WE’RE SUPPORTING UN GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK 6-12 MAY 2019

WHY GET INVOLVED? 1.35 million people die on the world’s roads every year and road traffic injury continues to be the leading cause of death for young people globally. The simple fact remains that these deaths can be prevented and health greatly improved for millions more if leaders committed to funding proven solutions.

We need political will and strong leadership to save lives. That’s why this year the UN Global Road Safety Week theme is leadership. We are calling on global leaders to prioritise the heath, rights and futures of young people. To demand leadership on the leading killers of young people – road traffic injury among other health burdens – we are calling for a Global Summit on Adolescent Health.

Together, we can show that the status quo will no longer stand and urge policy makers to take action, to make our streets safe and healthy for all. Every body can be a road safety leader and it starts with speaking up!

DEMAND ACTION BY TAKING PART IN UN GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK

1. CLAIM YOUR RIGHTS#SpeakUp for your right to use safe and healthy streets by signing up to the This is My Street campaign at mystreet.org.

2. ASSESS YOUR JOURNEY & DEMAND CHANGE:#SpeakUp and highlight the risks on your journey and what makes you feel unsafe. Share your findings and your demands on social media using #SpeakUp and #thisismystreet. Take a photo with our campaign materials included in this pack.

3. BUILD SUPPORT IN YOUR COMMUNITY: Once you have identified the risks, build support within your community to demand change. Use the petition included in this pack to collect signatures in your neighbourhood, to present to your nominated policy maker. Document action in your community by sharing pictures on social media with our materials in this pack using #SpeakUp and #thisismystreet.

4. #SPEAKUP & HOST A #THISISMYSTREET EVENT:Present the petition to your policy maker and encourage them to join a campaign signing ceremony. Bringing together the community and policy makers alike, ask everyone to sign the This is Our Demand message board in support of your call for action. Document the support you have achieved by sharing the campaign photos on social media using #Speakup and #thisismystreet. Your leadership and action will encourage others to do the same!
