Detailed Program Outline Part 1 LEADERSHIP MANAGEMENT MASTERCLASS There is an important distinction between management and leadership. In the modern organisational environment there is an increasing demand for manager / leaders, people who demonstrate leadership qualities and are capable of leading and motivating teams of people to achieve clearly defined and measurable goals. What is leadership? There are many descriptions of what leadership is but there are five levels of leadership, which acts as a framework for thinking about abilities and strategies needed to be an effective leader: Personal leadership development – self leadership (in recognition that individuals take on leadership roles and that leadership can be learnt) Leadership at the team level (in recognition that leaders don’t work alone) Leadership at the agency level (in recognition that we work within complex systems and need to change organisations to impact on health and well-being of individuals and populations – systems thinking and action is important for change) Leadership at the community level (in recognition that we work within and with the community to effect change). Leadership at the professional level (means we need to engage different professional groups for a unified voice to influence change). The second issue is, “Is leadership the same as management?” This is important because a lot of people who work, are really good at management and often by default have to take on a leadership role. Suggesting that leadership is part of management – along with ‘manage projects’, ‘facilitate meetings’, ‘coordinate staff’, ‘demonstrate business skills’ and ‘work as part of a team’. Management produces order and consistency and leadership produces change and movement. What about “leaders are born not develop”? The main leadership traits included Intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity and sociability.

Page 8: Designing your Recipe for Leadership Success

8

More recent research has identified traits such as trustworthiness, extroversion, assertiveness, emotional stability, enthusiasm, sense of humour, warmth, high tolerance for frustrations, passion for the work and the people, emotional intelligence, courage, internal locus of control, AND the list goes on! Makes it all seem a superhuman effort for anybody to be a leader. You all probably have your own list of traits that you associate with effective leadership. Other theories have challenged this personality driven view about leaders e.g. Skills approach, style approach (behaviour of leader); situational approach; contingency theory; path-goal theory; leader-member exchange theory, transformational leadership; and team leadership. Theory helps to understand different aspects of leadership, but what is most interesting is to understand how people lead – the type of leadership roles they take on. Four different roles for leadership Analyst (emphasises rationality, analysis, logic, facts and data). Caregiver (emphasises the importance of people and relationships, prefer collaboration to competition and cares about others – look for ways to understand and respond to needs, concerns etc – is a facilitator who listens, supports and empowers). Warrior (who believes that managers and leaders live in a world of conflict and scarce resources – welcomes battle and competition rather than fear or avoidance). Wizard (who brings imagination, insight, creativity, vision, meaning, and magic to the work of leadership). To be more effective in bringing about change, we need to develop and foster leaders who have a broad range of complementary leadership strengths as Analysts, Caregivers, Warriors and Wizards. This links back to the first point where leadership isn’t really about individual glory, but is about collective action where a team’s approach to leadership is probably a more effective way to go. The need for developing and fostering more effective leadership – focusing on developing the leadership skills and abilities of people does not take away from collective action – it should enhance it.

The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say "I." And that's not because they have trained themselves not to say "I." They don't think "I." They think "we"; they think "team”. They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don't sidestep it, but "we" gets the credit…. This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done. With regard to leadership and management – they are different in purpose, and the skills needed to fulfil both types of roles are different. This needs to be acknowledged and thought through when we are looking to make more effective leaders. The manager asks how and when; the leader asks what and why. However, whatever type of leader you are… Just be a good one…. Exercises Include:

• Determine your 7 Sources of Leadership Authority • Identify some challenges and realities of managerial life • Take a look at the differences between management and leadership • Plot yourself on the Leadership Management Matrix • Determine your preferred leadership style • Determine your Management Tendencies • Learn how to adapt your Leadership Style using the Four Leadership

Styles available Developing your People The situational leader realises the importance of developing their people. “Give people a fish and they eat for a day; teach people how to fish and they will eat for a lifetime.” It isn’t enough to simply provide the appropriate amounts of guidance and support for a given level of development, you must develop the competence and commitment of your people so that they’re self-motivated rather than dependent on others for direction and guidance. Exercises Include:

• The Art of Delegation • Delegation Tips • The Benefits of Effective Delegation • Delegation - The Process

Building High Performance Teams All organisations today realise the importance of creating team cultures in the workplace in order to realise maximum productivity and efficiency. To achieve high performing teams requires skills not traditionally acquired by managers. As organisations move toward being more flexible and responsive to their clients needs they must restructure themselves in order to be more effective. One of the best ways to do this is to create environments that are more ‘team based’. Teams in organisations create greater synergy and better utilise the skills, knowledge and experience of everyone involved. To achieve this, managers need to understand the principles of team dynamics, how teams are motivated, how individuals work with and within teams.

Four Staged Approach 1. Establishing objectives This stage in the process involves a one-on-one session between the coach and coachee to identify the “ Coaching Outcomes” in the following areas:

• Skills & Performance Development • Business Issues Management • Career Planning

2. Situational analysis Use of interviews/research and diagnostic tools relative to agreed outcomes identified in the establishing objectives phase. Diagnostic tools would be selected from our extensive inventory of tools, some examples are:

• Communication Effectiveness • Emotional Intelligence Style Profile • Learning Style • Leadership Effectiveness • Management Effectiveness • Personal Effectiveness • Situational Leader • Team Effectiveness

3. Development of coaching plan It is here that we prioritise the objectives by developing a coaching plan. Base line measurements are agreed upon to ensure that the outcomes of the plan can be truly assessed. It is essential that the coaching plan be aligned to individual and organisational goals in order to be effective. Another aspect of this stage is a “go forward” action plan. The identification of short-term actions (first 30 days), medium-term actions (60 days) and long-term actions (90 days) are essential to the success of our holistic approach. 4. Implementation of Coaching Plan Once the plan is agreed upon, it is implemented and put into action. In order to ensure that the coaching program is effective a review of the action plan is conducted through face to face, telephone and email communication. Further monthly and weekly action plans may be developed to supplement the original plan to ensure that the objectives of the program are achieved.
