Realtors Stephanie Hunter and Shannon Kewley are trying to organize a group interested in saving the Flick Residence at 5584-8A Ave. in Tsawwassen. Built in 1905 by Enos Flick as part of a larger farm prop- erty at the time, the updated 2,600-square-foot, wood-frame cottage is listed at $1.18 million. It sits on a 6,400-square-foot lot. “The Flick Residence is valu- able as the oldest and last sur- viving early settler’s cottage in Tsawwassen, and represents the original development of agri- cultural land in the Tsawwassen area, which was some of the richest farmland in the Lower Mainland,” according to Delta’s heritage register. Hunter, who is the listing agent, said she’s concerned the house will only be seen as a tear- down. “There is already interest from offshore buyers who likely will demolish the home and gardens,” Hunter and Kewley warned in a news release last weekend just before an open house was held. Saving the home from a potential wrecking ball is espe- cially important for Kewley, who grew up in it. She told the Optimist that keeping the house at its current location or perhaps even moving it are options that should be explored. AWARENESS: see Page 3 Port opponents make more than a peep! Homeless individualssleeping in in cars, camp-ers and other vehicles areusing Delta’s industrialareas as a safe place tocamp out for the night.

That’s what was uncov-ered during recent munici-pal bylaw sweeps of theindustrial zones.

After Delta amendedits bylaws this year torestrict commercial vehi-cle parking overnight onany highway, a regulationconsistent with adjacentcities, bylaw inspec-tors have been checkingAnnacis Island and theTilbury Industrial Park forcommercial trucks beingparked on the streets.Truck owners from aroundthe region had been driv-ing their cars to the areasand parking there duringthe day while they drovetheir big rigs for work, then would park theirtrucks there at night. It wasa growing complaint forbusiness owners.

A staff report to Deltacouncil notes after warn-ings and enforcementactions were taken, there’snow few, if any, com-mercial vehicles parkingon the street overnight inboth areas.

However, the report alsonoted while conductingparking enforcement atnight, bylaws staff encoun-

tered a number of home-less individuals sleepingin campers and vans atroadside.

“These concerns werepassed on to Delta policefor their information,” thereport notes.

Bylaws manager HughDavies told the Optimistovernight camping on thestreet was already prohib-

ited under Delta’s bylaws. He also noted you’ll findhomeless people in anygiven industrial area.

“It’s all over the LowerMainland,” Davies said.“If you’re living in yourcar, where are you goingto park? You’re not goingto park in a residentialstreet necessarily becausethe residents will look out

and ask what that personis doing there, so there’sa tendency to gravitate toindustrial areas and parkyour vehicles there whereyou would feel safe.”

Davies, who was amember of the DeltaPolice Department for 30years before joining theCorporation of Delta, saidthey would usually onlyenforce the bylaw in more“extreme circumstances.”

Two years ago, volun-teers throughout Deltaconducted a homelesscount, revealing a hiddenpopulation of people whoare couch surfing or sleep-ing in their cars.

Kay Dennison, a mem-ber of the Delta SeniorsPlanning Team, at the timesaid the count confirmedthere are homeless peoplein both North Delta andSouth Delta, as well as anincrease in seniors whoare homeless.

The count was part ofa Metro Vancouver countconducted every threeyears to provide a snap-shot of the homeless.

CONTINUED from Page 1“Ultimately, to preserve

the house, we wanted tobring awareness to thisbecause it would be everso sad to see it torn down,”she said.

“We’re hoping to createa higher level of conver-sation and collectivelymaybe a few people canget together and make adown payment, rent it outand try to figure some-thing out, and talk to thecity of Delta and see ifthere’s any chance of get-ting it declared a heritagehome so it can’t be torndown,” Kewley added.

Preserving heritagestructures has been mak-ing news due to a numberof contentious develop-ment proposals as wellas the demolition of the

historic Kittson Houseon Highway 10. The civicheritage committee isworking on a new heritagestrategy that will come toDelta council sometimethis year.

