Ballou, Volney James (deceased). The subject of this sketch, whose portrait appears in this work, was born in Saratoga county, New York, May 20, 1827. Here he attended the common schools. In1839 his parents emigrated to Cuyahoga county, Ohio, where Volney finished his education, afterwhich he sailed around the world, and was absent form port thirty three months, on a whalingvoyage. During the California gold excitement in 1849, he returned to Ohio, and being possessedof more than an ordinary advanturous spirit, and enured to the hardships incident to a roving life,he at once emigrated to this State and commenced mining in El Dorado county, continuing in thispursuit until the Fall of 1853, at which time he settled in Santa Rosa valley, on the farm where hedied. In 1864, he returned to the East, enlisting in the Subsistence Department, and was detailedas clerk in the commissary depot at Johnsonville, Tennessee, serving in this capacity for ninemonths, when he was honorably discharged, returning to Du Page county, Illinois. On March 29,1867, he married at Naperville, in that county, Mrs. Michael Leonard, whose maiden name wasRosia A Mayer. She was born in Northampton county, Pennsylvania, November 2, 1839.Immediately after their marriage, they returned to this State. During his long residence in thiscounty -- from 1853 to the time of his death on June 4, 1877 -- it can be truthfully said of Mr.Ballou that he was an honorable, upright gentleman. Starting out in life as he did, fro himselfwhen quite young, he has achieved all his successes single-handed, and in the presence of

obstacles which only the most indomitable energy and courage could have surmounted, has givenhim an honorable position among his fellow Men.

Notes for SYLVESTER ALLEN BALLOU:

SYLVESTER ALLEN BALLOU FAMILY

Sylvester A. Ballou was a direct descendant of Maturin Ballou, one of the founders of RhodeIsland. He was born in Galway N.Y. in 1828. His father, Isaac Albee Ballou, and family moved toBreckenridge, Ohio, in 1832 where he was a farmer and maker of shoes. "Ves," as Sylvester wascalled, taught school from 1848-9, when he and his brother Volney, sailed around Cape Horn totry their luck in the gold fields, where they arrived in August, 1850.

The brothers walked to Cold Springs, El Dorado Country, "a teeming hive of gold seekers",where Ves became a leading citizen. He founded a Lyceum and the first public library inCalifornia in 1853. That year he was elected to the State Assembly in Benicia and made chairmanof a committee to investigate sites for a permanent capitol. Ballou’s 7-page documentrecommending Sacramento, as well as many bills he sponsored, are in the California Archives.

In the summer of 1854 he returned to Naperville where his father had purchased a farm, south ofthe second bridge along the DuPage River In the spring of 1855 he and his brother Orlandoreturned to California, living near Quincy where they prospected along the Feather River andpacked supplies to the miners’ camps. He was the first teacher in the Pioneer school there, now aCalifornia landmark.

In 1858 Ballou was elected to the Assembly again. Newspapers praised him as a hard-workingand principled legislator, a capable committee chairman, an effective orator and the bestparliamentarian in the house. He was famous for his unflinching stand on the question ofstatehood for Kansas, emphasizing popular sovereignty rather than his anti-slavery convictions.

In 1859 Ballou was elected to the Senate from Butte and Plumas Counties. His speeches, significant for their intelligent and moral reasoning and also popular for their witty and ironiccast, were often printed on the front pages of the Sacramento and San Francisco papers.

When the legislature was over in 1860, Ballou, convinced that war was imminent, returned toNaperville. He joined the Union Army, became a. major serving in Missouri, Georgia andTennessee, and won praise as being "not only wise, active and efficient, but thoroughly honest."

In June 1865 he married 20-year-old Julia Barnard and they returned to San Francisco to fulfillhis appointment as Chief Commissary Officer of the Army, Department of California. They cameback to Naperville in 1866 and their son, Ray, was born the following year. Julia died ofpneumonia in 1869.

In 1871 he rented his farm and went to Indian Territory where he engaged in building theMissouri, Kansas and Texas railroad. In 1873 he returned to California by train (5½ days) and

wrote articles for the Naperville Clarion on the great changes in that country. In 1874 his father,Isaac Albee, went to live with his brother; Volney in Santa Rosa, California.

Ves proposed to Eliza Norton in a 6-stanza poem. She was the daughter of Mary and MichaelNorton of Irish decent, a beautiful 26-year-old school teacher in the Ellsworth School, with alively personality. They were married on Jan. 12, 1875. The only time they were separated duringtheir 24 years was when Ves joined the silver rush to Leadville, Colorado, in 1879, anunsuccessful mining venture. They had 4 children, Ralph, Mary Eloise (May) and the twins, Aliceand Edith. May married Bernard C. Beckman Oct 24, 1900. Their 3 daughters were Bernice (Mrs.Stuart S. Ball), Eleanor (Mrs. Albert R. Martin) and Sylvia (Mrs. Robert Warner).

