InadditiontocompletingalladmissionrequirementsoftheUniversity,studentswhoexpecttomajorinmusicmustcompleteaperformanceauditionandtakeaplacementexaminationinmusictheory.Studentswhoexpecttocompletetheminorinmusicstudiesmustcompleteaplacementexaminationinmusictheory.Aperformanceauditionisrequiredforappliedmusicstudies.4.2 ProvisionalorProbationaryAcceptanceStatusStudentswhodonotmeetminimumentrancestandardsmaybeacceptedonaprovisionalstatusifwrittentheoryskillsareweak.TheymustcompleteMUS1111,IntrotoMusicTheorywithagradeofBorbettertocontinueasamusicmajor.StudentswhohaveplacedintoMUSM1111MusicTheoryI,anddonotcompletethecoursewithagradeofCorbetterwillberequiredtocompleteorretakeMUS1111IntrotoMusicTheory.StudentswhodonotsuccessfullycompleteMUSM1111,MusicTheoryIafterattemptingthecoursetwotimeswillbeprohibitedfromcontinuingasamusicmajorandrequiredtocompleteachangeofmajor.Studentswhodonotmeetperformanceexpectationsatthepointofaudition,butwhoshowpromiseofdevelopingsatisfactoryskills,areacceptedonaprobationarystatusfortwosemestersofappliedmusicasamajor.Atthesecondsemesterjuryexaminationthefacultyjurycommitteewillrecommendfullstatusforcontinuedstudyasamusicmajororachangeofmajor.4.3 AcademicAdvisingDoLishaPleasantistheadvisorforallmusicmajors.SheislocatedinHWH335.Informationconcerningadvisingispostedonthedepartmentannouncementboards.Developthehabitofcheckingallbulletinboardsforannouncementsregularly.Theadvisorwillassistwithprogramplanning,scheduling,andregistration.TheAdvisorwillpostofficehourswhichvaryeachsemester.Studentsareencouragedtoscheduleappointmentsinadvance.Carefulprogramplanningwilleliminatemostschedulingproblemsandwillfacilitateatimelycompletionofyourdegree.Knowtherequirementsinyourdegreeprogram.Keepafileofgradereports,programsheets,long-rangeplans,andotherpertinentdegreeinformation.CheckwithyourAdvisor,theDepartmentCoordinator,ortheDepartmentChairbeforedroppingaclass,addingaclass,orchangingyourmajorsothatyouhaveaclearunderstandingofyouralternativesandthepossibleresultsofyouraction.EachStudentisUltimatelyResponsibleforKnowingAndMeetingallGraduationRequirements.4.4 SeekingHelpFromYourInstructorsThemusicfacultyisheretohelpyoudeveloptoyourfullestpotential.Regularattendanceatclasses,lessons,andrehearsals,andconsistentpreparationisrequiredforsuccessfulcompletionofyourmusicrequirements.Ifyouarehavingaprobleminaclass,lettheinstructorknowimmediatelysothatshe/hecansuggestwaysofremediatingthesituation.

4.5 GradeAppealsIfyoufeelthatyouhavebeengradedunfairly,FIRSTCONSULTWITHYOURINSTRUCTOR.Ifafterthisconsultationyousillbelieveyouhavebeenjudgedunfairly,contacttheDepartmentChair.4.6 AbsencePolicyIfyouaregoingtomissaclass,itisyourresponsibilitytodiscussthesituationwiththeappropriatefacultymemberinadvanceandinaccordancewiththatfacultymember’sguidelinesforclassattendance.Ifdocumentationofthereasonorreasonsforanabsenceisdesiredbythefacultymember,youwillbeinformedbythefacultymemberwhatwouldbesufficientforthatpurpose)e.g.:medicaldocumentation,proofofcourtappearance,etc.)Dependingonthefacultymember’sclassattendancepolicy,thereasonsfortheabsence,andthestudent’spriorrecordofclassattendance,thefacultymayormaynotgranttherequesttomakeupworkthathasbeenmissed.4.7 PersonalCounselingTheUniversityCounselingCenterhasanexcellentstafftrainedtohelpyouwithpersonalproblemsorproblemsadjustingtocollegelife.Donothesitatetocalluponthisofficeforanytypeofassistanceyoumayneed.TheCounselingCenterisintheCordellReedStudentUnionBuilding,Suite190,andcanbereachedat:773-995-2383.4.8 Importantstepstotakealongthewaytoabachelor’sdegreeEverySemester:Itisyourresponsibilitytobesurethatyouareproperlyregisteredforyourcoursesandyourensemble.Youmustberegisteredforeveryensembleinwhichyouareparticipating.Checkyourregistrationprintoutcarefullyandaskyouradvisorforhelpwithanydiscrepancies.Ifyoudropaclass,discussitfirstwithyouradvisorandnotifyyourinstructor.Noonebutyoucanofficiallywithdrawfromaclass,andifyoudon’twithdrawfromaclassthatyouarenolongerattending,yourgradewillbeanF.Besuretokeepafileofalltheimportantpaperworkregardingyourprogresstowardsyourdegreeandcheckwithyouradvisortobecertainyouhavecopiesofeverythingyouneedinyourfile.EndofFirstYear:Discussyourprogresswithyourprincipalappliedinstructorandaskforanevaluationofyourperformancelevelinrelationtoyourprogramrequirementsandlongrangecareergoals.CollegeofEducationApplications:ForstudentscompletingtheOptioninMusicEducationK-12,itisimportanttorememberthatyouarerequiredadmissionintotheCollegeofEducationpriortoregistrationforyourfinal20credithoursofprofessionaleducationcoursesandstudentteaching.CollegeofEducationapplicationdeadlinesare:

5.0 DegreeProgramsDuringenrollmentintheuniversity,allmusicmajorsarerequiredtoregisterforMUSM1800PerformanceClass.Thiszero-creditcourseispass/failandisbaseduponattendanceaton-campusmusicrecitals,concerts,ormasterclasses.Full-timeenrollmentrequiresattendanceataminimumof10scheduledmusicevents.Part-timeenrollmentrequiresattendanceataminimumoffivescheduledmusicevents.Studentsmaysubstituteamaximumoftwooff-campuseventswithappropriatedocumentation.

Studentswhohavenokeyboardexperiencewillbeexpectedtoacquiresomeproficiencyinpianopriortocompletionof60credithours.

5.1 BachelorofArtsinMusicStudentsmust:

• registerandparticipateinMUSM1800duringthefallandspringsemesterswhileenrolledfullorpart-timetimeattheuniversity.
