The two day Festival program will be made up of concurrent events and exhibitions staged by – ‘Partner’ - organizations across Historic South End. The Festival is both a cultural and a commercial event. Projects staged as part of the program range from major exhibitions to trade events, from installations to talks and seminars, and from product launches to receptions, private views and parties, and sales promotions. The majority of events are free of charge - enabling visitors to participate, listen, learn, commission and make purchases.

The Festival model is simple, allowing partner organizations to pursue their own objectives through Festival activity. Events can be big or small, fun or serious, public or by invitation, free or fee-paying. They simply have to be relevant (design-related) and delivered to a high quality. Local Artists Reach for the Stars – Or at Least the Top of a Water Tower 2nd Annual Design Center of the Carolinas Highest Design Art ContestThe Design Center of the Carolinas (DCC) and Ram Realty Services began their second annual art contest for Charlotte’s design and arts community on Monday, February 28 with online voting beginning on Monday, March 28. Local artists competed online for votes to win the chance for his or her work to be displayed on the highest canvas in town, a 125’ water tower, plus a $1,000 check. The winning selection was determined by public online voting at www.designcentercarolinas.com where each entry is displayed. In addition to the artist winning a $1,000, Carolina Pad will donate an additional $5,000 in classroom supplies to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg School in need, championed by the winning designer. All schools selected were also listed on the web site to encourage voting.

Votes were accepted through April 11, 2011 and the winner and the winning school will be announced at 1:30pm Friday, April 29 at the Design Your Life Festival in South End. The contest was open to professionals from Charlotte’s design community working in businesses such as advertising agencies, photography studios, graphic design firms, printing companies, architectural firms as well as arts programs at local universities and community colleges. The theme of this year’s contest is “Classic Meets Contemporary” with each participant sharing his or her vision of how Charlotte’s heritage is inspiring artisans today. The winner’s artwork will appear on the Design Center of the Carolinas water tower for a twelve-month period. The water tower is a South End landmark and symbol of the surrounding creative community.