For now, in addition tohaving heritage conser-vation areas, as well as anumber of incentives forowners of heritage build-ings looking to redevelop,Delta has a couple ofso-called heritage inven-tories: the Rural HeritageInventory adopted in 1998and the Urban HeritageInventory adopted in2000. Being on an inven-tory means the property isflagged for discussion forincentives for preservationand maintenance, but thatdoesn’t prevent a build-ing from ultimately being

knocked down.There’s also a Delta

Heritage Register, adoptedin 1999. It’s the officialregister of sites of heritagesignificance. Propertiesare added by council anddo not require the owner’sapproval, but it has beencouncil’s policy to seekvoluntary agreements.

Properties on theregister are automati-cally added to a provincialheritage register and areeligible for inclusion on aCanadian register, howev-er, being on it also doesn’tguarantee protection. The Flick Residence ison the register, the oldestTsawwassen home on it.

A move that wouldassure homes like theFlick Residence aren’ttorn down would be for

council to designate themas “Designated HeritageProperties.” That designa-tion, also usually done inDelta if an owner agrees, means a home can’t betorn down.

Council can also imposea temporary protectionorder for up to 60 daysif it considers that herit-

age property might beadversely affected by adevelopment application.Such a move was done forthe Kittson House, but itwas ultimately torn down.

Anyone wanting moreinformation about theFlick Residence can con-tact Hunter at [email protected].

While some homeless people in Delta are easy to spot, what’s more difficult todetermine is the number of hidden homeless, including those living in their carsand camping in such areas as Tilbury or Annacis Island.

Elevated lead levelshave been detected in thedrinking water at severalDelta schools.

The school districtmade public late last weekthe results of a first roundof water testing conductedin “three of our olderschools in Delta,” althoughit didn’t name them.

“Each school showedslightly positive lead lev-els above the maximumacceptable level in ‘pre-flush’ pipe water (eight outof 15 samples were abovethe maximum acceptablelevel),” a notice on the dis-trict’s website stated.

According to the district, three of the positive tests

were in drinking fountains. In post-flush testing, onlyone source of the 15 wasstill high.

The district’s facili-ties department has puttogether an initial miti-gation plan starting thisweek that includes remov-ing the suspect drinkingfountains, daily morningflushes of all pipes in olderschools and water testingin all schools built before1989.

Based on the testresults, future plans will bedeveloped.

The tests results areexpected back from thelaboratory by mid-Mayand once received, thedistrict says it will act onany concerns and com-municate to schools and

parents.“In the interim, schools

are undertaking preven-tative measures, whichincludes running waterfor a couple of minutes atall drinking fountains andclassroom faucets eachmorning to mitigate anytrace of any potential con-taminants in the water,”the district stated.

Noting the water qual-ity in Delta is amongst thebest in the world, the dis-trict said there are no leadpipes in any of the schools’water systems. Buildingsbuilt prior to 1989 havecopper piping and thestandard practice hadbeen to externally solderpipes with a compoundthat may have includedlead.

Earlier this month, B.C.New Democrats called onthe provincial governmentto implement routinemandatory water qualitytests at all schools in theprovince to prevent chil-dren from being exposedto higher lead levels intheir drinking water.

The call came afterelevated levels were foundin some schools in PrinceRupert.

The B.C. Teachers’Federation also joined thecall for mandatory testing.

Earlier this year, theMinistry of Educationwrote to school districtsinforming them to workwith their health authori-ties to evaluate water qual-ity in schools built before1989.

The annual Delta Career and Technical Career Fair last Thursday at the Sungod Recreation Centre offeredyoung people plenty of ideas for potential career paths. The largest number of attendees and exhibitors yettook part in the event, started byMayor Lois Jackson in 2013 to inspire students to pursue a variety of careeroptions in the trades and technical areas. The event featured hands-on, interactive exhibits, demonstra-tions and the opportunity to talk directly with experts in the field. Jackson said getting a university degreeshouldn’t be considered an automatic for young people because learning a trade could land them a high-paying job and a rewarding career.

For Laurie, even gettingout of the house was a bigchallenge.

Now 22, she knows first-hand the struggle dealingwith mental health issues, which included debilitat-ing anxiety in high schooland lengthy panic attacksthat kept her home forover a month.

Laurie wants to shareher experiences withothers also facing men-tal health challenges atan event at South DeltaSecondary next week.