Ves enlarged the home he had built for Julia into a fine house, still standing, surrounded bynumerous tall condominiums. He bought a second farm adjoining his to the north, running up theroad of the second bridge. (The children attended the little red school house that stood across theriver to the north.) He found many arrowheads when turning over those fields for the first time. The tenant farmer lived on this farm and there were hired hands when extra help was needed. Hekept a journal noting the weather and planting of crops.

The Ballou family had a merry life with games, spelling bees, and constant reading. There was apleasant social life between the Ballous and other gentlemen farmers south of town, the Greens, the Barnards and the Royces. They moved to Naperville about 1890, the corner of Brainard andHighland Ave.

The Martin Mitchell Museum has the canvas covered truck that Ballou took around Cape Horn, his tall silk hat that he wore to the legislature in California, and the field desk that accompaniedhim throughout the Civil War

Notes for ORLANDO RALPH BALLOU:

The Ballous in America, Pub. by Ballou Family Assoc of America, Boston, Mass, Sept 1937 pg16

He took his bride to Lisle Township, Ill., then to Naperville, Ill. In 1872 the family moved toSanta Rosa, Calif., where their seventh child was born. Then the family moved to San Francisco,Calif., from which plac, in 1878, they first went to Portland, ORe., then by boat to Wallula, thence to Walla Walla, and finally settled on what is now the old homestead, "Brooklands". Fromletter of Florence(Ballou) Brown, Spokane, 1032; "Oour original farm was called 'Birch Brook',where I was born in 1880. Father bought it in 1878 and moved the family up from California. Then he found the title was not quite clear and had to use his homestead rights to prove up on it.He bought more land until he had 388 acres of the best land in Walla Walla Valley, containingfour streams and fifty-two springs. In 1889 he sold 'Birch Brook Farm' and 80 acres, and movedto another house on the place, which we called 'Crystal Springs Farm'. There he had a large dairy,20 acres of pears, and an apple orchard. He sold baled timothy hay to the goverment for cavalry

horses. In 1899 he sold this place and a hundred acres and built 'Brooklands'. I was married herein 1903."

Notes for MYRA J. BALLOU:

The Ballous in America, Pub. by Ballou Family Assoc of America, Boston, Mass, Sept 1937

Miss Ballou has been one of the enthusiastic memebers of the Ballou Family Association, and hasaccumlated a great deal of historical and genealogical date pertaining to this interestingpioneering branch of the Ballou family, and to her efforts we are indebted for many memberships.

It is a pleasure to quote from an article (1917) from The Farmers Union News, Corvallis, BentonCo., Ore.: "When speaking of faithful officers, Miss Myra Ballou, Umatilla County Secretary, must not be overlooked. For four years, as Secretary of her County, she never missed a meeting. She has always been awake to all public questions, especially those pertaining to farm life, andcan be depended upon to eneter into any work that will benefit the farmers, with a will. She is nocity farmer, but lives with her mother on her farm 'Brooklands', (rightly named), some three milesnorth of Freewater, Oregon. She personally looks after the management of her farm withwonderful accuracy and procision. She is able to give many men valuable pointers on grains, grasses, and fruits, all of which she raises on her farm. She keeps a register and requests everyvisitor to sign, and can show the names of thousands of persons who have had the pleasure ofvisiting 'Brooklands'. Miss Ballou has frequently been mentioned as a possible candidate for thelegislature, but so far has persistently refused to enter politics."

She has been a delegate to many conventions; National Irrigation Congress at Spokane, Wash..;Country Life Congress; American Forestry Assn. of which she was a member, and many others. She was an ardent club woman, a member of WallaWalla Art Club. She had no churchaffiliations, but a sincere home spiritualist, as were her mother and father for fifty years. Shebequeathed her share of 'Brooklands' to her sister Florence (Ballou) Brown.

CLARENCE O. BALLOU

Clarence O. Ballou, well known in the commercial circles of Boise as the president of the Ballou-Latimer Company, Limited, owners of a large retail drug store at the corner of Ninth and Idahostreets, was born on a farm in Cook county, Illinois, just west of Chicago, January 18, 1866, hisparents being Orlando R. and Elizabeth (Boyd) Ballou. The father, traced his ancestry back to onewho came to America with Roger Williams. Orlando R Ballou was born in Cuyahoga county,Ohio, December 19, 1833, and died in 1910 at the age of seventy-seven years. Throughout hisactive business career he followed the occupation of farming and although he was not physicallyfit for active fighting service in the Civil war he did valuable work for the country as a master oftransportation in the Union army. Three of his brothers were on the firing line, one of these beingMajor Sylvester Ballou. Mrs. Elizabeth Ballou still survives her husband and now resides with adaughter in Umatilla county, Oregon.

