As a result of a recent on-site inspection, the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) has awarded accreditation to the clinical laboratories the Little Company of Mary Hospital Main Campus, Care Station East and Care Station West (OPCC).

LCMH Laboratory Director, Robert Pooley, MD, was notified of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided.

The US federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, which began in the early 1960’s, as being equal-to or more-stringent-than the government’s own inspection program. During the CAP accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors examine the laboratories, records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. Congratulations to the team at Little Company of Mary Hospital Main Campus, Care Station East and Care Station West (OPCC) for the excellent work they do every day to maintain the stringent standards set by the CAP Accreditation Committee.

Brave BeginningsLee Batsakis, Public Relations & Marketing Specialist

This month, members of the Brave Beginnings Neonatal Grants Committee toured the Neonatal Special Care Unit at LCMH. Recently, LCMH was awarded a grant to purchase an Airborne 750i Neonatal Transport Incubator (pictured below) to aid in the treatment of our littlest patients. Brave Beginnings, a Program of the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation, provides grants for essential neonatal intensive care equipment such as critical airway carts, infant resuscitators, incubators, omnibeds and much more.

“We are most grateful for this addition to our Special Care Unit,” said Mary Grimm, RN. “This equipment plays an important role in caring for our newborns in need of extra care while allowing the opportunity for mom and dad to stay by their side.”

Do You Know What’s ‘Round the Hospital?Anne Marie Ross, Events & Publications Coordinator

Each month, we will be featuring an item in a prominent hospital location and our Rounds readers will have the chance to win a prize for guessing where in the hospital this can be found. This month, Doc Clemens from Brave Beginnings made a pit-stop during his recent hospital tour for a quick photo-op. Can you guess where Doc is in the photo? Autumn AbundanceEileen McNichols, Director Community Health and Pastoral Care

As summer comes to a close, autumn has many wonderful gifts to share. The cooler temperatures, the change in fresh produce, sweaters, the beauty of the autumn leaves. Even though it may be warm today, we are blessed to have autumn’s gifts to anticipate.

Let’s think of autumn as a time of renewal, a chance for a fresh start at living a full and healthy life. Put away the shorts and the swim suits and take out the corduroys and sweaters. As the season changes walking, jogging and biking become more comfortable in the cooler weather. Staying active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. The change in season allows for a change in activity as well. Lawn mowing becomes less frequent but never fear; raking waits just around the corner. Autumn brings the crisp air, apple picking, pumpkin carving, the beautiful fall foliage, and the crunch of leaves underfoot. Consider taking a hike in one of the local forest preserves on a cool afternoon.

Awaken your palate to the wonderful and nutritious fruits and vegetables that come in season during autumn. Autumn’s crops carry the promise of an assortment of new flavors and textures to delight the senses: apples, figs, pears, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and winter squash to name just a few.

A key element to a healthy lifestyle is a positive attitude. Surround yourself with others who can appreciate the beauty of autumn. Seek the positive in every day. Maybe it is the leaves as they change color. Maybe it’s the joy of opening the windows and watch as the cool breeze gently moves the curtains. Maybe it’s watching the geese fly overhead in a V formation as they begin their winter migration. Always remember that only you can control your attitude. Use that power to transform your life. Eat well, move, and focus on the positive.

The Little Company of Mary Health Education Center offers a variety of programs and services to help you achieve your health goals. Make this autumn the season of YOU. Call the Health Education Center at 708 423-5774 or x5830 to find just the right program for you.

Rounds Inspired Employees on a Mission of Caring and Wellness

You are sick and need to come to the hospital and be admitted. You are anxious, scared and desperate for information. Once admitted, we take your clothes and ask you to wear a hospital gown that exposes your backside and leaves you feeling vulnerable. The bed, well, it’s not home, not your pillow, not your blanket, not your quiet bedroom that is so familiar to you.

Add IV’s, medications and tests that are scary in their own right. You pray for a good outcome, a negative biopsy, a good lab value…while you wait and worry, desperate for information. So many people coming in and out of that room, all with different roles and tasks to fulfill…it’s so confusing. Isn’t it?

All of a sudden someone knocks to come into your room. They wash their hands and walk over to you, all the while making eye contact. They introduce themselves, explain their role in your care, demonstrate empathy and communicate in a way you understand. Maybe they lightly squeeze your hand while they listen to your fears and concerns while providing the follow up and communication you so deserve and crave.

That’s all we want as patients, don’t you think? We must remind ourselves with every patient, every encounter, every time. This could be our mother, our father, spouse, child, loved one. Even you! How blessed we are to be able to care for those at their most vulnerable. Please never forget that and empower your team to remember this… always!

New Vascular Access TeamKatie Murray, 5W Nurse Manager/Stroke Program Coordinator

I am happy to introduce the new Vascular Access Team that consists of two highly trained nurses. Cathy Madura, RN, (right) who has worked as a staff nurse here in the ICU. She also is a certified infusion nurse (CRNI) for more than 12 years. Cathy Lowery (left) joins the Little Company of Mary family with more than 20 years of experience as a vascular access nurse. These two professionals have a wealth of knowledge with regards to insertion of PICC lines, midlines, mediports, and hemodialysis catheters. They will see patients from 9am to 8pm and offer coverage from five to six days a week.

The nursing staff can put in a referral order for the Vascular Access Team by entering an order via Meditech called “VASCULAR ACCESS RN REFERRAL.” They can also be paged at x1396 or x1376. The “Cathy duo” will round on all inpatient central lines and provide education

to the staff regarding proper central line maintenance.

This team is an excellent resource for our nursing staff.Welcome and Congrats!
