The earliest recorded ancestor of this family named in the Heralds Visitations married tempore Richard II. AgnesBurguillon, niece and heir of Alice, wife of Malculin de la Mare, who died 28 June 1440, seized of a part of theManor of Kidderminster, Co., Worcester; and at the Inquistion taken on her death atWorcester 6 November, 1400, the jury returned that "Agnes, wife of Jno Bysshop is the kinswoman and heir ofthe said Alice, namely daughter of Robert, brother of the aforesaid, Alice & is of age 44 yrs & more. Inquistion: Agnes, wife of John Bysshop, Esquire. The Inquistion Post Mortem on the death of Alice, the wife of Malculum de la Mare, who died seized of a partof Kidderminster Manor in Worcestershire, was taken at Worcester on the Saturday nearest after the Feast of AllSaints, in 2 Henry IV. (viz., on November 6, 1400). The Jury stated that the saidsecond part of Kidderminster Manor and the other two parts were held of the King in chief, and the worth of thesaid second part in its issues was L10 per annum. They also stated that the aforesaid Alice died on the Mondaynearest after the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last past (viz, June28, 1400), and that Agnes, wife of John Bysshop, is kinswoman and heir of the aforesaid Alice, namely, daughterof Robert, brother of aforesaid Alice, and is of age of forty years and more. [Inquis. Post Mortem, 2 Henry IV,No. 43] This Alice was sister of Robert Burguillon, who is mentioned as one of the trustees of the property in asettlement of it made in the reign of Richard II. There was also another Inquistion taken at Shrewsbury before William Banastre, the King's Escheater for theCounty of Salop, on 18 November, 1400; in which the Jury say upon their oaths that Alice, who was the wife ofMalculin de la Mare, (Presented to the Vicarage of Kidderminster in 1391 andagain in 1395), held no lands or tenements in her demesne or in service as of the fee of the Lord King in chief inthe county aforesaid on the day which the same Alice died, and who is her nearest heir, or the age of her heir, theyknow not. Richard Bisshop or Bishopp, The following entry appears in the journals of the House of the Commons under thedate Die Martis 1 Decembris, 1646:--"Resolved, that this House doth nominate and appoint Richard Bishopp,Esquire, to be Sheriff of thecounty of Southampton, and that the commissioners of the Great Seal of England do issue a commission to him tobe Sheriff of the said county accordingly;" and in the journals of the House of Lords "Die Jovis 3 Decembris,1646. The second paster of the First Congregational Church of Stamford, Connecticutand served 50 years from 1644 to 1694. He first arrived in the New World in1640 in Taunton, Massachusetts. Soon after arriving in Stamford, Connecticuthe married Rebecca Goodyear and they had 10 children. Four of which died ininfancy.

On May 3, 1610, John Bishop was baptised at the Anglican Church of SaintsPeter and Paul in Cattistock, Dorchester, Co., Dorsetshire, England. His parents were William and Alice(Dunning) Bishop. There home was the ancient manors of "Holway" about a mile north of the village where thechurch and school are located. Theabove appears in "The History and Antiquities of the County of Dorsetshire" by Hutchins. Volume IV. Otherfarms in the same area, owned by members of the BISHOP family were "In-Park," "West Holway," "LowerHolway," "Metford," "North Chalmington,""Chalmington," "Chalmington," and possibly others. Assumed by Royal license, 25 May, 1782, the additional name of Bendysh, having suceeded to a life interestin the Bendysh Estates in the Counties of Essex, Cambridge and Huntingdon, under the will of Mrs. SarahPyke, daughter of Sir John Bendysh,Baronet, of Bower Hall, Co. Essex.** The Bendyshes were an ancient Essex family. Thomas Bendysh, who died in 1342, purchased the propertyat Steeple Bumpstead, now known as the Bower Hall Estate. Thomas Bendysh, of Steeple Bumpstead,Esquire, was created a Baronet in 1611, and SirHenry Bendysh, his great-grandson, dying without issue 4 September, 1717, the baronetcy became extinct andthe family estates devolved upon his sister, Sarah Bendysh (sole surviving daughter of Sir John Bendysh,Baronet), who married John Crouch Pyke,of Bathorne Hall, Essex, Esquire. Mr. Pyke died 3 December, 1738, and his widow, who died in 1752, by herwill, dated 1 September, 1751, bequeathed the Bendysh Estates to Sir Stephen Anderson, Baronet, and hisissue; and in default of issue to JohnAnsell, Esquire, for life; and then to Mary Gosling, and in default of issue to William Bishop, Frensham,Surrey, Esquire for life, and to his son William Bishop, with remainder to Henry Bendysh, of GreatYarmouth, Norfolk, Esquire; and in default ofissue, to her right heirs forever; all of whom were to take the name of Bendysh with the estates, except SirStephen Anderson. All of the above named devisees having died issueless, the property passed to Mrs.Stevens, as right heir of the testatrix,and a descendant of Lady Dawes, daughter of Sir Thomas Bendysh, the second Baronet. The estates devolvedupon William Bishop, Esquire, of Frensham, in 1782 (his father being the dead), who thereupon assumed theadditional name of Bendysh as directedby the testatrix.Mr. Bishop-Bendysh died without issue, having disposed of the Manors of Holway and In-Park, and also ofthe Great Tithes of Seal, Frensham, Elsted and Bentley, in his lifetime, and was succeeded in the other estateby his brother, Henry.