Sponsored by theDelta Division of FamilyPractice, the public infor-mation forum, Anxietyin Children and Youth, will be an opportunityfor young people to learnabout the “collaborative”project.

“I am involved in thecollaborative (B.C. Childand Youth Mental Healthand Substance UseCollaborative) as a youthvoice who has lived expe-rience. I’ve been there andI know what did and didn’twork. The best part is thatthe other people involvedare so excited for my feed-back and the feedbackof other youth like me,”Laurie says.

According to theCanadian Mental HealthAssociation, it’s estimatedthat 10 to 20 per cent ofCanadian youth are affect-ed by a mental illness ordisorder.

What’s more, research publishedin the Australian andNew Zealand Journal ofPsychiatry found teenag-ers are experiencing moredepression and anxietythan they did a decadeago.

The review of 19 studiesconducted across 12 coun-tries found the majorityshowed a deterioration inthe mental health of teen-age girls when it came todepressive and anxioussymptoms.

Laurie says there aremany issues the collabora-tive is working to addressand she believes stigmaand difficulties findinghelp are the most impor-tant ones that need to beaddressed.

“We need to be as openabout mental health issuesas we can be because theyaffect us all. If we can startan open dialogue, youth, parents and even serviceproviders will feel less

alone and hopeless whenthey need help,” she says.

“I am excited for theMay 9th event becauseI hope that informationabout mental health beingshared openly as well ashearing stories from peo-ple who have actually livedwith issues like anxiety willstimulate conversation.”

The upcoming informa-tion forum is organizedby the Delta Local Action

Team, part of the B.C.Child and Youth MentalHealth and Substance UseCollaborative, which is apartnership of Doctors ofB.C. and the provincialgovernment.

The session is open toyouth, parents, teachers, educators and care provid-ers. Guest speakers willinclude child and adoles-cent psychiatrist Dr. SaraJunaid, Lynne Godfrey

with The FORCE, as wellas youth and parents shar-ing their personal stories.

It takes place Monday,May 9 at the SDSS theatrefrom 6 to 8:30 p.m. Theevent includes resourcetables, presentations, apanel discussion as wellas a reception and prizedraw.

It’s a lot harder than it looks.

That truism applies to a host ofendeavours, one of which is try-ing to balance the Delta schooldistrict’s budget, which a board of

seven trustees is compelled to do everyspring, usually by hacking and slashingprograms and positions to offset theinevitable shortfall.

The irony here is these trustees puttheir names on the ballot for a schoolboard seat because they want to seeDelta kids get the best education possi-ble, yet every April, like clockwork, theylament the cutbacks they’re forced toreluctantly approve.

When you look at the compositionof the board, it doesn’t strike you asa group that’s unsympathetic to theplight of students, teachers, district staffand parents.

There’s a former president of theDelta Teachers’ Association as well asanother retired Delta teacher, while thetwo newest members, one of whom isa school counsellor, both ran under theKids Matter banner in the last electionthat advocated for a properly fundededucation system.

I have no doubt that all seven trus-tees would love to oversee a districtthat offers everything staff and studentsdesire, but wanting to do so, or evenbelieving it’s the right thing to do, is awhole lot different than actually makingit happen.

Faced with funding realities, they canchoose to cut where they think it willhave the least impact in order to makethe numbers add up or they can putforward a budget that isn’t balanced, which would likely be the last act theyundertake as school trustees.

The Vancouver board took a standlast week as trustees there narrowlyrejected a budget that would havecalled for $24 million in cuts, whichmeans they face the very real prospectof being replaced by a provincial gov-ernment appointee while the proposedreductions proceed anyway.

It’s not pretty any way you slice it.It’s a system where trustees try to makethe best of it from within or they take astand that’s largely symbolic becauseeither way they end up being the fallguys for an issue that goes well beyondlocal board tables.

The best of intentions can only taketrustees so far. Eventually they runheadlong into the budget, which makesan often thankless job become darnnear impossible.

Strikingabalance

In Terrence Malick’s 2011award-winning movie Treeof Life, the real stars are thegiant oak trees that sur-round the O’Brien family’s

neighbourhood in Waco, Texas.Grey and gloomy during despairand brilliantly sunlit duringhappy days, they are a metaphorfor life.

