The field of dermatopathology can be overwhelming unlike any other part of pathology because of the sheer number of different skin diseases. There are hundreds of different skin entities, many of which have multiple variants.

The goal of this book was to help dermatologists and pathologists master the field of dermatopathology through a visual approach. The majority of dermatologists and pathologists, including myself, have a visual learning style and value a good image over a thousand words. Being able to notice visual details and tuning in to similarities and differences makes an expert.

The book is alphabetically organized, so that one can rapidly locate a dis-ease and gather a visual image and succinct pathological description. I tried to make the book comprehensive with all skin entities known to myself, although I am sure that some very rare entities were probably missed. As the emphasis is on visual learning, the great majority of diseases (with the excep-tion of some extremely rare diseases) are illustrated by images from two dif-ferent cases. The reason for this is that no two cases of the same disease have identical histomorphology. It is important for the audience to visualize varia-tions in disease presentation. Also, for every case, low, medium, and high power images are shown as this is how dermatopathologists develop diagno-sis under the microscope and build their visual image of the disease histomorphology.

On the other hand, although the book is comprehensive, the text was kept succinct for the purpose of focusing only on the diagnostic criteria needed for diagnosis. The goal was to describe all diseases in no more than five lines that are easily memorized and then accompany the text with high-quality images. That way, a novice to the field can quickly learn diagnostic criteria and mem-orize the images. On the other hand, an experienced dermatopathologist or surgical pathologist can quickly refresh his/her visual memory by reviewing images of two cases of the particular disease.

It is difficult to define the success of the book. However, for me it will be if any of the book’s images help a resident solve an unknown slide or a diag-nostician renders the correct diagnosis.
