Notes for Daniel Lewis Donaho:Lewis Donaho and his wife left Louisiana and settled in Jasper county Texas in 1831. They remained in Jasper and Newton Counties where14 children were born between 1831 and 1859. Records indicate that Lewis received several large Mexican Land grants in Jasper countywhere he was a settler before the Texas revolution of 1836. Family tradition says they took part in the Run-a way scrap in 1836. Records doshow he was an early Texas ranger in1837. Later records show him to be a commissioner of Newton County and at one time owned asawmill there. They left Newton County in the summer of 1860 and moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana. How long they were in Louisiana idunknown but the sons were back in Texas to enlist for the civil war in 1861. Lewis Donaho moved his family to Madison County in 1864.After his Death, Julia ann Lewis and her children moved to Marcelena in Wilson County. She died at the home of her daughter LindaVasbinder in March 1890 at Elmendorf, Bexar County, Texas and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Marcelena Cemetery. This would have made his wife only 12 if they married before he went to California, haven'tconfirmed yet but think more likely they were married in California.

Dec. 28, 1971 by Patricia Ann Kyte Martin RachInterview with Grannie Grannie was born on Jan. 1, 1882on the outskirts on Newton in a log cabin where she lived until she was 12 years old. Her mother, Mary

Jane Matthews King died when she was seven. Grannie helped raise her two brothers, Dock and Kamp King while her father William MartinKing worked at logging and farming jobs.She did all the cooking and housework atthis early age. Her house was not the push button type either. She cooked on a fireplace, washed clothes in a square can. She boiled thewater which was “toated” from the river by the saw mill and washed them with a rub board or just beat them with a paddle. She starched theclothes and then ironed them with a wood iron. Grannie went to school in a log cabin up to the third grade. She taught herself how to write at home. Grannie pieced her first quilt with help from some of her friends at the age of 12. Last year, at the age of 89, she pieced by hand 16 quilttops for different members of her family. These are cherished gifts that the family will love and enjoy for many years. She and Paw, Acie Marian Lewis, were married on Oct. 24, 1900, near Bon Weir, Texas. They raised eight children: Willie Lewis of SanAugustine, Texas, Murl Lewis from Hemphill , Texas (deceased), Nina Love of Denver, Colorado, Ola Inman of Orange, Texas,Doris Cooper of Fort Worth, Texas, Prentice Lewis of Houston, Texas, Authur Lewis of Silsbee and Cecil Lewis from Orange, Texas(deceased). Grannie and Paw lived in Sabine County 13 years where they farmed several different pieces of land. They moved to Orange duringWorld War II and the then moved back to Sabine Co. toward Yellow Pine. Paw worked for the Kirby Lumber Company in Call, Texas.They again moved back to Orange where Paw worked for the Shipyard. Paw was born in 1876 in Newton Co. He died on March 2, 1955 at the age of 79. CHIRP is the word to describe this tiny 84-year-young lady. She is dedicated to the life of Godliness and hassunshine in her heart. The following story was related to Woodrow and Minnie Alice (Wilson) McMillan byMrs. Leona (Herrin) Simmons in July 1985.

She is the daughter of Jim and Sallie (Cochran) Herrin. She was born in Fawil Community, June 27, 1901. Atabout the age of eight, her parents moved to Bleakwood and lived with her grandparents Bob and Mary(Whitman) Herrin. Mr. Bob had purchased the watermill, cotton gin and grist mill from Mr. Jess Lee onThickety Creek.

Mr. Jim Herrin then built a home near his father. Near this home stood the first Bleakwood schoolhouse, but itwas not used as a school anymore then. Leona's older brother, Henry, and she would tromp cotton in the pressto help her grandfather make a bale. They thought of this work as fun. Three other children were born to thefamily while living at Bleakwood - they were Alma, Hoy, and Arbell. They all swam in the Thickety Creekswimming hole, too.

She first attended the Bleakwood school, that would now be on Highway 87, about one half mile south of theSante Fe Railroad. Leona relates that her mother attended school in Belgrade. Leona's later schooling was atLewis Chapel because Miss Acie Marshall boarded at their house and taught school there. Mr. Jim Herrinbought a buggy and a small mule for them to drive the three miles each way every day. Miss Acie marriedAddison Simmons.

As a young girl, Leona attended singing schools in Bleakwood. Mr. Jim Morgan who taught at BleakwoodSchool, would also teach singing schools. Mr. Morgan was known also to start school each day with the

morning prayer. He later married Loraine Sellers of Fawil. Mr. Sanford also held singing schools inBleakwood at Watson's Chapel.

Mr. Bob Herrin sold his mill to a Mr. Clifton. Then Mr. Jim Herrin built another new house closer to the newBleakwood, where he worked in a sawmill of George Whitman.

Coming to Newton as a bride of John David Simmons in 1917, she saw the city grow. She lived one year inBurkeville and one year in Kirbyville and the rest in Newton. She and her husband organized the FirstPentecostal Church in Newton, and she still attends regularly. They first organized this in their home and thenhad Arbor Meetings. Mr. Harrison Hall donated some land for the church. They began by putting planks onblocks in front of Tom Hext's place. From this a building came forth and then another, the one now in use.Mrs. Simmons herself has pastored this church and several others in nearby communities. She has conductedseveral funerals but never had a license to perform weddings. She misses ministering to the churches but isnow too weak to do so.

She and her husband farmed a lot for other people on share crop arrangement. Cotton played a main role. Shecould outpick her husband by picking 100 pounds of seed cotton per day. Her husband was a native ofNewton.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Herrin had the following children: Jim, Randall, Lee, Mark, Alonzo and one daughter -Clara. Most of Leona's folks are buried in the Bob Herrin Cemetery in Fawil. Her mother's folks are in theWilson-Cochran Cemetery in Belgrade. She is alone now, having lost her husband and three sons. One sonwas killed in a car wreck, another was kidnapped and murdered while working at a Beaumont service station,and one served in the War. He was not killed in that war but is buried in England. She has her grandchildren,some great grandchildren and her daughters-in-law. She reads a lot and if her sewing machine was not broken,she would be sewing.