Malick asks would we choosebetween acceptance or naturewhen we are under stress. Here inSouth Delta, our trees are understress and as advocates for thosetrees, we also have to choose.

What gives our public andprivate places meaning? Trees, whether it’s the giant tree deco-rated for Christmas in LadnerVillage or the 30-year-old yewtree that graces our front yard thatattracts compliments from pas-sersby.

That darn yew tree means wecan’t build a garage unless wechop it down. With no basementor place to store our stuff, weneed a garage, but there was nodebate, we chose the tree.

My neighbour, who is aVancouver police officer, is con-vinced our trees are under siegeby development. She can’t bearthe thought of waking up yetanother morning to the soundof chainsaws slowly dismantlingold and new growth trees in ourneighbourhoods.

Tree removal trucks are a com-mon sight in South Delta and myneighbour points to a house thatlost eight old growth trees in oneday. “How is that possible?” sheasks.

But there’s hope on the munici-pal side. We’ll see more treesplanted over the next five years asthe Corporation of Delta fulfillsa mandate to plant 5,000 trees, increasing our urban forest andproviding a natural pollutionreducer.

Then there’s the Trees forTomorrow campaign that offersyou two free trees to be plantedon municipal property that sur-rounds your home. Maples, chest-nut, dogwood and magnolia arejust some of the incredible varie-ties up for grabs. Fill out a simpleapplication and promise to waterthem, and you’ll have a carbon

dioxide sucking machine that canincrease your property value andprevent crime.

Be tree aware and reportanyone you think is defyingDelta’s tree protection bylawsas the municipality will investi-gate. Trees get stressed out justlike us. They need good soil, water, space to breath and protec-tion from predators.

This has been a beautifulspring with trees blossomingto perfection. Most have leavesnow that will shelter us fromthe sun and wind and providehomes for our birds. So newcom-ers and locals, plan your gardenaround trees, make a commit-ment to care for them, plant treesand work with experts to incor-porate designs that maintain ournatural environment if your homeis up for redevelopment.

How we react to change tells usa lot about ourselves, includingwhat we value and what we arewilling to sacrifice. I don’t chooseacceptance, I choose nature andthe protection of it under stress.

Like the Buddha who attainedenlightenment while sitting underthe Bodhi tree, we can only hopeothers will see the light throughthe trees too.Ingrid Abbott is a freelance writ-

er who loves to look at trees andenjoys them year round, despitehaving to clean up after them.

Editor:For the last 45 years

of my life in B.C., I haveoften visited hospitals tosee friends and familyhospitalized for variousailments from open heartsurgery to emergencyadmission because of a fallat the hockey rink, alwaystaking for granted theethos of dedication andcompassion of all involvedin the hospital industry.

One may see the docu-mentary, photographsand write-ups of placeslike Lake Louise or theGrand Canyon umpteentimes, but only whenyou encounter it for real

do you truly realize andappreciate the grandeur ofthe spectacle.

From 2:30 a.m. on April22 when my wife rushedme to Delta Hospitalbecause of a seriousabdominal pain until theevening of April 26 whenI was finally cleared to gohome, I had a firsthandopportunity to appreci-ate the grandeur of theunique health systemthat Canadians are luckyto have but often take forgranted.

What amazed memostwas that apart from thecompassion and dedica-tion of all concerned, my

standing in society did notmatter with the treatmentthey accorded me. I couldhave been a wealthy manor a humble hamburgerflipper, the staff at DeltaHospital would not havedone anything differently.

I take this opportunityto thank and congratulateall from the doctors, tech-nicians, galley workers, desk clerks, custodians, volunteers and especiallythe nursing staff for theirdedication to their jobs. Iam humbled by the expe-rience. God bless themall and our unique healthcare system.R.H. (Rusty) Deshmukh

Editor:Re: Pathetic attempt to

discredit Trump, letter tothe editor, April 27

I have to take issuewith Pete Rowlands’ letterregarding theOptimist’scartoon about DonaldTrump. Calling it an “asi-nine display of childishgarbage” and “a patheticattempt at humour”accords the “artist” andthe editor more credit thanthey deserve.

This vile piece of gut-tersnipe graffiti, likeninga bellicose billionaire

to the author of theHolocaust; a U.S. presi-dential candidate to ahideous dictator, goesbeyond being a stunningdisplay of historical igno-rance and moral indiffer-ence.

