It’s all about achievingan important balance.

That was the themeVancouver Fraser PortAuthority president andCEO Robin Silvester con-veyed during a presenta-tion to the Delta Chamberof Commerce Tuesday.

The luncheon at theCoast Tsawwassen Inn wasan opportunity to hearhow Delta is viewed asvital in Canada’s growingtrade as well as the port’splans to build a secondcontainer terminal atRoberts Bank.

Silvester said it’s beendetermined that even aftercurrent facilities are maxi-mized, Terminal 2 will stillbe needed.

“You can see that stronggrowth with the port, 30million tonnes of growthin the last five years. Putthat in context: 30 mil-lion tonnes is the volumehandled by the Port ofMontreal in a year, whichis the second largest portin Canada. Thirty milliontonnes is close to whatWestshore (Terminals) willbe handling in one termi-nal here in Delta. So we’vealready grown in thisregion, this gateway, at thesize of the second largestport in Canada,” Silvester

said.“As we look forward,

we see the opportunity tohave the same amount ofgrowth again, another 30million tonnes.”

He said a considerableamount of environmentalwork has gone into study-ing the project, whichhas found there won’t besignificant adverse envi-ronmental effects. Thosefindings will be defensi-ble once the applicationis brought forward to a

review panel, Silvestersaid.

Going over several ofthe port’s environmentalinitiatives, Silvester noteda lot of work has gone intodefining what a sustain-able gateway should be allabout, which he called abalancing act. He said thethree core componentsto balance are economicprosperity through trade, healthy environment andthriving communities.

Regarding talk of an

inland port as an alterna-tive, Silvester said his portauthority is open to any-thing that helps facilitatethe smooth movementof goods, but it’s also themarket that will decide.

Looking forward topotential infrastructuredollars from the newfederal government tofacilitate the movement ofgoods, Silvester added thereality is that Roberts Bankis the best location for asecond terminal.

During the question-and-answer session,Silvester touched on avariety of topics, includ-ing responding to ques-tions from those fromRichmond who demandedto know what the port hadin store for Gilmore Farmon No. 8 Road. Silvesterreiterated how there’san alarming shortageof industrial land in theregion and that the portmight one day be forcedto covert the property. However, he noted there’s“no master plan” to con-vert farmland, adding theport is seeking a “betterconversation” on how tobalance the needs of theenvironment, farmlandand the national economy.

Silvester talkedabout the port’s whole-hearted support for theGeorge Massey TunnelReplacement Project andthe backing it found for iton both sides of the river, adding a federal environ-mental review would beup to Ottawa.

Asked about the con-troversial Fraser SurreyDocks plan to shipAmerican thermal coal,Silvester noted it’s not upto the port to come upwith trade policy but tofacilitate trade, adding thatproject has undergone anenvironmental review.

CONTINUED from Page 1Saying it would be ille-

gal for anyone to bring inbags of meat to try to baitbirds, Mike Brotherston,Delta’s manager of climateaction and environment, isn’t ruling anything out,but noted the North 40is heavily used by eaglesand it’s possible they’retransporting the food fromelsewhere, including thelandfill, farmland and preythey’ve captured.

Delta Community

Animal Shelter man-ager Sarah Jones recentlyissued an advisory onthe Ladner’s LandingFacebook page, posting amap of the area and cir-cling the locations whereeagles seem to congregatethe most.

She noted several Deltadepartments have beenworking to determinewhat or who is bringingmeat, bone and bag rem-nants into the area thathas made some dogs sick.

“Signage was placedto advise that feeding ofthe birds is not welcome.Today there was a pulleysystem noticed and wesuspected it was someoneusing an intricate trap forthe birds but it turned outto belong to the film crew,”Jones said.

“Looking at the evi-dence of where the bagsare in the trees, the activ-ity of the birds, historicalinformation about similarproblems in other areas

of the bog, etc., we havedetermined that the eaglesare most likely takingitems from the landfill andflying to these circled areasto eat their find so theyaren’t bothered by otherbird species.”

Some baiting mightoccur but it’s suspectedthe majority of the foodscraps and bags are fromthe landfill, she explained.

Jones told the Optimistbags have been seenstrewn high atop trees, so

whatever the eagles arenot eating is ending updripping to the ground.

“People who are feed-ing eagles are not throw-ing bags high up into thetrees, so we wrote the postjust to let people knowthat’s what we suspect ishappening. It’s happingin other nature areas,” sheadded.

If someone sees anindividual baiting birds, they’re asked to call theshelter at 604-940-7111.

Waterfront propertyowners could be forced tofurther beef up their sea-walls.

