For over 35 years the R&B Switchgear group has provided vital support through a network of highly skilled electro-mechanical engineers, ensuring the reliability and operation of power distribution systems for clients both in the UK and internationally.
Experts in supporting the lifecyle of switchgear products across a global client base, which comprises many of the world’s largest blue-chip companies.
Since the company’s incorporation over 35 years ago, R&B has
developed an impressive global client base and is recognised as a
leading electrical service provider. We have a strong track record of
taking on complex switchgear and power distribution projects,
combining years of experience and knowledge to ensure all of our work
is completed to a high standard and in line with ISO 9001 procedures.
With workshops based in both the UK and USA specialising in the
design and manufacture of bespoke low & medium voltage switchgear,
R&B can provide a complete solution from initial design concept

through to manufacture, installa tion and commissioning. We operate in
just about every major industry sector, from Marine and Oil & Gas, to Rail
and Construction.
Our historic ties to Whipp & Bourne switchgear give us an unparalleled
level of expertise on its heritage products, and our commitment to
supporting owners of this equipment enable our customers to maintain
and extend the life of their electrical distribution systems which would
otherwise be made redundant.

Repairs & Modif icat ions
To support our on-site services, R&B offer an
in-house repair service for all types of circuit
breakers, contactors, motor starters and any other
forms of switchgear. We stock a large variety of
obsolete parts within our technical stores which have
been built up over many years, and as approved
suppliers for most major manufacturers, we are able to
source any necessary replacement parts at a low cost.
Retrof i t t ing
As switchgear nears the end of it’s life, replacement parts
become obsolete leading to reliability issues and in some
cases component failure. For businesses who simply can’t
afford downtime or loss of production during lengthy
switchboard replacements, we offer retrofitting as a cost-
effective alternative. Our highly experienced project
managers are on hand to provide tailored on-site solutions, where
all materials are designed and manufactured to fit at the work site,
ensuring down time is kept to an absolute minimum.
SAP AUTHORISED l
R&B Switchgear group specialise in the design, manufacture and installation of LV and MV switchgear up to and including 33kV.
Utilising a large team of field service and commissioning technicians together with dedicated
workshops located throughout the UK and in USA, Florida, we are able to offer a wide range of
electrical services with the flexibility to suit all requirements. Whether it’s a new switchboard, circuit
breaker retrofit, or protection relay testing, R&B has the technical capability and resources to
provide all services in a professional and timely manner.
OUR SERVICES
All of our field service engineers are trained and certified thermographer’s, meaning all
of our surveys are carried out by an experienced electrical engineer with a great
understanding of common faults. For businesses looking to extend the life of their
electrical assets, we also offer a range of certified thermographic windows, with
additional options for partial discharge accessories.

Low Voltage
For medium voltage systems up to and including 33kV, we can provide withdrawable vacuum or SF6 switchgear from all the major manufacturers,
such as ABB, Siemens, Schneider and also our partner LSIS. We can work to any specification depending on customer preferences and require-
ments, as all switchboards are designed and built in our UK (Manchester) workshop, where they undergo final factory acceptance tests.
Some of our featured projects include the SSR3B project, where we constructed six 11kV switchboards and a number of low voltage switchboards
to be installed in stations across the London Underground, such as Shepherds Bush and Chiswick Park. Other turn key projects include a major
overhaul of the electrical system onboard the mighty servant 3 semisubmersible vessel when it accidentally sank during routine operations.
In addition, R&B switchgear can also provide all of the necessary site engineers to install, test and service any of our
manufactured switchboards, including site acceptance tests and commissioning. Further options include arc flash
protection systems and thermographic windows.
Medium Voltage
We offer a range of low voltage distribution switchgear, tailor made to suit individual requirements. Each
switchboard is bespokely designed to client specifications and electrical parameters outlined during the
engineering process, which R&B can lead internally, or work to design criteria provided by consultants.
All of our new switchgear is fully type tested and built to either European or ANSI standards depending on the
region and installation requirements. We can supply switchboards with busbar ratings of up to 6300A and fault
levels of over 100kA.
Our switchgear is installed across many major institutions around the UK, such as universities, hospitals and
other public sector buildings. Marine and offshore installations are also catered for, with a wealth of knowledge
and experience working with Lloyds, DNV and BV to ensure successful acceptance of our products.
MANUFACTURING
R&B are well placed to support Whipp & Bourne owners, with many of our specialists involved in both the original design and commissioning of its heritage products.
A team of Whipp & Bourne specialists offering unrivalled knowledge and assistance.
We offer complete refurbishments of Whipp & Bourne circuit
breakers & contactors using a large stock of Whipp & Bourne spare
parts. This gives us the ability to repair and restore these types of
circuit breakers and contactors, during which we dissasemble the
circuit breaker/contactor down to componenant level and rebuild/
calibrate with new or refurbished parts and equipment. We expect
our refurbishments to extend the life of this equipment by at least
another 25 years.
For the few models where this option isn’t available, our engineering
department have developed an extensive list of retrofit solutions.
These comprise of new switchgear being installed within the original
housing, so that the new circuit breaker/contactor can be used
without modifications to the existing panel. All mechanical
interlocks are modified to suit the new circuit breaker, allowing a
simple installation and no shutdown requirements when reinstated
back into service.

Sector Special ists
A few examples of our experience across mult ip le industry sectors
R&B carried out major switchboard work
during the dry dock of the MV Oceana. 30+
ABB circuit breakers on the main LV and
emergency switchboard were retrofitted,
allowing the removed breakers to be utilised
as spares for the remaining circuits. These
included a combination of direct replacements,
and standard retrofits with busbar and fixing
plates engineered on site. 10x LV breakers
were also installed as part of the scrubber
project.
Working on behalf of Alstom, R&B completed
a £1.4 million project which was part of the
London Underground’s biggest rebuilding pro-
gramme. Working with the UK Power Networks
project team we designed and manufactured
a series of LV and MV switchboards for the
SSR3B project on the District Line. The equip-
ment was constructed and tested at our
workshop in Manchester, taking
over 18 months to complete and
delivered on time and in budget.
The Brent Delta decommissioning project
required additional generation and upgrades
to the distribution switchgear. R&B
manufactured and installed extension panels
on the main LV switchboards, and carried out
modification work to circuits on the 11kV
system. Feeder circuits on the MV switchboard
were converted to incomers, enabling the main
11kV switchboard to be back fed from other
parts of the system.
