In a letter written by Florence H. Savage to Mr. Hughes of the Wahkiakum County Historical Society from Seattle
on August 14, 1969 regarding donation of items from the Samuel Everhart Barr she states her mother's notes,
"which says in part: Samuel Everhart Barr was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. There he married his first
cousin, Margaret Waterman Barr, and for this they were expelled from their church congregation. They moved to
Van Buren County, Iowa. They had 8 children, of whom 4 lived; 3 girls and 1 boy. The mother died."
Samuel Barr left Iowa by oxen team in the Spring of 1852. Arrived in Portland by the Fall after 7 years he returned
Iowa, sold all his belongings and brought his wife Margaret, son Thaddeus, daughter Zerilda and three or 4 children
from a former marriage and went to New York, boarded the "Moses Taylor" and after three months by way of the
Isthmus of Panama and then by train and then the "Sonara" to San Francisco in six weeks. They reached Portland
in 1859. Stayed in Portland until Spring 1871, a year at Knappton and to Grays River in 1872, settling on the
Dungan place. Samuel Barr was Justice of Peace at Grays River and Deep River. Olive Barr Mathison Malone is
the daughter of Thad and Phoebe. In 1872 Jessie Mitchell Barr was born, died March 1, 1969. Married to George

History of Grays River Begins in '68
By Cora C. Venable
The Grays River valley, winding through the hills of the lower Columbia area, has a history that begins in 1868
when the family of Sam Walker settled in this area.
Captain William Raefield also came that year, and was followed in '69 by Absolom Majors and George Burchards,
and in '72 by the Sam Barrs. These people all played important roles in the community, not only in pioneering, but
in after years when Walker had one of the first stores here, sold in '96 to W. N. Meserve.
In those days oxen were brought in for logging. Just a few months ago an oxen yoke was found in the hills by Ervy
Holden, a veteran woodsman.
All transportation in those days was by boat. Astoria was the trading center.
Fishing always was a lure to those who had homesteaded. There are still a number of fishermen in this territory,
especially in the Seal river district, although the main livehood is farming. On one of the farms, owned by Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Badger, and shared with the R. K. Ordway family, a herd of 58 cows is being milked night and morning.
Todays Grays River has a consolidated school for children from the Deep River, Rosburg, Eden, Altoona and Grays
River districts. The school was completed last year at a cost of $52,181.
The Lower Columbia Dairy association takes care of the farmers' milk production, with the manufacture of butter,
cheese and powdered milk products. The output last year totaled 719,670 pounds of powdered milk and 506,266
pounds of butter. The creamery received from the farmers of this district a total of 8,683,607 pounds of milk.
The town of Grays River supports two general stores, a creamery, a post office, a telephone exchange, a Methodist
church and a tavern, while Rosburg has a store and post office, and two churches, a Finnish Apostolic and a Seventh
Day Adventist.
A Chronicle of the Early Days of Knappton (Pacific County) Washington
By Carlton E. Appelo, Deep River, Washington July 1964
...Another newcome, a Civil War veteran, born and raised in Keatsville, Missouri, became part of this story in 1869.
He was James Vaugh, who, at the outbreak of hostilities enlinsted in the Union Army with the Indiana Volunteers.
He had already been married a year to a farmer's daughter, Mary Elizabeth Knapp, from Ohio. She was a trained
nurse and consequently, volunteered her services during the war period where ever they were stationed. They were
quite surprised to be sent West for service at Fort Canby. They took to this country and Vaughn elected to remain
here when he was mustered out following the War. When fishing was not good at Old Chinook (Point Ellice), he
worked in the lime quarry at Cementville for the Knapps (they were not kin folks of Mrs. Vaughn although their
names were the same). A little cluster of houses had been built for the cement plant workers near the crude kiln.
Also there was quite a lot of hand logging going on around the vicinity. It was natural that the idea of erecting a
saw mill soon occured to the Knapps. They hired Jim Vaughn to clear ground at the mill site and soon a new local
industry was born. He was assisted by a Pennsylvania born craftsman named Samuel Everhart Barr (granddad to
DeWitt Barr of Grays River) who had migrated to Oregon from Iowa in 1852 and who had brought his family to
Portland in 1859. The two families lived in one house having a board across the house to seperate the respective
children. They naturally squabbled and played as all children do. This board became the insurrmountable barrier
which they learned to respect as the boundry line. However the mill was built by Vaughn and Barr and the Knapps
started buying logs...