That was one of the rec-ommendations recentlyput forward to Deltacouncil in an engineer-ing department reporton flood response inBoundary Bay and BeachGrove. Those areas werehit with localized floodingin March due to a storm.

The problem is not somuch with the seasonaltide, but concerns overa storm surge created byhigh winds and heavyrain. Delta is looking atwhat further measuresshould be taken, includ-ing increasing the heightof the municipal seawallfrom 3.4 metres to 4.1metres to meet the antici-pated impacts from globalwarming and sea level rise.

“Given the significantfunding requirementsto increase the seawallheight, staff are recom-mending that staff inves-tigate options to requireowners at the time of rede-

velopment to either raisetheir seawalls or providean equivalent cash con-tribution,” the staff reportnotes.

Deputy director of engi-neering Hugh Fraser toldcivic politicians there’s stilla lack of consistency whenit comes to the municipaland private seawalls.

“We distinguishbetween Boundary BayVillage, where the seawallsare privately owned, andthe Beach Grove areawhere most of the seawallis under right-of-way andwas constructed underthe Fraser River Flood

Protection Program andis Delta’s responsibility. Some owners have raisedthe seawall there, mar-ginally, but what we’resuggesting is a consist-ent standard betweenBoundary Bay Villageand Beach Grove Villageand that we work towardachieving the 4.1 (metre)elevation consistentlythrough that community,”Fraser said.

The engineering depart-ment also noted there’sa need for a weather sta-tion to track wind speedand provide video on thewaterfront.

Delta’s police union iscalling for a third party toreview the investigationinto an on-duty shoot-ing that led to a second-degree murder chargeagainst one of its own.

Late last year, the DeltaPolice Association filed acomplaint with the Officeof the Police ComplaintsCommissioner in thehopes it would reviewhow the IndependentInvestigations Officeinvestigated a fatal 2012shooting involving Const.Jordan MacWilliams.

Association presidentS/Sgt. Ryan Hall said thisweek the union was toldthe commissioner neededpermission from the prov-ince’s deputy attorney gen-eral, who in his response, said he was directing theIIO to review the investiga-tion internally.

Hall said the policeassociation is not happywith the idea of the IIOconducting an internal

review and has petitionedthe organization to havean external third party, like the Alberta SeriousIncident Response Team, that province’s policewatchdog, broughtin to conduct theinvestigation.

MacWilliamswas charged in2014 after anIIO investigationinto the shootingdeath of MehrdadBayrami during anarmed stand-offwith police at aNewWestminstercasino. The officerwas a memberof the MunicipalIntegratedEmergencyResponse Team.

After the IIO submitteda report in 2013, Crowncounsel approved thesecond-degree murdercharge, which was stayedlast summer.

Hall said the union hasconcerns that some evi-dence had not been gath-ered by the IIO, specifically

why the office chose not tointerview key witnesses.

“Our other concern hadto do with the decision togo to trial by direct indict-ment,” Hall said.

Usually, a personaccused of a crime has theability to have a prelimi-nary hearing where thejudge decides if there isenough evidence to sendthe case to trial. In thecase of direct indictment, the preliminary hearing isbypassed.

Hall said the union isconcerned MacWilliams

was treated differentlythrough the investigationand indictment processbecause of his profession.

“Const. MacWilliamsis a Canadian citizen firstand foremost,” Hall said.“His occupation shouldnot have prevented himfrom having the same pro-cess as any other citizenwhile before the courts.

“The general publicexpects the police to betreated equally before thelaw. We, as police officers, agree completely with thatstatement and expecta-tion, and ask only that webe treated equally beforethe law as well.”

MacWilliams onlyrecently returned to activeduty after the final inves-tigation into the shoot-ing under the Police Act,which had to be put onhold when the criminalcharge was laid, was com-pleted. He was also calledto testify at a coroner’sinquest into the shooting.

“What’s lost in this isJordan lost two years of hislife to stress,” Hall said.

After the ferry terminal, itmight well be the next mostrecognizable entity in town.

For more than 30 years,Splashdown Park has

helped put Tsawwassen on the map, welcoming sliders and sun worshippersfrom throughout the region for a wholelot of summertime fun.

It’s also been a favourite destina-tion of locals to the point where mostpeople around here have some sort ofmemory or story from time spent at thepark.

Splashdown opened just as I wasexiting my teens, so most of my recol-lections are of outings since my sonwas born, which to be fair to the place,is a venue better suited to the youngergeneration. I know I’d have differentmemories if it had been around when Iwas a kid.

