America and the world are in the middle of technology changes that have altered our way of life and our culture in so many ways that its long-term effects are merely new ideas waiting to be discovered in the not-so-distant future.

Everyone is now familiar with Facebook, the social network phenomenon.  What the residents of Desert Hot Springs and the Coachella Valley are not familiar with is a new, totally different, communications platform and application that is right here in their own backyard.  It’s called “DHS Today. Com”

DHS Today.Com is the brainchild of Paul Rothbein. a former New Jersey resident, now living in Desert Hot Springs.  Rothbein, approached Max

Liebermann a long time  Desert Hot Springs businessman, newspaper publisher and owner of Desert Local News.com., with the possibility of partnering up in his new venture.  Together, they will   implement a new communications business by presenting fresh and profitable ideas and methods for Valley businessmen, and Valley cities and local governments to be more responsive to their clients and residents using the internet.

“Paul is providing the creative ideas for this new and unique application of internet technologies”, said Liebermann, adding, “He is young, bright, and knows and understands the new social networking and vertical integration concepts and models now required for business.”  I’m very

pleased to be a part of his forward thinking plans.

Rothbein, a Hofstra University graduate specializing in Communications will be responsible for creating a social, vertical network that is being designed to assist business and governmental entities in the ever-changing world of websites and technology.

“Facebook, for example, makes a community better.  We will be building virtual communities”, said Rothbein at a recent meeting at The Miracle Springs Hotel, in Desert Hot Springs.   “DHS Today.Com, is not a software company.  Software can makes things better, that’s true; however, we’re not about technology.  We’re a communications company that uses technology with a grassroots feeling” he said smiling.

Rothbein, who has both marketing and advertising sales experience says, “clients of DHS Today.Com will be the beneficiaries of enhanced opportunities for both the business community, and the public sector alike. Grassroots organizations will benefit in reaching a wider audience for information on issues that are important to them.”  He continued, saying “…We will have consultants available to help our clients maximize their ads and/or information that they put on websites, like DHS Today.Com.  We’re also looking to have specific websites available for each city, focusing on issues unique to their residents and businesses.”

To join the website is free.  There is no cost and no red tape involved.   According to  Rothbein, “the members of the website are like “owners”.  They are in control.  The thrust of the DHS Today.Com website will be directed at small business.  “It’s sort of like franchising, not licensing.”

The Myster y of Life O n Stage at M ark Tap er Forum

For mi l lennia man has been ask ing “what is the meaning of l i fe ; why am I here ;   where did I come from; and where am I headed?”    When I r ish play wr ight Samuel Beckett debuted Wait ing For Godot in 1953, he posited s imi lar quest ions into a stor y of t wo men wait ing around for an appointment with a myster ious M r. Godot , who, when he arr ives wi l l expla in ever ything they are wonder ing about .   What wi l l be expla ined?  How long must they wait?   I n the words of Conan-Doyle’s Sher lock Holmes (another f ic t ional charac ter) “… Pat ience Watson, a l l wi l l be revealed”.  However, in the inter vening f i f t y-nine years not much as been revealed.   Lots of theor ies and speculat ions, but not much enl ightenment – unt i l now, that i s .

“ Wait ing For Godot ”, the revival produc t ion current ly onstage at the Mark Taper Forum; ins ightful ly d i rec ted by M ichael Arabian, i s a gem of a produc t ion, and the progenitor of the school of theatre audiences have come to k now as the “ theatre of the absurd”.   I t s tars t wo of the wor ld ’s ack nowledged Beckett scholars and per formers in the t win lead roles.   84 years-young Alan Mandel l as Estrogon, a lso k nown as Gogo,

i s one of the few l iv ing ac tors to have maintained a work ing re lat ionship with Beckett unt i l h is death.   The wonder ful I r i sh ac tor Barr y McGovern, former ly of the famed Abbey Theatre of Dubl in , has played the role of Vladimir, a lso k nown as Didi , more t imes than any l iv ing ac tor.  Together, these t wo legends br ing such understanding, c lar i t y and bel ievabi l i t y to their per formances that , for me at least , the enigma that was “ Wait ing For Godot ” over the years, i s d ispel led forever.

