This is the seventh edition of the Derby Access andInformation Guide for Disabled People, produced inpartnership with Burrows Communications Limited.

I know how important access to information is in deliveringopportunity and choice to disabled people. This guide, likeprevious editions provides this information with contactdetails for many City Centre traders, local organisations and Council services.

The Council, in partnership with local organisations ofdisabled people and the business community continues thedrive towards a barrier-free built environment for all citizens, and visitors to the City. I hope this guide complements theexcellent levels of accessibility and customer services providedby many City Centre businesses and organisations.

Finally, I’d like to say a big thank you to all the businesses,organisations and Council services that have supported the guide through advertising. They have made this guide possible.

Go shopping with Dial-A-Bus

The national concessionary travel pass known in Derby and Derbyshire as Gold Card gives older and disabled people free off peak bus travel.

Gold CardGold Card gives older people or those with certain disabilities: • Free local bus travel throughout England from 9.30 am - 11 pm Monday to Friday, and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.• The card also gives you discounts at over 1,400 local shops and services in Derby and Derbyshire and can be used to borrow books at any Derby and Derbyshire libraries.

If you struggle to use local bus services to get to the shops, Dial-A-Bus is for you. It provides a door-to-door service twice a week from all parts of the city to a local supermarket or the city centre. All the buses have disabled access and carry people in wheelchairs. You can bring your own helper or we can provide a helper if you need a hand with your shopping.

For further information refer to the Blue Badge holder ‘Wherecan I park guide’ which is available from Council offices.

Disabled people’s toilets

Council operated disabled people’s toilets can be accessed by a RADAR key, they are located at:

• Bold Lane car park

• Eagle Centre market – market hours

• Market Hall balcony

• Market Place opposite Tourist Information Centre (8:00 – 17:00)

• The Spot, London Road / Osmaston Road (8:00 – 17:00)

• Victoria Street (8:00 – 17:00)

Many City Centre premises including the Westfield Centre have their own disabled people’s toilet, some on theRADAR scheme. The Westfield Centre also has a ChangingPlaces toilet.

Hotels / Guest houses

Derby has lots of good quality hotels and guesthouses, tonumerous to detail in the guide. The Tourist InformationCentre (TIC) has information about accommodation in theCity and beyond. Contact TIC for further details (see UsefulContact Information on page 17).

Derby Shopmobility

What is it?Derby Shopmobility loans powered scooters and wheelchairs,plus manual wheelchairs to mobility-impaired people to assistwith travel around the City Centre. The service is part fundedby Derby City Council and a daily or hourly charge is made forequipment hire. A joining fee is payable by new members.

How do I become a member?Joining could not be simpler. All you need to do is completean application form and produce two forms of identification.Shopmobility staff will then give the necessary training and information to ensure you can use the service withconfidence and safety.

When can I use the service?Shopmobility is open Monday to Saturday 09:30 to 16:00. A bookings answerphone is available outside these hours.

Where do I find Derby Shopmobility?Shopmobility is located in the Westfield Centre basement car park, accessed via the Morledge (see City Centre map on page 18). For Shopmobility users free parking is availablein the car park.

Blue Badge holder parking

On-streetParking for badge holders is available in designated bays on the edges of the City Centre pedestrianised area. Themaximum stay is three hours. Also, free unlimited parking is available in areas covered by on-street charging andresidents only parking areas.

Three hours free parking is also available in all City Counciloperated car parks, with free unlimited parking for vehiclesexempt from road tax.

The information in the guide has been researched with care. It gives a selection of premises mainly in the City Centre.It has not been possible due to space constraints to includeevery shop, or business in the guide. If however you know ofa shop or organisation that you think should be in the guide,let us know. We will try and include it in the next edition.

The Cathedral Quarter is a pleasurableenvironment of historical streets, with arcadesand hidden entrances dotted throughout thearea, has a myriad of specialist stores andindependent retailers.

Wheelchair hire is offered from Conciergeon Level 1 near Lush, simply bring alonga form of ID which includes your address,ideally a driving licence or passport.Wheelchairs are available on a first come,first served basis and hire is free.

The Changing Places toilet provides theright equipment and space for disabledcustomers, suited to needs thatstandard disabled toilets do notprovide.
