About the DMTI Targeted Activities

These DMTI Targeted Activities modules are designed to be played or completed with a partner or in small groups. These supplement the Primary Math Assessment and DMTI curricular materials.

The activities are intended for teachers or caregivers to play with children to build necessary math skills and math language. Each activity can be played for 10 to 20 minutes. And if there are additional activities in a module, they are built to be more advanced.

PMA – Grade 1Interpreting Context


What’s involved:• Seeing quantities and operations

• Understanding what the child knows or doesn’t know in the problem

• Problem solving

• Seeing patterns

Why it matters:• Builds critical thinking and problem solving

skills

• Gives insight into what a student understands and how the student thinks

• Highlights misconceptions that may be hidden with symboliccalculations

Interpreting Context

Interpreting ContextDirections:• Print the beach scene template or the set of questions. • Complete activity I and then II


Interpreting ContextActivity I:• Look at the beach scene (printed or online).• Ask the child what they see in general. Make up a story. • Next, ask what math statements they can make. (Take turns counting

or asking addition or subtraction questions.)

Interpreting ContextActivity II:• Have your child look at the beach scene and then ask the following set

of questions.


Interpreting Context1. How many turtles do you see in the

picture?2. If the turtle swam away, how many

turtles would you see now?3. How many more turtles would need to

come so there would be ten turtles? - Change the number a few times (e.g., 15, 20, 30, etc), and then ask your child what is happening.


Interpreting Context4. How many crabs do you see? 5. How many total legs are on these

crabs? 6. How many total legs would there be

if there were ___ (4 crabs, 5 crabs, 6 crabs)?


Interpreting Context7. How could you put the colored fish

into two groups? How many would be in each group?

8. How could you group the colored fish in a different way? How many colored fish would there be all together?

9. You see eight fish swimming around. If two fish swim away, how many fish would there be? (What if 3, 4, 5, or 6 fish swam away? How many fish would be in the underwater scene?)


Interpreting Context10. Where is the octopus in the

picture? How many tentacles does it have?

11. How many more tentacles does the octopus have than you have legs?

12. How many tentacles would there be in all if there were three octopuses in the picture?


Interpreting Context13. There are 12 creatures moving

around. If three of the creatures are crabs, how many creatures are not crabs?

14. There are five jewels in or around the treasure chest. If we find nine more jewels in the chest, how many total jewels would we have?