In characterizing Trumpsupporters as violentthugs, the cartoon is agross insult to millions ofAmericans (and more thana few Optimist readers)with real and legitimateconcerns about uncon-trolled illegal immigrationand rising Islamic terror-

ism.After the Obama abomi-

nation, and as an alterna-tive to the pant-suitedmendacity of Shrill Hillor the wacko socialismof Crazy Bernie, a Trumppresidency would be lessFourth Reich than FirstAid.

I would like to addmy voice to that of PeteRowlands regarding theHitler/Trump cartoon.

I don’t think much more

needs to be said exceptthat I would suggest thatyou, if you were respon-sible for authorizing thiscartoon’s printing in theOptimist, and U. Ottho, thecartoonist, re-read yourhistory books regardingthe Holocaust and Second

Editor:Re: They’re not nations

in any practical sense, let-ter to the editor, April 22Steven Austin makes

many salient and compel-ling points in his letterabout First Nations.

Upon release of theTruth & ReconciliationReport, I asked count-less comrades: “Does thismean Canada has 627nations: one English, oneFrench and 625 indig-

enous?”Silly, really. It’s just

feel-good, guilt-drivenlanguage. I refer to the 625with complete respect as“native communities.”

Fact is we were allimmigrants, originally. Some by land-bridgeacross the Bering Strait.Others by water fromelsewhere. Somemigratedhere 10,000 years ago. Meas recently as 48 yearsback.

We can bosom grievanc-es our entire lives and livein a guilt-driven sinner-scape. Or we can, in thefamous words of MichaelCrichton, “Fix the prob-lem, not fix the blame.”

We need to embracenative communities as“us,” no longer derogatethese folks as “them.” Butneither should 625 com-munities think they areindependent “nations.”

Do they honestly thinksomebody else will pick

Another one that is veryirritating: Why do policetolerate cars with noisy

The people at Peoplemust be really, reallyexhausted. After all, they’ve just namedJennifer Aniston “theworld’s most beautifulwoman.”

Mind-boggling, if youask me. I mean, the lasttime I checked, there wereupwards of seven billionpeople on this planet —and at least half of thoseare female.

So Jen stands out in acrowd of 3.5 billion? Holymoly.

To arrive at their decla-ration, the folks at People—who likely don’t evennumber in the thousand—would have been up totheir eyeballs eyeballinggals across the globe.

No clue what theirmethodology entailed, but I imagine they weredispatched in pairs to eachof the seven continents. In their hands would havebeen a picture of Jennifer, which they would havechecked against everywoman they happenedto encounter — outsideigloos in Antarctica, pubsin Ireland and ball parks inthe U.S. of A.

“What do you think?”a People person would

have whispered to her col-league. They would havebeen, oh, watching a lineof people getting off a busin downtown Berlin, orstanding outside an operahouse in Melbourne, orheading off on safari inTanzania. “See anyonewho measures up to Jen?”

“Nope,” the colleaguewould have said. “She’sstill No. 1.”

Amazingly, MissPinnacle of Perfectionwas also tops in the worldback in 2004. So this isn’tthe first time those Peoplepeeps have been globe-trotting with their Jenniferpictures in hand.

I have to think, however, that there might have beenmoments —many of them—when the beauty search

crew would have stum-bled upon someone whopresented some pretty stiffcompetition— literally.Say, a highland lassie withhair the colour of gold. Ora woman from Rio withperfect sun-kissed skin.

Problem is, of course, there might have beensome head-scratching –not to mention panic inHollywood— if People’scover had declared:“Ainsley MacLachlan isworld’s most beautifulwoman.”

Anyway, the wholething strikes me as weird, creepy and more than alittle subjective. Besides, isn’t it time we got a littlemore creative with thisworld’s-most-whateverthing? Forget most beauti-ful or most handsome, Isay. Isn’t it about time weidentified the person—male or female — who hasthe world’s mostly finelymanicured toenails? Orquietest hiccups? Or curli-est hair?

Most beautiful? Yes,Jennifer, no questionyou’re attractive, but I’mkind of done with the pret-ty stuff. Don’t know thestate of your toenails, butPeople should really know.

