YEAR 10 EXAMS The last three days have seen our Year 10 students sitting their end of year exams. These exams are an important aspect of the schools assessment program as well as providing students with the opportunity to sit formal exams in preparation for their senior schooling. Staff are able to use these exams to assess where students are up to and to provide support for students as they move through into the senior school. ANDREW FULLER As mentioned in the last newsletter we have been fortunate enough to secure the services of Andrew Fuller to work with our school community on Monday 27 th and Tuesday 28 th November. A parent/ community session will be run on Monday 27 th November starting at 6.30pm in the Multi Purpose Centre at the High School. This session will focus on Building Resilience in Children and Teens. Resilience and emotional intelligence are essential life skills that set kids up for happy great lives. Developing resilience is the most powerful way to protect kids from drugs, violence and unsafe behaviours. Some of the topics that will be covered in this session are: •The active ingredients of resilience and how parents, grandparents and community can develop it in young people •How parents can develop these in their children •Friendship skills •Parenting tricky kids •Building self-esteem and dealing with set backs •The essential conversations to have with your boy or girl It would be fantastic to see as many people attend as possible. Tuesday will see Andrew Fuller working with groups of students in a series of workshops focusing on developing resilience. It is then planned to have a follow up session in Term 1 of 2018. DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM Our very successful Driver Education Program is on again next week. This is a truly amazing program that has the fantastic support of so many parts of our community. Please remember that on Monday 20 th November that we will be having Sacha Kaluri running a parent session on Resilience, Cyber Bullying, Bullying and much more. This is a combined event between Deniliquin High School, the NSW Department of Education, St Vincent de Paul Society and Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group. This evening will commence at 7pm in the Multi Purpose Centre at the High School and is a free event. ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL It is important that students maintain their attendance at school through to the end of the year. While we are nearing the end of 2017 normal classes are still running and it is important that students are not missing school unnecessarily. While we understand there are times when students will be absent we ask that you please make contact with the office on the day of their absence or send in a note on the first day back at school. This ensures that all absences are explained and our records are up to date. If students need to leave school at any time during the day they should present to the front office before school with a note. No student should be leaving the school grounds without having followed these procedures unless they already have a lunch pass. It is important that students are in attendance at the school for the whole day, no students should be leaving the school grounds at recess or lunch without the express permission of their parents and the school. If these procedures are followed it will make it easier for the school to monitor students. ENGLISH NEWS This week has been a busy one for our students. Year 10 have completed their Yearly Exam. Their exam consisted of three sections: textual analysis, creative writing and an analytical response. This style of testing helps to prepare students for the senior exams they will experience in Years 11 and 12. On Wednesday afternoon, selected Year 7 students competed in the annual Drama Extravaganza. The competition showcased two groups from each Year 7 class, demonstrating their ability to work as a team, think creatively and perform to a high standard. Students completed a series of three improvisations: 30 Second Advertisement, Genre Story and Space Jump. All students put their best foot forward and performed with enthusiasm. A full report, complete with photographs, will be in the next newsletter. Students completing Year 11 Standard in 2018 have received notes for their excursion to Melbourne to view ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ in Term One. Students are reminded that they must return their note and money to the Front Office by the end of term.

YEAR 10 GIRLS SHEKAN WORKSHOP On Friday 10

th November, the year 10 girls, Mrs

Glowrey and Mrs Van Lieshout were lucky enough to spend almost 3 hours with Shez and Kell from ‘SheKan’. The session had an underlying theme of EMPOWERMENT and students were taught how to ‘take control’ of their emotions by CHOOSING to be positive, happy, and powerful, rather than negative, unhappy, and a victim by CONTROLLING what they focus on and tell themselves. The girls also looked at goal setting and learning to deal with different personality types. I think the highlight was the challenge working in personality groups to solve a problem. The energy in the room was amazing and the girls embraced the contagious enthusiasm that the presenters brought to the room. I can’t wait for the follow up sessions next year with the ladies from SheKan.

YEAR 11 HOSPITALITY EXCURSION Year 11 Hospitality went to the Long Table Café along with Barham High School on the 24

th October

to participate in a “Paddock to Plate experience.” As part of the day, students were taken on a Farm Tour where organic farming practices were discussed. Following that the students also milked the goats and made a soft cheese using the curds and whey technique. A fresh pasta lunch was prepared, cooked and enjoyed by all. It was a great opportunity to learn about sustainable food practices. Thanks to Mr Tobin for getting us there.

