Work-based learning brings the classroom to the workplace and the workplace to the classroom.
What is an internship serve as
professional mentors by meeting with
small groups of Academy of Finance
students during the school year to as-
sist them along the work-based-
learning continuum.
Students complete a sequence of work-based-learning activities that go
beyond academics to
include the soft skills
needed to succeed in
college and the working
world which culminates
with a high-quality
and productive paid
internship.
Students have the
opportunity to tour
worksites, network with,
and shadow business
professionals.
Internships that allow
students to apply their
classroom skills and learn
more about what it takes
to succeed.
Business people guest
speak in classrooms,
serve as career coaches
and take part in mock
interviews.

Internships can occur at anytime during the year but are usually during the summer between the junior and senior year of high school. They are paid and include direct supervision and evaluation by an adult in the workplace. High quality internships are connected to career learning and produce work that furthers an employer’s organizational goals.
Providers work with the
internship coordinator to
develop a training plan
which benefits both the
student and employer.
Intern supervisors (not the
student’s teacher) evaluate
student performance at
60 and 120 hours.
High quality work is
rewarded with payment
to the student at a rate no
less than federal sub-
minimum training wage.
Providers may pay via
payroll, stipend or
scholarship donation.
A student or advisory
board member seek
internship placements
based upon student
interest.
Internships must be for a
minimum of 120 hours.

Internships allow students to demonstrate the hard and soft skills they develop throughout their academy experience.
