Dear parents and students,

Welcome to all parents and students ofYear 9 and Year 10, both returning andnew to SBSHS in 2021!

I would also like to run through severalitems to ensure the school year isenjoyable and successful for all.

The first thing I would like to say was how impressed I waswith all returning students, their excitement and efficiency wasclearly evident and they slipped back into school routineimmediately. Thank you parents/carers for your help andsupport in this process.

MiddleMiddle SecondarySecondary schoolschool teamteam – Year 9 & 10 students aresupported by the following staff and at appropriate times canseek support:

2

AcademicAcademic achievementachievement – I will be monitoring the progress of allMiddle Secondary students every 10 weeks. Student’s resultsare tracked and intervention strategies implemented whererequired, to ensure all students are working to their potential.I have interviewed many students in the last week and I askparents to ensure if a performance review interview wasrequested please call and book an appointment.

PreparedPrepared forfor learninglearning - I would like to congratulate all studentsfor how prepared they have been in the last two days ensuringthey have all of their learning materials, stationery and laptopsready to go.

UniformUniform- I wish to remind all students that we are a uniformschool endorsed by the P&C and as such all students arerequired to be in full school uniform every day. Can I pleaseask for all parents to assist and ensure their child is dressedcorrectly before leaving home. Uniform details are available onthe school website.

MobileMobile phonesphones andand earphonesearphones – Students are permitted to havetheir mobile phones at school but they should be turned off andin their pocket or school bag. Ear phones are not permitted tobe used on school site.

AttendanceAttendance – In the Middle Secondary school it is expectedevery student is in attendance each and every day in everyclass. In 2021 every student’s attendance is expected to be aminimum of 93% with the only excuse for absence being illness/medical or family emergencies. There is a very clear correlationbetween high student attendance and high academicachievement.

LatenessLateness – In 2021 all students are expected to be on timeevery day, students that are late on any day will be required tohave a detention at morning tea that day in C001. This is beingdone to ensure students understand the importance of beingon time and punctual. In future years in the workforce, studentswill understand why the school is pushing punctuality. Onceagain the only acceptable excuse for lateness is medical/illnessor a family emergency, traffic is not an acceptable excuse, andthe very vast majority of students are always on time as theyensure they leave home earlier to account for the traffic that isalways there every day.

BehaviourBehaviour – Our Positive Classroom Behaviours are…

These are the behaviours I will be focussing on and highexpectations I will judge all students on.

I ask all parents to please discuss these points with theirchildren as we work together to provide a safe and productivelearning environment for all students.

Kind regards

Chris Robinson

I trust you and your family had a wonderfulbreak over the Christmas period – it nowfeels so long ago!

Once again this year, teachers will focuson writing and differentiation in theirclasses. Our school has five literacycoaches (one in each staffroom) to supportstaff with teaching writing in a consistent

way across the school, and two differentiation coaches, tosupport staff to provide learning activities at different levels toengage the wide range of learners that we have in classes.

The Writing on Demand strategy is one of our whole schoolstrategies to improve students' writing. It is used across thewhole school, Years 7 to 12 in every faculty area. This termall staff will have the opportunity to observe our coaches andHeads of Departments in classes completing the Writing onDemand strategy with students. Next term, staff willdemonstrate and be provided with written feedback. Studentswho have been at SBSHS previously are very familiar with thisstrategy…… whilst I am not sure that I can say that they ‘love’it, I can say that they know how to complete a Writing onDemand and they know what parts of the PEEL paragraphstructure they need to work on to improve their writing. WhilstQueensland and Australia have shown little improvement instudent writing in NAPLAN over the past three years, SBSHScontinues to excel.

Our differentiation coaches are working with staff on a ‘layered’curriculum concept. Using the layered curriculum in classmeans that students have choice of three levels to work at.The blue level is the foundation level, yellow is working atlevel, and green is going beyond. This strategies encouragesteachers to provide learning experiences that cater for a diverserange of abilities. It gives students choice in their learning, andprovides opportunity for students to be challenged. Ms BreeAttard, one of our differentiation coaches, says “Our studentsare so lucky to have teachers that care for them and want tocater for their individual learning needs”.

Enjoy your week!

Senior School NewsSenior School News

Welcome to our new school year! It is great to see so manystudents jumping straight into their learning. Last year we sawour first cohort of students go through the new Queenslandsyllabus, and from this process we have been able to ensureour students graduate ready for their next step. In a year

where on average across the state 87% of Year 12s receivedtheir QCE, our school bucked the trend and continued our100% achievement rate. Well done students! We are excitedto continue this journey with our new cohort of Year 11s and12s. Many students may be feeling a little nervous or perhapsunsure about what this pathway will bring. Our school providesa wealth of support for all students including our wonderfulHeads of Year Mr Barrow (Year 11) and Ms Bath (Year 12), ourGuidance Officers (Ms Wisken- Year 11 and Ms Carter - Year12), Head of Senior Schooling Mrs Seaniger and DeputyPrincipal - Mr Fitzgerald.

Our school’s philosophy towards student independent study is20/day. That is, students commit to 20 minutes of study foreach lesson they had that day. If they can ‘chunk’ their revisionthen it will seem much more achievable and also allow them tomanage school/work/family/friend balance.

Perhaps one of the most effective support tools we have inSenior School is our after school tutorials which are now upand running. Each afternoon at 1.40pm students can use theResource Centre as a study space. A schedule of whenteachers are available to visit these sessions and offer tutoringwill be emailed out to families and students this week.

A big congratulations also to our 2021 Student LeadershipTeam! Our leaders have hit the ground running already withactively engaging and leading activities in term last year. Inweek 3, students are selling chocolates and cards forValentine’s Day. Our official leadership investiture will beoccurring this term to officially recognise our student leaders.Parents and family of our leaders are welcome to attend.