DEATH OF EARLY GRAYS RIVER RESIDENT BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF PAST.
By Florence Savage
Jessie Mitchell Barr Hopkins, who was the third white child born at Grays River, died in a Convalescent home
near Seattle, on March 1, 1969. She was the seventh and youngest child of Samuel E. and Margaret Jane Waterman
Barr, who came to Washington Territory about 1870.
Samuel E. Barr, born in Pennsylvania, was married to his first wife there, but moved to Iowa in the late 1830s.
They had five living children when his wife died in 1847. He was married to Margaret Jane Waterman in 1849, in
Van Buren County, Iowa. In 1852, leaving Margaret Jane with their two infant children, Thaddeus and Zeralda,
and the children of the first wife, Samuel traveled to Portland with a wagon train, and remained there for seven
years.
In 1859, he returned to Iowa, where he "sold" various members of the Waterman family on the West. Among
those who left were Margaret Jane and her two children and three of the children of Samuel E. and his first wife;
Margaret Jane's father and second wife, who are buried at Walla Walla; and the families of several of her sisters.
They traveled from Iowa to New York, where they took a boat for the Isthmus of Panama, crossed the Isthmus by
tram, thence to Portland by boat. The Watermans all went on to Walla Walla, but the Barrs remained in Portland
for about 10 years. Samuel E. was a carpenter and a cabinet maker. During these years in Portland, Margaret Jane
gave birth to four more children: Emma, Effie, William and Frank. About 1870, the family removed to Knappton,
where they remained only a short time. While they were there, the oldest daughter, Zeralda (born in Iowa), was
married and went to Portland, where she remained the rest of her life.
At this time, Samuel E. Barr and the oldest son, Thaddeus, filed homestead claims on Grays River and the family
moved, Samuel E. was given the position of Collector of Customs at Shoalwater Bay (Oyster Bay) which position
he held until shortly before his death, while Margaret Jane and the children held down the homestead claims on
Grays River. The first home was built on the spot of land now belonging to De Witt and Miss Louise Barr. Here
Jessie Mitchell Barr was born on November 6, 1872. The name Mitchell was given her for the intimate personal
friend of Samuel E. Barr, John Mitchell, who was Senator of the U. S. Congress from Oregon Territory, and who
recommended Samuel E. for the position at Shoalwater Bay.
In such early pioneer times, Jessie was very fortunate. Upon the insistence of members of her family, she lived in
Astoria two consecutive winters, where she worked as a mother's helper for her room and board and went to school.
In 1890, the family sent her to Olympia to attend Olympia Collegiate Institute, a very good school, supported by the
Methodist church. She attended O. C. I. for two years. There she met her future husband, George S. Hopkins, and
they were married in 1892, in the original family home on Grays River. (That house burned shortly afterward, and
was replaced by the one now standing.)
The Hopkinses lived in Olympia from 1892 till 1906, in Rosburg till 1917, in Carbonado till 1956. In 1956, they
moved to Seattle, where Mr. Hopkins died in November, 1956. Mrs. Hopkins lived for a time with her daughter,
then with her son until shortly before his death in 1968.
Mrs. Hopkins outlived all of her brothers and sisters, her husband and three of her children. She leaves a
daughter, Mrs. Anthony Savage, of Seattle, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren in or near Seattle. In
addition are the descendants of her brothers and sisters, all of whom, with the exception of Zeralda, the eldest sister,
lived at one time on Grays River. The original claim of Thaddeus Barr is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Elgin
Gollersrud, the original claim of Samuel E. and Margaret Jane Barr by De Witt and Miss Louise Barr. Mrs. Ruth
McAllister is a niece of Mrs. Hopkins, and Mrs. James Lindros and Mrs. Ed (Jean) Gollersrud) Olson, Eden Valley,
are grandnieces.
Mrs. Hopkins was a member of Chapter BB, P. E. O., of Seattle, and of Iris Chapter, Eastern Star, of South
Prairie, and was Worthy Matron in 1929.
Samuel E. Barr was buried on the hill above the original home. Other members of the family are buried in the
Grays River cemetery: Margaret Jane Waterman Barr, Emma Barr, Effie Barr Seeley, Thaddeus S. Barr and William
L. Barr, and wives and husbands, sons and daughters of this pioneer family.