Both charac ters c la im that Godot is an acquaintance but in fac t they hardly k now him, admitt ing that they would not recognize him were they to see him.   To occupy their t ime they eat , they s leep, converse, argue, s ing, p lay games, swap hats, and even contemplate suic ide – anything “ to hold the terr ib le s i lence at bay ”.     Program notes make mention of the play ’s posit ive recept ion when i ts been per formed before inmates in pr isons around the wor ld.   The wait ing par t , the centra l theme of the play, real ly resonates with those denied f reedom.   I n the play Didi and Gogo are only “ t rapped”, because they c l ing to the concept that f reedom is poss ible.   Freedom, according to

Beckett , i s a state of mind and so is impr isonment.

Beckett over the years has steadfast ly maintained that h is p lay is not re l igious in e i ther a l legor y or in i ts tone.   However, cr i t ics , ac tors, and audiences a l ike are not so sure.   Numerous books and essays have been wr it ten about the play ’s subjec t matter, a l l in an ef for t to expla in what Beckett refused to discuss – the real meaning of “ Wait ing For Godot ”.   Nonetheless, the play has a def in i te appeal and new audiences of young people are rediscover ing the myster y and the depth of Beckett ’s masterpiece.

Providing sol id suppor t in the Taper ’s revival are James Cromwel l (of movie fame) as the dic tator ia l ar istocrat Pozzo, Hugo Armstrong as Luck y, the s lave/ser vant of Pozzo, and L J Benet as a messenger f rom Godot.

Cromwel ls’ Pozzo, when v iewed through the lens of 21st centur y Amer ica , appears to resonate with the audience as the embodiment of the 1% in the 1% vs. the 99% movement.  Hugo Armstrong br ings a h idden strength to his por trayal of Luck y, (a l though most wouldn’t

think he was so luck y) , as the s lave/ser vant of the cruel and unfeel ing Pozzo.  A young f i f teen year- old L J Benet por trays a youthful messenger/acolyte of Godot ’s who keeps Gogo and Didi on tenterhooks by re laying Godot ’s messages as to when he wi l l see them.   Although there are t wo starr ing roles and three sol id suppor t ing roles, the ent i re produc t ion puts for th a strong ensemble ef for t , which makes for a t ruly t ranscendent produc t ion capped by a c lar i t y rarely found in “Godot ” produc t ions.

I n the technical and creat ive team depar tment,

John Iacovel l i ’s spare, save for a lone leaf- denuded-tree set des ign, not only matches but enhances the lonel iness of the charac ters’s p l ight .   Helping set and maintain the mood throughout the produc t ion, are the l ight and projec t ion designs by Br ian Cale, a long with costume designs by Chr istopher Acebo that a lso mirror ’s the t imel iness of the stor y.

“ Wait ing For Godot ” runs through Apr i l 22nd.  For reser vat ions and t icket information cal l the Box O ff ice at 213-628-2772 or go onl ine to w w w.center theatregroup.org.

S andy Hackett ’s Tribute to Frank , Dean, S ammy , and Jo ey

SH: “Absolutely not . I can’t speak for the other per formers, but for me, no trepidat ion, whatsoever. Remember, I spent many years of f and on here with my dad. He was a ver y good f r iend of Frank , Dean, Sammy, and Joey. I have a personal h istor y with the R at Pack . The show is an homage to the ta lent and showmanship of these great per formers”.

JL : How does the show at the McCal lum di f fer f rom the La Vegas H i l ton produc t ion?

SH: “Fi rst , we’ve expanded the show into a t wo ac t theatr ica l venture f rom the shor ter cas ino -or iented Las Vegas format used for enter ta inment shows. Then, we add a swinging t welve -piece orchestra for accompaniment, which a l lows for a f ree re in , wide open, per formance f rom the s ix-person cast ”.

JL : Who are your cast members for this M cCal lum stop on your 2012 Broadway and Nat ional Tour?

SH: “Natural ly, they ’re a l l fabulous”…

JL: Natural ly…

SH: “Frank is p layed by David DeCosta , Dean is p layed by Tom Wal lek , Sammy is p layed by Dezmond Meeks, and I p lay Joey Bishop”.

JL : M y notes indicate there are t wo more impor tant cast members. Who are they?

SH: “ I ’m glad you asked that . Yes, there are t wo more key members of the cast . They are

L isa Dawn M i l ler, my ta lented wife, who plays a charac ter ca l led ‘Frank ’s One Love’ who gets to s ing “ Wasn’t I A Good Time?” and our e leven-year o ld son Ol iver R ichman, who por trays young Frank ”.

