Problem Identified
PROBLEM DESCRIPTIONHow should schools and teachers ensure a safe environment for students’ at schools.
WHY IS IT AN URGENT PROBLEM?India is already in a youth bulge phase. Around 28% population is under the age of 14 including ~125M primary students. Access to quality education system and raising educational attainment levels is a key to power the country’s growth and economic prosperity.
We need not debate the many positive effects of primary education. So either the kids go to school or the schools come to the kids. With cons of Home-schooling outweighing the pros, we should be facilitating students’ return to schools.
Children, particularly young children, thrive on routine and they require a lot of attention and care. Education is not only about academic content but also a cognitive process designed to make children a better citizens.

SOLUTIONS & IDEAS
From the ideas we explored and debated, we saw that they could be classified into 2 broad buckets;
Ideas that brought ‘Schooling’ to the comfort and safety of their homes.
Ideas that don’t intend to radically changes the existing system rather propose a set of strategic interventions, Interventions that added elements of safety and awareness to the well-accustomed-to, existing systems.
ExplorationsIdeas that brought ‘Schooling’ to the comfort and safety of their homes. Strategic interventions that bring in the elements of safety & awareness to existing systems.
Home Schooling
Remote Learning
Cons:• Not everyone has access to a computer/tablet. Phone screen sizes are too small for this purpose.• Not all kids can study by themselves, many need personal attention.• Parents are not teachers; they lack patience and have low tolerance levels. • Each small task is expected to be done by the kid themselves, right from sharpening their pencils to
wrapping up their materials at the end of class. Too much expected from kids.• This is not a regular way of working, kids need to be taught to adapt to this new way of working. • Compliance issues at home, parents are not setting the right examples. They themselves are dealing with
uncertainties.• Many household need help w.r.t to internet, devices, etc. Cost is a big impediment to many.• Households with multiple children will have difficulty, lack of space, devices for each and concentration in
a busy house is key a challenge even for the most dedicated.
Pros:• Schools have a built-in structure.• Kids get to mingle with friends.• Skills and holistic development is best possible only in a focussed environment.• Professional help and assessment to gauge a child’s development. Better equipped for course correction.• No need to overhaul the system, no major changes in the existing systems, processes required.

DESIGN PROCESS
We relied strategic design principles to uncover certain underlying principles that can be used to drive adoption and appeal considering our target group.
We followed the divergence-convergence model in order to unpack the problem statement which helped us understand and contextualize the problem at hand. Further to understand how the problem can be solved (if at all) either through a complete system overhaul, a series of
interventions or tweaking existing solutions.
User centered principles guided us throughout the process as we
ImpactIMPACT OF YOUR SOLUTIONWhile radical changes and system overhauls sound exciting and tempting to offer. We believe it will be more prudent to bring about small changes that help existing systems adapt and cater to the needs of the ‘new normal’.
Our small interventions aim to bring in a sense of safety and increase confidence in the existing school setup.
With design being able to bring about a behavioural change in children, parents can look at resuming their work lives without worrying about the child’s health.
Effective tracing can further facilitate in-time treatment in case of an outbreak at school.
While a complete wipe-out cannot be guaranteed until a vaccine is available, these interventions can provide the comfort of kids being enabled to take on the challenge.
Execution & Viability
REPRESENTATIVE IMAGEINDICATING HOW YOU
WOULD EXECUTE YOUR IDEA/SOLUTION
HOW CAN YOUR SOLUTION BE IMPLEMENTED AND SUCCESSFUL?• The key challenge is in producing the ‘Tattoos’ but any existing
merchandise setup can be tweaked to handle this ensuring quicker delivery. No new industry setup required.
• Small in size and super portable – easily can be transported across the length and breadth of the country. Storage not a problem.
• Easy to apply – most kids are already familiar with how-to-use guidelines.
• Can be exchanged once the kids outgrow. The dispenser watch and helmets are reusable after sanitisation.
• Eco-friendly construction material reduces ecological impact that masks/gloves generally cause.
• May be it can be printed at home provided the raw material is made available in your local hobby store.