The Alex Fraser Bridgewill be even busier thanusual over the next fewmonths.

It’s all thanks to con-struction on the agingPattullo Bridge that beganwith a closure last week-end and will be followedby ongoing work throughto October.

According to TransLink, drivers trying to make

their way to the PattulloBridge can expect signifi-cant traffic delays and con-gestion.

TransLink warned driv-ers taking the PattulloBridge should plan anextra 20 to 40 minutes oftravel time in the morningpeak period and 10 to 30minutes in the afternoonpeak period.

The bridge will haveonly one lane open in eachdirection.

It will also be closedto all traffic two nights aweek and one weekend amonth before being shutdown completely againduring the final weekendof September.

During a recent Deltacouncil meeting, MayorLois Jackson said thatconstruction means badnews for the Alex Fraser, asituation that will be madeall the worse because it’s atoll-free bridge.

She said removing thetoll on the Port Mann dur-ing the Pattullo construc-tion would help ease thecongestion by encourag-ing those who don’t wantto pay to use the otherbridge, a case that fell on

deaf ears.“I don’t think people

The Delta CommunityAnimal Shelter is puttingon a free class this week-end in an effort to tacklepet obesity.

The class will give petweight loss tips to currentand prospective pet own-ers, including informationon proper feeding prac-tices as well as ways totrick your pet into thinkingthey’re getting more food, when they’re actually get-ting less.

According to the shelter, overweight animals are aserious problem with 40to 50 per cent of dogs inNorth America consid-ered overweight. About 25per cent are classified asobese.

Obesity in animals cancause a number of compli-cations, including arthritisand joint injury, diabetes, skin issues and respiratoryproblems.

Brittanee Cornett, aregistered veterinary tech-nician with the shelter, says although overweightanimals may be cute, the

extra weight is negativelyaffecting their health.

“Obesity wreaks havocon their entire body, headto tail. It affects everything, and it does cut down ontheir life span, whichis what nobody wants,”Cornett says. “Feeding andhumans are the cause ofthat. Most of our animalsaren’t opening the fridgeand feeding themselvesduring the day, so thatleaves us as being the root

cause of most of theseproblems.”

Cornett says when put-ting a pet on a diet, own-ers need to be careful and

should consult witha veterinarian first.

“Quick, rapidweight loss withanimals can be fatal, especially with cats,”she says.

The class will beheld at the DeltaCommunity AnimalShelter on Sundayfrom 11 a.m. to

noon. Those looking toregister for the free classcan call the shelter at 604-940-7111.

Delta Gymnastics sure knowhow to throw a party.

It was sometime during their40th anniversary season whenthere was the opportunity to taketheir biggest competition weekendof the year to an entirely differentlevel.

On top of the annual DeltaInvitational, it was B.C.’s turn tohost the 2016 Western CanadianChampionships. Delta put togeth-er a successful bid but wasn’t doneyet. The Provincial Gymnaestradawas taking place at roughly thesame time and organizers seekedthat too.

The three events have cometogether for a one shot dealthat will showcase the sportin a huge way. The Best of theWest Gymnastics Fest runsfrom Thursday to Sunday at theRichmond Olympic Oval — featur-ing over 1,800 athletes, ranging ofall ages and ability.

“We have never had something

like this in B.C. before,” said DeltaGymnastics Director of MarketingCarlene Lewall, who has beeninvolved with the club since itsearly days in the mid-1970s. “Wecan easily say its largest competi-tion ever held in B.C. It may not bethe highest level like a Pacific RimChampionship but it’s a celebra-tion of the sport — participationand active for life.”

It’s taken months of planningand, finally, organizers havereached the homestretch. Theresponse has been beyond expec-tations.

The Delta Invitational typicallyattracts 750 competitors. Thatnumber has ballooned to over1,000 with additional entries com-ing from far away as Nunavut. There will be 250 athletes repre-senting their provinces at Westernsand another 500 competing inProvincial Gymnaestrada.

They were able to hold all threeevents over just four days thanksto the size of the Olympic Ovaland overwhelming cooperatesupport. The Westerns will run

from Thursday-to-Saturday andthe Delta Invitational Saturdayand Sunday. Gymnaestrada willalso take place over both week-end days, however, Saturday isexclusively workshops which willbe held at a partnering hotel —Sheraton Vancouver Airport.

