THIS PROGRAMME FOCUSES ON

DEVELOPING THE FOUR MAJOR LANGUAGE

SKILLS, VIZ. LISTENING, SPEAKING,

READING AND WRITING AND ALSO THE

APPROPRIATE USE OF GRAMMAR. THE

PROGRAMME ALSO PAYS SPECIAL

ATTENTION TO THE NEEDS OF EMPLOYEES

IN THE GOVERNMENT SECTOR AND

PRIVATE SECTOR WHO WISH TO IMPROVE

THEIR COMMUNICATION SKILLS IN TAMIL, IN

ORDER THAT THEY MAY FUNCTION MORE

EFFICIENTLY AT THEIR PLACES OF WORK. A

VARIETY OF EXERCISES, TASKS AND

ACTIVITIES HAVE BEEN DESIGNED

FOLLOWING THE COMMUNICATIVE METHOD

OF LANGUAGE TEACHING. THIS HAS BEEN

ESPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR THOSE WHOSE

FIRST LANGUAGE IS SINHALA.

Your teacher will explain the contents of this

booklet to you in class on the first day of classes.

Therefore please take this with you when you attend

the first face-to-face session.

The Programme in Tamil consists of 02

courses.

1. TG - Beginner’s Course in Tamil LSC 0203

2. Basic Course in Tamil

(i) Basic Communication Skills - I LSC1205

(ii) Basic Communication Skills - II LSC1206

COURSE DURATION

The duration of the course is two years.

TG -Beginners Course in Tamil – One year

Basic Course in Tamil – One year

GENERAL INFORMATION

Structure of the Programme

Those who enter the TG - Beginners' Course

(LSC 0203) can on eligibility, join the Programme

in Basic Tamil (LSC 1205, LSC 1206). Students

who successfully complete the programme in

Basic Tamil would be awarded a Certificate in

Basic Tamil.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY

This programme has been designed for self-study

and the course pack includes printed course

materials which will be supplied to the students.

To assist the learner, regular face-to-face

sessions will also be conducted. Teaching

Certificate in Basic Tamil

sessions of 03 hours duration will be held once a

week during weekends at the regional/Study

Centre.

In addition to the course materials and guidance

provided by the Open University, students will be

expected to make use of radio broadcasts and

television programmes.

COURSE EVALUATION

At the Open University, Course assessment

consists of 2 components.

a) Continuous Assessment (CA) and

b) Final Evaluation

The CA component for the Programme in Tamil

will consist of 03 Continuous Assessment

Tests. You will have to score 40% or more at

02 of these Continuous Assessment Tests in

order to gain eligibility to sit the final

examination.

The marks scored at the CA tests also form a

proportion of the final overall mark.

It is therefore in your interests, to present

yourself for all 03 tests and to score as highly

as possible in these tests.

The final examination consists of a written

paper.

Please note that if you do not present yourself

for at least 2 Continuous Assessment Tests,

and gain the required marks, you will not be

permitted to sit the Final Examination.

REPEAT STUDENTS

If you fail to present yourself for 02 tests and thus

fail to gain eligibility to sit the final examination,

you are considered a Repeat Student.

Repeat students have to pay an enhanced fee

when they re-register for the programme.

We therefore emphasize that you should make

sure that you attend the face-to-face sessions

and sit for at least 2 tests so that you could

complete the programme with no additional

expense.

RE-SIT STUDENTS

If you gain eligibility but does not sit for the Final

Examination or fail in the Final Examination, you

are considered a Re-sit student. Re-sit students

have to maintain their studentship in order to be

called for the examination next year. (To maintain

studentship, you will have to pay a fee).

Re-sit students cannot attend classes.

GROUP NUMBER

You are assigned to a group based on your

performance at the grading test.

Lists giving the group numbers of the respective

students will be exhibited on the notice boards of

the Regional/Study/Teaching centres on the first

day of classes. Please note down your group

number from the lists in your centre and attend

the classes accordingly. Please note that you

are not allowed to change the group to which

you are assigned.

WITHDRAWING FROM THE PROGRAMME

If you wish to withdraw from a Programme you

should write a letter and inform SAR/Student

Affairs Division with a copy to Head/Dept. of

Language Studies within two months (02) of

Registration. Then you may be allowed to re-

register again for that Programme in future

without being considered a repeat student.

Please state your Registration Number and

reason for withdrawal.

STUDENT IDENTITY CARD

Do not forget to bring your Student's Registration

Book whenever you come to your study centre or

the Open University, Nawala.

It would also be advisable to carry your National

ID card at all times.

FUTURE COMMUNICATION

As most of the communication with you in future

will be done through your Regional/Study/

Teaching Centre you are advised to read any

notices that might appear on the notice board in

the Regional/Study/Teaching Centre from time to

time.
