Notes for James Nowlin:After losing all his land (during the Irish Rebellion), James indentured himself to an Englishman by the name of Ward to gain passage to the United States. The ship sailed around 1700 and is said to have docked in Jamestown, Virginia. After arriving in the US, James changed the spelling of his name to 'Nowlin'. James was sold as an indentured servant to a man by the name of Ward. James married his daughter. Became known as James Nowlin of Virginia.

Notes for Robert E. Nowlin:Was a very sucessful farmer. He also sold patent medicine. He retired from farming and went into real estate. He later moved to Lakeland, FL. He was a Baptist and helped start two Baptist churches in Lakeland, FL. In Martin, TN where he was born his church started Hall Moody Institute. His daughter Nelle Nowlin graduated in 1906 with a Bachelor's Degree from Hall Moody and then moved to Lyons, GA and taught "Expression" at Lyons High School. She married Samuel Jordan Brown. Their children were Nilwon Brown, Robert Brown, Sr., Jack Brown, David Brown, and Bill Brown. Hall Moody grew to be a Junior College and ultimately became the University of Tennessee at Martin. Several of R. E. Nowlins's descendants attened the 100th anniversary of UT Martin. Those included were Bill Brown, Patsy Jackson, Walter Brown, Robert Brown, and Ray Brown. In 2015 UT Martin had more than 6,800 students representing 40 states and 19 countries, with 94% in undergraduate programs and 6% pursing graduate degrees.
