of being unnerved for the audience because the audience may feel claustrophobic at the sight of this. This image also creates a violent feel because it make an everyday routine look as if it could deadly as the image could also be preserved as someone’s neck getting cut and someone getting strangled but this is not what is happening and the fact it is extreme close up makes it unappealing to the audience.

This shot is also an extreme close up and creates the same feel as the previous shot and makes a unnerving feeling for the audience, this is perceived to be someone cutting someone or something which makes us think that it is causing harm when really it is just cutting open the packaging of some meat that is about to be cooked. Just by seeing a knife in this sequence we would associate this being a quite violent series.

This shot here is another extreme close up and this also goes along with the theme because of the knife which we associate it with but also what is perceived to be on the knife is blood when really it is tomato ketchup because we can see that it is clearly a meal, but this also gives a sense of feeling of unnerved because it is not an appetising thing to look at.

These two images also go along with the theme of violence once again showing a knife but the way this knife looks gives it almost a more distinguished feel of violence and also the back ground is red connoting blood which also shows violence. The next image is showing an orange being squeezed and the inside is red because it is a blood orange which once again goes with the theme of blood and violence but the image is also unpleasant for the viewers since it is an extreme close up.

These images here also make us think violence because they have made an everyday task look violent, to us this could look like someone is being strangled in both images and its creates an unnerved atmosphere for the viewer because of the extreme close up and how the viewer perceives it to be with the strangulation with the lace and the top and the tight grasp of the lace and the top being tight round the face makes it look violent.