JL : Your son Ol iver, as I understand i t , i s amazing s inger who has a l ready made an impress ion on the pop music wor ld. Tel l us about him.

SH: “He recorded a song cal led “Defying Gravit y ” f rom the show “ Wicked”, which then went v i ra l on the internet becoming an instant hi t . H is grandfather Don M i l ler (L isa’s father) , the Motown songwrit ing legend, penned a song for h im cal led “One L i t t le Chr istmas Tree”, result ing in an invitat ion by Stevie Wonder for Ol iver to s ing the song on Wonder ’s show in f ront of 7500 people”.

JL : Sounds l ike you now have three stars in your fami ly show business ventures. How of ten, i f ever, do you change the e lements of the show, in order to keep i t f resh?

SH: “ I ad l ib a lot . No, ser iously I update the show ’s songs, and elements a lways ask ing mysel f what do I need to do to make the show more contemporar y. An idea l ike what i f we had the R at Pack per formers come back to l i fe in the 21st Centur y? That might be interest ing. That might work . Af ter a l l , they per formed their ac ts more than s ix t y years ago, yet people st i l l love to watch and hear their unique k ind of humor.

I th ink i t would be fun to hear Sammy s ing, “ Wi l l I s t i l l Be Me”.

JL : I n check ing v ideo c l ips of past shows, I f ind the musical se lec t ions and the orchestrat ions to be just f i rst rate. Who is responsible for that?

SH: “ That would be Chr is Hardin . He’s a wonder ful ly ta lented music ar ranger out of Los Angeles”.

JL : I bel ieve that the audiences of the McCal lum Theatre are in for a real t reat on March 2 and 3 . Sandy, I want to thank you for shar ing your thoughts and t ime with us.

ECES

A great gift for Mom is waiting

to be created in your own kitchen.

The best gifts always include

memorable experiences. Mother’s

Day is the ideal occasion for

spending some quality family time

in the kitchen. Even if cooking isn’t

your forte, the act of preparing a

meal for Mom says far more than

the average greeting card ever

could.

But no matter how good your

intentions, not everyone has the

confidence or experience to plan

and prepare a special meal. For any

chef, the trick to a successful and

scrumptious Mother’s Day brunch

is finding proven recipes and

useful preparation tips that won’t

leave you scrambling for a takeout

menu at the last minute.

One way to simplify Mother’s

Day cooking (and enjoy time spent

with your family while you’re at it)

is by using the America’s Test

Kitchen: Let’s Get Cooking software for the Nintendo DS™ family

of hand-held game systems. This user-friendly software comes

loaded with 300 fool-proof recipes – from appetizers to desserts

– created by the experts at America’s Test Kitchen, each with

complete, easy-to-follow instructions on how to prepare them.

And even if you don’t know a casserole from a quiche, you can

reference the handy Cooking A-Z guide, which offers a glossary

and videos that show tips and techniques. Recipes can be

searched for by a keyword or browsed by photo, difficulty,

cooking time or main ingredient. A voice-recognition feature

also leaves the user hands-free to cook.

Of course, watching a 5-year-old fumble around with cutlery

and hot pans on the stove is no way for a mother to unwind on

her special day. Thankfully, the software can determine a range

of age-appropriate kitchen tasks so everyone in the household

can get involved while giving Mom peace-of-mind.

One of the best ways to enjoy America’s Test Kitchen: Let’s Get

Cooking is with the new Nintendo DSi XL™ system. This latest

portable hardware release from Nintendo features larger screens,

a wider viewing angle and enhanced sound output that are

especially well-suited to instructional activities like cooking.

By gathering the family in the kitchen to create a Mother’s

Day brunch with tasty foods like Ham, Asparagus and Gruyère

Frittata with Lemon-Blueberry Muffins, everyday folks can not

only develop a few impressive cooking skills but also create new

family favorites in the process.

And if Dad tries to butt in for a hand-held golf or auto

racing game, just remind him that Father’s Day is still a few

weeks away.