Clarnce O. Ballou is the only member of the family residing in Idaho. At the age of six years, orin 1872, he accompanied his parents to Sonoma county, California, and in 1878 a removal wasmade to Umatilla county, Oregon, where the father spent his remaining days. The son passed hisyouth there and acquired a public school education in California and Oregon, while later hecontinued his studies at Whitman College of Walla Walla, Washington. When seventeen years ofage he began learning the drug business in a store in Walla Walla and has since followed thatpursuit, covering a period of about thirty-six years. He remained with the same firm in WallaWalla for thirteen years, or from 1883 until 1896, a fact indicative of his thorough reliability aswell as capability. In the latter year, however, he came to Boise and for four years continued toact as a drug clerk in the store of Northrup & Joy, thus spending seventeen years with two houses. On the 18th of March, 1901, he joined with the late James B Latimer in the purchase of the stockof drugs formerly owned by W. S. Galbraith on Eighth street in the old Odd Fellows building. The two men then organized and incorporated what became known as the Ballou-LatimerCompany, Limited, of which Mr. Ballou has since been the president. Mr. Latimer became thevice president and so continued up to the time of his death in 1911, while W. H. Puckett was thesecretary and treasurer, remaining as such until his death a few years ago. Mrs James B. Latimeris now vice president, while Mrs. Teressa Puckett is the secretary and treasurer. On the 1st ofJanuary, 1913, the Ballou-Latimer Company removed their drug store to the present quarters inthe McCarty building at the corner of Ninth and Idaho streets and today they have one of the bestestablishments of the kind not only in Boise but throughout Idaho. Mr. Ballou is thoroughlyfamiliar with every phase of the business and with every detail as well as its principle featuresand at all times has been actuated by a progressive spirit in the conduct of his interests. He hasserved as president of the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy for nine years, having been firstappointed by Governor Gooding and reappointed by Governor James H. Hawley.

On the 6th of October, 1917, Mr. Ballou was married to Miss Mary C. Baillie of DenverColorado. In politics he has always been a stalwart champion of republican principles but neveran office seeker. He is the past noble grand of the local lodge of Odd Fellows, is a member of theBenevolent Protective Order of Elks and also of the Boise Commercial Club. Alert and energetic,he has readily recognized his opportunities, which he has utilized to good advantage, and alongwith the legitimate lines of trade he has reached his present creditable and enviable postion in thecommercial circles of Idaho's capital.

Notes for SAMUEL MATHER:

Historical encyclopedia of Illinois, and History of Du Page County, Munsell PublishingCompany, Chicago, 1913 page 952a

Mather, Samuel. The question of supply and demand has been further complicated during recentyears by the requirements of pure food laws, which necessitate the production of articles ofconsumption according to rules proviced for in the various acts passed. Some of the mostaggressive business men of Du Page County have found it to their advantage to embark inenterprises having for their object the manufacture of wholesome food products, which becauseof their purity command good prices in any market. One of these men is Samuel Mather secretaryand treasurer of the Naperville Co-operative Co., manufacturers of high grade butter and cheese. He was born March 7, 1847, at Whallonsburgh, Essex County, N. Y., being a son of Joshua E.and Maria (Frisbee) Mather. Joshua E. Mather wasz a mechanic who at one time was engaged inmanufacturing iron articles. He came to Illinois in 1852, becoming a farmer, and dying upon hisproperty in 1880. His wife survived him until 1891. They 3were farming people all their lives.

From 1864 to 1865, Mr. Mather attended the Naperville Academy, then returning to the farm, conducted it until 1873. He then had some experience as a ranchman in California from 1873 to1880. In 1883, he came to Du Page County from Will County, locating in Lisle Township. In1888, with William King and J.P. Rickert, he organized the Naperville Co-operative Co., withhimself as secretary and treasurer. The creamery has a capacity of from 2,700 to 30,000 poundsof milk per day, according to the supply. The business has steadily advanced, and the product iskept up to a high standard of excellence.

Mr. Mather was married November 21, 1866, at Lisle, Ill., to Malvina Ballow. The children bornof this marriage werer: Glen E., deceased; Zillia A., deceased; Roy a., Fred E., Roscoe, deceased, and Ethel M. Roy and Fred were educated at Champain, Ill., the latter being with the St. PaulRailroad as civil engineer, while the former is with the American Bridge Co. at Ambridge, Penn.Zillia died when twenty-two years old, after graduating from the Northwestern College atNaperville. Ethel married Dean D. Gross, and her husband is a merchant of Yankton, S.D.;Daniel, their son, is ex-postmaster of this place.

Mr. Mather has always been active in Republican party matters, serving as Alderman from theThird Ward of Naperville during 1907, 1908 and 1909, and in 1910, he was elected Mayor.During his administration, the people enjoyed a businesslike administration, and a number ofimprovements were inaugurated and carried out. He is a Past Master of Euclid Lodge, No. 65,A.F. & A. M., and Past High Priest of Euclid Chapter, No. 13, R. A. M. While not affiliated withany religious denomination, he believes in the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man.Mr. Mather was Postmaster here for six years, filling a part of this time as assistant.