HOWMAN’S GAP 2017 Bright and early on Tuesday the 7

th November, fifty

one excited students and 5 slightly less excited staff boarded the bus to Howman’s Gap for the 2017 Year 9 Camp. After an uneventful trip we settled in for the next four days of back-to-back activities. This included canoeing, abseiling, high ropes, bushwalking, archery, bush cooking, orienteering and the climbing wall. All staff were impressed by the willingness of the students to have a go at all activities. In particular it was impressive to see students face their fears of heights and force themselves to back out over the 15m high cliff for abseiling (although the walk back to camp afterwards was not as rewarding). Other highlights included the Amazing Race, organised by Mr Perizzolo, which saw students work together in their activity groups to pass challenges and solve riddles, and the 10km round trip bushwalk, which for some groups did include getting to see snow. This was a fantastic group of students to take on excursion and they were great role models for the school. Their co-operation and positive attitudes were of real credit to them. Well done, Year 9! -Miss Burton

NEWS FROM THE STUDENT SUPPORT OFFICER Deniliquin High School hosted the annual Long Paddock Dramatic Minds Festival on the 1

st

November. The “Long Paddock Dramatic Minds Festival” is an annual short dramatic performance festival involving high school students in the Deniliquin area. The festival is mental health promotion event which engages students in a creative way to explore issues associated with youth mental health. High School students work with mental health clinician to come up with their own topic and develop their performance. There were four High Schools involved in the festival this year: Moama Anglican Grammar, Finley, Balranald Central and Deniliquin High School. The topics covered this year were: R U Ok Day? Attention Deficit Hyper-activity Disorder, Post Natal Depression and Domestic Violence. There were over 300 people in the audience at the two performances. The Deniliquin High School topic was Domestic Violence and it was a movement piece. The piece was about the struggles to break free from an abusive relationship and how to seek assistance. It was aptly named “Breaking Free” and the cast were: Rylee Strong, Izzy Salter-Warren, Beth Laverty and Emily Creely. It was written, choreographed, narrated and directed by Grace Jefferies. The piece was performed to the song “Give me Love” by Ed Sheeran. Naoka Owen, Billi-Jo Austin and Bella Hammond presented a traditional dance. Mrs Jansen worked with a group of students and presented a traditional middle eastern belly dance to the audience. The dancers were: Charli Gray, Chloe Hammond, Maddisun Lavars, Phoebe O'Neill, Rebecca Rourke, Kimberly Cartwright, Harriet Bain, Amy Rodda, Rylee Strong, Bella Hammond, Emily Creely and Maddie Irwin. The Master of Ceremonies for the day was Olivia Duffey and she did a fantastic job. The MAD Squad also assisted on the day. Students had the opportunity to create posters based on the Mental Health theme “Share the Journey”. I would like to thank all of the students and staff involved in the Festival. It was an excellent day for all involved. All the students were great ambassadors for Deniliquin High School. On Wednesday 8

th November, Billi-Jo Austin and

Naoka Owen were asked to perform the traditional dance for the Intereach annual gathering at the Waring Gardens. They performed in front over of 150 Intereach staff from across the region. It was another way that our Deniliquin High School students are positively representing our school in the community.

YEAR 10 DRIVER EDUCATION Next week, all Year 10 students will be involved in the Driver Education Program. The program is a joint venture between the PDHPE Faculty and the dedicated Driver Education Sub-Committee of the P&C. The program is supported by many generous community organisations and builds on the teaching and learning that has already occurred this term in PDHPE lessons. Some activities which the students will participate in, include; TEEN MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID: students will complete the third of three sessions for the Teen Mental Health First Aid Course and learn about mental health issues and how to support and seek assistance for a friend who is having a mental health crisis. At each place, students will learn what part this agency plays in processing a road accident. DENILIQUIN CAR CLUB; a practical session on improving driving skills at the Deniliquin Car Club. MOCK ACCIDENT; students will witness our emergency services in action as they respond to a mock accident and remove and treat victims trapped in a car following a collision.
