Multicultural….Multi-Fantastic!

Our school is renowned for its vastlydifferent cultures. Many of these cultureswere celebrated in Forest Lake State HighSchool’s inaugural Multi-Cultural Festivalnight last week.

The festival was a spectacular showcase of several differentethnicities and backgrounds, involving energetic dances andharmonious melodies. The cultures showcased included: -Indian, Samoan, Cook Island, Nigerian, Tongan and Tokelauancultures, with the night topped off with a performance from theaward-winning Multi-Fest Polynesian groups.

It was a great experience for all involved and the energy fromthe performers was contagious. The entire audience wasengaged in each act and some audience members even had

the opportunity to join the performers on stage. The night wasvery successful and students are hopeful that it will continue formany years to come.

An enormous thanks must go to all the performers who createdthis marvellous event; to Ms Laing for facilitating and organisingthe night; Mr Faataape and Mr Motu for aiding the performers;the Student Leadership Association for providing funds andvolunteers; Ms Raward for catering for the event; Ms Matthewand her backstage crew for their magical work with the soundand lighting; to all the teachers who came to supervise andfinally to all the family and friends who came - your contributionmade this a spectacular night!

Emu Gully year 11 LeadershipCamp

Fifty five Year 11 students attended theEmu Gully leadership camp in October thisyear. We were given many difficult andchallenging activities to complete. Usingtrust, mateship and of course leadership,we managed to survive the threeexhausting, long days. We learnt many new

skills and conquered our fears. We even stepped out of ourcomfort zones to complete the challenging tasks, whichincluded a maze of tunnels, mud pits and pulling a 6-tonnetruck. These activities helped us find strengths within ourselvesthat we had been unaware of before.

After stepping off the bus we settled into our cabins and wereintroduced to the Emu Gully staff. They explained the campactivities and separated us into three groups; Alpha, Bravoand Charlie. I was placed in Charlie. My group consisted ofpeople who I didn’t know well and wouldn’t usually hang-outwith. However, we were taught that getting along with ourteammates and working together to problem-solve woulddevelop us as leaders of good character. We conquered ourshyness and got along extremely well. Each team faced manytough and tiresome challenges. Our goal for each activity wasto get every single team member across each obstacle and todo this successfully, we needed to unite as one and trust oneanother.

Activities such as the maze of tunnels, the mud pit and pullinga 6-tonne truck taught us to step outside our comfort zonesand conquer our fears. The pitch-black, narrow tunnels werefilled with mud puddles. There was no time to stop, we hadto keep going, listening to the voices of encouragement fromour fellow teammates. It felt like an eternity before we emergedmuddy, but relieved. Before stepping foot inside the tunnels,I was terrified. However, with the help and motivation of my

teammates, I managed to conquer this fear and complete thischallenge alongside them.

The mud pit was pure, physical endurance and we quicklybecame covered in mud from head to toe. Our challenge wasto carry one of our teammates on a stretcher across muddy pitsand hills. This was a huge challenge for all of us as none of ushad ever done something like this before. With our teammatesbeside us, we didn’t think twice and did our best to ensurethat the person on the stretcher was carried safely to theother side of the long mud-pit track. This activity required teamcooperation.

Due to the heavy rain that had occurred, the original activity of anight walk was changed to the challenge to pull a 6-tonne truckup and down the dirt camp road. We did this in groups andon the third time we decided to combine our efforts into onegroup, with some pulling and swapping out when tired, to getthe job done. This activity was an inspiration to us all. It gave usa strong bond as we worked together to face our adversity.

This camp was the most amazing and enjoyable camp I haveever been on. Every activity we endured created unbreakablebonds and new friendships. Together we experienced whatis required to be there for one another. We now understandthe ANZAC core-values of mateship, courage, sacrifice andendurance. We couldn’t have done it without the Emu Gullystaff; Chris, Emma and Josh and the Forest Lake staff; MsErnst, Ms Damen, Mr Daniels, Ms Monk and Mrs Hammant. They inspired us to work together as one, face our fears, complete each challenge and recognise the role of others inallowing us to do this. For that I would like to thank them. Welearned how to problem-solve, tackle challenges and most of allbecome leaders for the future generation.

Year 11 English CommunicationExcursion

Last week, Year 11 EnglishCommunication travelled by bus on a scarytour of Brisbane’s three main haunts;Boggo Road Gaol, Kangaroo Point andToowong Cemetery at the base of MountCoot-tha.

At Boggo Road Gaol, the group was split into two groupsand taken around the gaol, listening to stories of those whohad once lived there and now haunt the grounds. KangarooPoint also has a gruesome story behind it that links to theToowong Cemetery. The story involves a murder and a familywho became rich overnight, who now rest peacefully in thecemetery. Or do they?