I vividly remember my heart racing, fearful that I had broken my youngson’s leg, after I landed on top of himat the bottom of one of the kiddieslides. We had started side-by-side, butbefore we hit the shallow water, he hadsomehowmanaged to get in front ofme, which made for a collision at thebottom of the pool he had no hope ofwinning.

Once he graduated to the biggerslides, I can remember hoofing my wayto the top of the giant staircase, only tostand in line while the wind whippedoff the Strait of Georgia. The kidsaround me didn’t even seem to noticebut not even my added insulation wasenough to keep me warm, although Imust say it was sufficient to slowmedown on the slide so the next sliderroutinely caught up.

It wasn’t until he got old enough toblast around the park on his own thatSplashdown took on a newmeaning asa lawn chair, cold beverage and somereading material ensured we couldboth enjoy our time at the iconic spot.

Sadly, 2016 will be the last seasonto make those memories, although it’shard not to have seen the writing onthe wall given all that’s going on at theTsawwassen First Nation these days, tosay nothing of the price of real estate inthe Lower Mainland. It was inevitablethat a business that only operates threemonths a year but requires a big chunkof land was living on borrowed time.

That time will be up once summeris in the books, which means you stillhave an opportunity for one moresplash and one final memory.

If you watched the news lastweek you may have seenwhere FortisBC announceda major deal to create andexport LNG (liquid natural

gas) from Delta to Hawaii. This deal has been in the works

for some time and represents thefirst export of B.C. LNG that theprovincial government can pro-claim.

Is it a big deal? Yes. Is it a gooddeal? Yes.

Natural gas will flow down fromNortheast B.C. along the cur-rent pipelines and then be com-pressed in an expanded facility atTilbury.

It will be loaded onto tankersat the dock being planned andshipped to Hawaii where it willreplace diesel and oil feedstockfor Hawaii Electric for 20 yearswhile it prepares for carbon-freepower generation.

To do this Fortis will create anew company to compress thegas for export. It needs a dock andexport permit from the NationalEnergy Board. Presto, WespacMidstream LLC already has thepermit from the NEB and is get-ting approval for the dock on the

Fraser River.Unlike most LNG projects,

this one will use hydro power tocompress the gas. The power willcome from the Ladner’s Arnottsubstation along a yet to be con-structed power line — if agree-ment with farmers and Delta canbe gained. The environmentalbonus is that no significant green-house gas will be produced at thissite.

So what’s not to be liked? Theadditional power will come fromthe grid that will need the powerfrom Site C before long. How thepower is transmitted from Arnottto Fortis may be easy or conten-

tious — too soon to know. The really good news is else-

where —Hawaii is taking signifi-cant steps to convert from dirtyfuels to a clean fuel enroute tosolar and wind energy. That’sprogress.

Delta will gain an increase intaxes as the capital investment inthe storage and processing facil-ity will be in the billions. Fire riskwill not likely be much different—mainly carefully controlled bydesign and by many checks, bal-ances and procedures.

The main caution is that weare seeing a major gas facilitybeing built within the communitywhereas most facilities of thiskind are required to be locatedaway from housing and popula-tions and located within designat-ed major petrochemical areas.

Stay tuned as the deal is notyet done. It needs approvals fromseveral levels of government, including the State of Hawaii, which wants the conversion tocarbon-free generation to pro-ceed much more rapidly.Ian Robertson is a graduate

chemical engineer and a three-decade resident of South Delta.

Editor:Re: Feds double funding

for summer jobs in Delta,May 20

Recently Delta MP CarlaQualtrough announcedthe federal governmentis doubling funding forthe Canada Summer JobsProgram for youth inCanada. On the surface itsounds like a good idea tooffer more employmentopportunities to youth viawage subsidies during thesummer when they are outof school, but in fact it is adiscriminatory practice. Iwill try to explain why.First of all, how does the

federal government defineyouth? Canadian Heritagedevoted a two-page brief-ing note to this question, and concluded that somegovernment programs arefor youth age 12 to 17 andothers are for youth age 18

to 35. Thirty-five?In order to be eligible

for the Canada SummerJobs Program, an applicantmust be between 15 and30 years of age at the startof the employment, havebeen registered as a full-time student in the previ-ous academic year andintend to return to schoolon a full-time basis in thenext academic year.

By limiting a wage sub-sidy program to partici-pants based on their age,the federal governmentis allowing employersto discriminate againstother potential job appli-cants over the age of 30.Therefore, the governmentis guilty of age discrimi-nation and is violatingSection 15 of our Charterof Rights and Freedoms.

As a mature studentwho is retraining for

another career via nightschool and distance edu-cation, I am not eligible forthe Canada Summer JobsProgram because I amover the age of 30. Rightnow, that means I am notable to compete for sea-sonal jobs in many localmunicipalities, non-profitsand small businesses.