Gymnaestrada is for for anyoneof any age or skill level and fea-tures a variety of performancesas a team. The event is not onlycompletely full, nearly 700 ticketsfor Sunday’s performances have allbeen sold. There is also expectedto be a big crowd for the Cash andCarry Cup— the pinnacle event ofthe Delta Invitational that featuresnational level athletes competingfor cash prizes to assist with train-ing.

“Gymnastics B.C. laughed atus when we first told them whatwe wanted to do,” said DeltaGymnastics executive director AnaArciniega. “We thought could real-ly celebrate the activity and sportof gymnastics.

“This is a unique event andthere won’t be another one. To do

it is pretty amazing and we thinkit will be a model for other sportsto partner with recreational sides. There should be a celebration ofsports at different levels. Werehoping its a new standard we aresetting.”

It also has taken a massivevenue like the Richmond Oval topull it off and working with theirstaff to put it all together.

“The Oval has been fantastic towork with,” added Arciniega. “Theyhave been there every step of theway to guide and help us. It hastaken a year to get to this point.

“All our partner hotels are soldout too. Richmond should behappy. The economic impact willbe significant.”

Delta will have eight athletes onTeam B.C. competing at Westerns.They include: Conor Edgson(National Open), Cole Schallig(Provincial 5), Que Bidewell(Provincial 4), Hunter Woodhead(Elite 3), Russell Woodward (Elite3), Lucas Lui (Elite 3), Ella Rogers(JO 9 2003-05), Sophie Anderson(JO 9 2003-05).

Islandersopenwithwins inVictoria andBurnabyIt wasn’t complete domination

but it was enough for the DeltaIslanders to open the B.C. JuniorLacrosse League season with apair of road wins on the weekend.

Despite being out-scored by acombined 15-5 margin in the finalperiod, the Islanders managedan 18-16 win in Victoria Saturdayand a 13-12 overtime victory at

Burnaby one night later.Delta looked to be in cruise

control in the provincial capitaluntil the hosts exploded for sixunanswered goals in the final 2:53of the game.

It was a similar script inBurnaby as the Lakers eraseda 9-4 deficit after 40 minutesto force overtime and actually

enjoyed an 11-10 lead until inter-mediate call-up LiamMcDonaldignited a three-goal Delta rally.

Tre Leclaire had a huge week-end with 18 points. The league’s2015 rookie-of-the-year had fourgoals and seven assists in Victoriaand two goals and nine helpersagainst the Lakers.

Local product Evan Messenger

is also off to a blazing start with 14points, including a hat trick andeight points in the opener.

Rookie Riley Taylor addedseven points.

RASA Summer League kicked off another seasonlast week with Division One rivals Delta Blaze andRichmond FC “A” squaring off.

The first half was very close with both sides gettingchances to take the lead, but it was Richmond whostruck first just before the interval on a header by TheoLorenz.

In the second half,Delta pressed hard for the equalizerand almost tied it when Brad Caldwell broke free in thepenalty area, only to see his shot hit the cross bar.

Richmond pushed back hard to extend its lead but

Blaze held them off.It wasn’t until 10 minutes before full time when

JimmyMillar struck a low hard drive from just outsidethe penalty area which foiled Richmond’s goalkeeper.

It seemed destined to be 1-1 result when a cross intothe Richmond penalty area caused a scramble. BradCaldwell fell to the ground only to find the ball drop tohis side and he hooked in the winning goal.

In Division Two action, defending champions RinoOriginals opened their schedule against Richmond FC’s“B” team.

After 20 minutes, Richmond took the lead on a penaltyas Mike Revell buried the 12-yard shot into the bottomleft corner. Minutes later, Rino found themselves down2-0 after Andre Riminac fired Richmond further ahead.

In the second half Rino, pressed to get back into thegame and, after 20 minutes, Arturo Salburan worked hisway through Richmond’s defence and scored on a lowshot to the corner of the net.

Both sides had opportunities to score again but Revellprovided some insurance when he fired a shot over the’keeper to cap a 3-1 win.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You canfigure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