It was a great day out and it has helped students with theirEnglish assessment, helping them be more creative and givingthem amazing ideas for stories.

GriffithBUSINESSAmbassador ProgramWorkshop 3.

The GriffithBUSINESSAmbassadors Program offers anintroduction to university life whilstproviding students with a greaterunderstanding of the businessworld. The program provided anopportunity for our exceptional

students, who are currently studying a Business subject inYears 10 or 11, to become Business Ambassadors.

Lecturer Dr Julienne Senyard, Department of Marketing hostedthe workshop and conducted a presentation on the topic ofdesign thinking and entrepreneurship. This included howentrepreneurs change the world through creating products andservices that are valued and wanted by their customers. Thesesolutions are often generated by creatively thinking aboutproblems and how it can be done differently, and then comingup with new solutions to these problems.

Students from all schools worked together in groups of four orfive and during these sessions completed an activity based ontheir learning, working collaboratively to produce a two minutegroup presentation.

Congratulations to our new Griffith Ambassadors. Each studentwill receive a Certificate of Participation and officially becomea Griffith Business School Ambassador. Special thanks to MrDon Massey for organising and providing this opportunity to ourstudents.

Stars in their Eyes

Last week, eighteen brave studentsfrom the Student Enrichment Centre, embarked on an excursion to explorethe earth and the stars. For many ofthese students, this was their firstexcursion and they approached thejourney ahead with much trepidation.

Supported by staff, they headed to theMt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens. Herethey explored biomes from the tropical

Amazon Rainforest, the arid Kalahari Desert and the temperategardens of Japan, all without leaving Brisbane. At each stop, they examined the plants and insect life that called their biomehome. Students also participated in discussions about how thedifferences of each environment affected the way communitieslive, work, travel and play in each biome.

Throughout the journey, students were amazed at how theywere not only able to see the differences between each biome, but they were able to feel the differences. From the stiflinghumidity of the rainforest to the serenity of the Japanesegardens, the students were completely immersed.

After a break from exploring the world, students headed offon a journey through the stars at the Brisbane Planetarium.Students watched in awe as they were able to see the sky in a

new way by watching the path the planets take across the sky, examining how the zodiac is connected to the solar system andsee the stars without the pollution of city lights.

Students then went on a hunt for knowledge, and examinedhow modern developments in space flight have helped usunderstand the solar system better. They raced through thevarious exhibits, competing with themselves and each other, tosee who could be the first to find the hidden information.

After an exhausting day exploring, students headed back toschool and reflected on their journey. The students had manydifferent highlights and even the ones that had been hesitant togo, had loved the experience.

SEC National Disability Insurance Scheme

Last Thursday the Student Enrichment Centre held aninformation session for parents, caregivers and staff about theNational Disability Insurance Scheme. It was great to have somany parents and staff attend, not only from our school butfrom the local schools within the wider community.

It is very important that people are aware of what changesthe NDIS will bring for people with disabilities. The NDIS isrolling out in this region in July 2018 and families can start theirregistration process from the beginning of 2018.

From the P & CThere is always discussion flowing in ourhouse about all sorts of things. Currenttopics include important matters likebirthday cakes, sport, part time jobopportunities, sport and, more recently, why to serve as a leader and what is a goodleader.

There are over 2000 books written eachyear on leadership, offering practical “howto’s” and “here is my model” of leadership.

Whilst some offerings are helpful, others can be somewhatmisguided. Here are some common themes that haveremained mission critical to leadership over the years….

And as parents, we are leaders in our household. These tipsare as equally important in our parenting role while we raise ourchildren as they are when we lead in other contexts.

As always, you can contribute to the shape of our school andcommunity by participating in the P&C Association. We meetmonthly, on the fourth Tuesday.

• Leadership is about service, not beingserved. Someone wishing to be aleader does not do it for recognition orinternal affirmation, but a desire toserve others and achieve purpose.

• Leadership is less about techniqueand more about character. Mistakenly it is believedbecause you are in a position of leadership, peoplewill choose to follow. You may have a microsecondof followership because of your leadership position, however character will define your followership. Themedium of leadership (the character of the person) isthe message (the how to of leadership).

• Leadership is hard work and requires resilience. There are no easy ways around it. True leadership istested when a decision needs to be taken that differsfrom some or the majority of people who usuallyfollow.

• Leadership is hopeful and expectant. Leaders haveto be able to lift the eyes of those they lead to showpotential, possibility and outcome beyond what couldbe hoped or imagined.