The illusion that allyouth in Canada areunemployed or under-employed, and need tobe given special access toemployment programs, isjust that, an illusion.

The Canada SummerJobs Program is not beingfairly applied, and shouldbe reconsidered. It’s timefor Ottawa to redefineyouth as people aged 12to 18, and to treat all otheradults equally under thelaw. It’s only fair.

Editor:My wife and I are ardent

play enthusiasts and seea lot of plays of varyingprice ranges. We saw Shrekthe Musical, done by thestudents of South DeltaSecondary, and considerthe $15 ticket price moneywell spent.

We have never had somuch fun at a play thanwhat these performersdelivered. If you weren’tsmiling in amazement, you were gut wrenching inlaughter. Our faces hurt bythe end because of all thelaughter.

Shrek, the poor Ogre

who was kicked out of hishome at the age of seven, was brilliant. Donkeyhelped him throughoutthe mission and was hilar-ious, while Lord Farquaadnever left his role evenwhen he was in the back-ground making hilariousfacial and body move-ments.

There were so manyfunny characters that Ikeep suddenly thinkingof — Pinocchio, the ThreeLittle Pigs, Three BlindMice, Gingy, The Gay Wolfand especially the threePrincess Fionas, each withfabulous voices — even

though it’s been more thana week since we saw theplay.

My hat is off to the per-formers but I would beremiss if I didn’t thank andcongratulate the wholeproduction crew, orches-tra and, of course, theteachers of South DeltaSecondary.

Art is the cornerstoneof civilization. I hopeour trustees rememberthat when they are doingbudgets and ensure theseyoung folk will be able tocontinue to develop theirskills and talents.

Khal Drogo came to the shelter in an odd predicament - he was a daddy! Oftentimes in the cat world male cats usually don’t seem to stick around to raise theiryoung but for some reason this big orange tabby boy seemed to. We don’t knowfor sure that he’s the father of Khaleesi’s seven kittens but there’s an awful lot oforange in there! Khal was a bit unsure of people when he first came into the shelterbut it didn’t take long for him to realize we were okay. He’s still getting used to usbut food and gentle pets seem to be the way to this rough boy’s heart. Khal is fullylitter box trained and loves to eat! We aren’t sure yet how he’ll be with other catsas he had some wounds from cat fights but time will tell. It will be safer that Khalbe adopted to a home with adult children or adults only as he’s still nervous aroundpeople. Khal Drogo has been neutered already and is patiently awaiting a dental.

Community

After her husband diedtwo years ago, Trudy’s(not her real name) sonand daughter decided itwas time for her to giveup her house and moveinto an assisted livingfacility. During one of ourvisits she confided to me,“I don’t feel like I belonganywhere… everyone’svery nice here… I comedown for my meals, butthen there’s nothing to do,so I go back up to my littleapartment.”

When I asked her aboutrecreation programs andactivities, she dismissedthem, saying, “Oh, yes, they have casino nightsand such, but I need morethan just playing Bingogames.”

While many seniorsadjust and even thrive inassisted living facilities,

others like Trudy strugglefor purpose and meaningand a sense of community. It is these spiritual benefitschurches can provide, and yet many seniors stopattending religious ser-vices after they move intoassisted living.

While the most obvi-

ous reason for individu-als to attend church is topractice their faith, stud-ies have shown there aremany other benefits tobeing part of a religiouscommunity.

Attending church notonly breaks seniors’ senseof isolation by gettingthem out into the commu-nity, but it can also helpthem see all the good inthe world, and give theirlife a deeper meaning.

Transportation oftenis the reason why seniorsstop attending church. Ifyou are senior or lookingafter a senior who missesbeing part of a religiouscommunity, please giveone of the local churcheson this page a call. I knowthey would be happy toassist you in re-connect-ing.

“This was an initia-tive we thought would beworthwhile,” said GreenTeam teacher coordinatorPaula Lewry, adding thegroup has been workinghard fundraising since itstarted a couple years ago.

Students built approxi-mately 40 bee houses, which are now hangingoutside the school.

The Green Team came

up with criteria, includingcreativity, use of recyclablematerials and design, tojudge the houses.

“We’ll also look at theend of June, before school

is out, to see which houseattracts the most beesto it,” said principal BobThompson, who initiallybought bee eggs for thehouses.

He explained a numberof the school’s classes aredoing bee units and thatthe school recently hada science fair where beeswere an encouraged topic.