There is a def in i te correlat ion bet ween f i lm fest ivals and Palm Spr ings. L ike bees

to honey, h igh-powered stars , d i rec tors, wr i ters , p lus Hol ly wood I ndustr y high rol lers , with the k nowledge of successful t rack records of other fest ivals held here – namely the Palm Spr ings I nternat ional Fi lm Fest ival – make Palm Spr ings the number one fest ival dest inat ion to launch a f i lm, or in the present case, a f i rst- ever Amer ican Documentar y Fi lm Fest ival . The fest ival runs f rom March 29th to Apr i l 5th , with a l l t went y-nine screenings tak ing place at the Camelot Theatres (of course, our famous Palm Spr ings weather doesn’t hur t e i ther) .

Ted Grouya, the execut ive direc tor of the Fest ival , i s a mult i - ta lented profess ional wr i ter/direc tor/producer/

c inematographer. I n addit ion to his successful movie industr y career, he is a sav v y f i lmmaker with a v is ion that inc ludes recogniz ing and honor ing the impor tance of the f i lm genre k nown as “ the documentar y ”.

I t should come as no surpr ise to learn that Grouya chose accla imed three -t ime Hol ly wood Academy Award winner Ol iver Stone (an honored documentar y f i lmmaker in his own r ight) to be the recipient of the inaugural “Fi lmmaker Who M akes a Di f ference Award” f rom the Amer ican Documentar y Fi lm Fest ival . Stone is cer ta inly in the forefront , i f not the leader, of projec ts and f i lms that have ra ised our awareness of controvers ia l subjec ts over the years, that other wise would not be on the countr y ’s “radar screens”.

At the Fr iday, March 29th opening night ceremonies and G ala held at the Camelot Theatres, Stone attended with his son Sean (a lso a f i lmmaker) , and his n inet y- one year o ld mother Jacquel ine. The f i lm selec ted

by Grouya to k ick- off of the fest ival i s “Commandante”, the documentar y-st y led f i lm Ol iver Stone made with Fidel Castro as i ts sole subjec t . I t was never intended, according to Stone, to present Castro, a l ightening rod of controversy with many Cuban-Amer icans l iv ing in south Flor ida , in any par t icular l ight . Stone has a lways maintained his f i lm is not journal ist ica l ly dr iven, but merely a f i lmed por tra i t of the Cuban dic tator.

The movie is a fasc inat ing look into the publ ic and pr ivate man that i s Fidel Castro. Cr i t ics of Stone’s documentar y have c la imed that h is f i lmed coverage of Castro in the movie, casts the dic tator in a favorable l ight , becoming sor t of a propaganda vehic le for Cuba. Stone, in the role of a documentar y f i lmmaker, takes exist ing histor ical footage and archived news-reel footage, and blends them together with modern day footage he shot in Cuba over a three day per iod in 2003, producing an interest ing por tra i t of one of h istor y ’s famous

dic tators in the process. The new footage, shot by Stone and his crew, produced over thi r t y hours of f i lm that eventual ly was edited down by Stone to a manageable 99 minute running t ime.

I n the Q & A sess ion fol lowing the movie, Grouya and Stone took quest ions f rom the audience. Most quest ioners were interested in learning about what sor t of person Castro was when the cameras weren’t running. Stone obl iged with anecdotes about his three day shoot with Castro ; informing the audience about Castro’s ground rules concerning the subjec ts to be discussed

and when to stop f i lming. The bottom-l ine answer was that there weren’t any rules f rom Castro or anyone else. I t was a f ree wheel ing c inematic exper ience f rom beginning to end. Castro, who doesn’t speak Engl ish , has to re ly on his t ranslator of th i r t y years to respond to quest ions f rom Stone. Their exchanges were f r iendly, l ight in tone, and f rank and i l luminat ing, as far as anyone can te l l .

“Comandante” was Stone’s f i rst f i lm about Castro. He has t wo addit ional documentar ies in this fest ival ; one more with Fidel Castro as a subjec t ent i t led “Look ing For Castro”, made in 2004, and “South of the Border ”

made in 2009 where he inter v iews seven South Amer ican e lec ted pres idents and examines what has been tak ing place in highly volat i le and pol i t ica l ly sensit ive South Amer ica .

The Amer ican Documentar y Fi lm Fest ival i s loaded with qual i t y doco’s , which range f rom compel l ing socia l i ssues to Hol ly wood personal i t ies l ike Dol ly Par ton to spor t ing competit ions for aging seniors, and much more. I f you l ike documentar ies, then this i s the fest ival for you.