How Do I Get Help?Help IS out thereThere are many resourcesin the community to helpseniors get the support theyneed. Once the needs areidentified, the challenge isto know where to look andwho to ask. A referral toFraser Health, through theirCentral Intake phone line(604-953-4965), is a greatplace to start. Fraser Healthwill assign a case managerwho will assess theindividual’s personal careneeds, inform the person ofwhat help can be providedby the health authority andmake recommendationsand referrals to otherprofessionals. The cost ofsupport services providedthrough Fraser Health isbased on the income ofthe senior (free to manylow income seniors).Unfortunately, it can takeseveral weeks before acase manager is available,in the meantime, search

the internet if you can, goto senior and recreationcenters, doctors’offices, pharmacies and readthrough your localnewspapers to findinformation directories, flyers or ads for localservices. Ask around, talkto friends and neighbours, the stranger next to youon the bus even; manypeople have faced thesame or similar challengesand will happily share theirknowledge. There are manygreat services out there toaccess, free, by donationor for a fee. Anotherimportant point to note isthat Fraser Health will onlyprovide assistance withpersonal care needs suchas bathing and dressingnot preparing meals orcleaning your home. Forthose kinds of services(often called hospitalitysupports) there arecompanies that will come to

your current home (MealsonWheels, housekeepers, landscapers). If you find ittoo difficult, or just don’twant, to deal with multipleproviders, you could lookto move to seniors’housinginstead. There you wouldhave all the hospitalitysupports provided by asingle provider, have manyopportunities for socialand recreational activitiesas well as someone closeby should you have anemergency. Help can befound for any situation, bepersistent, ask questionsand don’t give up.

Howtocorrectlyworkout forweight loss

Working out is good forus. This is an absolute factthat we know.

We also know that inorder to lose weight, weneed to start working outtoo.

Yes, fine looking abs arefirst made in the kitchen(or more precisely visitingthe kitchen less), but it isalso beneficial to exerciseon a weekly basis to helpburn the fat that is alreadyon our bodies, increaseour lean muscle mass aswell as work off the calo-ries we eat throughout theday.

But what should we doon a weekly basis to effec-tively burn the fat?

Should we perform car-

dio or weights, or both? And if so, does it matterwhich one we do first?

To help you programthe best workouts for yourweek (and in turn help youlook better naked), I havewritten out exactly whatand when you should bedoing for your workouts toeffectively lose weight.

However, before we diveinto that I need to explaina couple of the energysystems in the body thatneed to be hit for the bestresults.

The anaerobic sys-tem depends on energysources that are alreadystored in the muscles. Thissystem is utilized when weperform short-lasting, yethigh intensity, activities. Some examples: sprinting, running up Fred Gingellstairs or doing a hard set ofweights.

Anaerobic training is thetype of training that burnswhen you workout. This isbecause the active mus-cles are running withoutthe use of oxygen and theyare becoming increasinglyacidic as the seconds tick.

Anaerobic exercise canonly last a few seconds to

about two minutes maxand has been shown toincrease our ability to burncalories (and therefore fat)well after our workout isfinished.

This is why we recom-mend this type of trainingfor weight loss. It is a greatway to train when youare short on time. You getthe most “bang” for yourfitness buck in the leastamount of time.

Now, if you are still ableto keep going after thetwo-minute anaerobicthreshold mark you haveswitched over to your aer-obic energy system. Thismeans you are now usingoxygen to help break downthe glycogen to fuel yourmuscles.

Aerobic exercise is anyworkout that is longer induration and medium toeasy in intensity. Someexamples are jogging andbike riding. Basically it’sany steady-state work-out where you maintainabout the same intensitythroughout.

To effectively burn thegreatest amount of calories(and therefore fat), youneed to hit both of these

energy systems. However,if done in a specific orderyou can really maximizeyour fat burning capabili-ties.

For instance, if youperform your aerobic, orcardio, workout after yourstrength training workoutyou will burn a higher per-centage of stored fat. Thisis because you burned thealready stored glycogen inthe muscle cells first dur-ing your strength workout.Afterwards, once whenyou hit the treadmill, you will start hitting yourstored fat cells faster.

As well, the researchpointing towards strengthtraining as a better way tolose weight is astounding— and it could not be anyclearer for those of us overthe age of 40.

You see, after the age 30we start to lose a percent-age of our lean musclemass with every passingyear. This lean musclemass is what helps ourmetabolic furnace runsmoothly and efficiently. We are better fat-burnerswith more lean musclemass.

Take away this lean

muscle mass and now youhave people who havenever had to watch theirweight before look downat their waistlines at 50years of age and think,“Where the heck did thatcome from?”

It came from adepressed metabolismdue to a lower lean musclemass, my friend.

There is also somegreat research on fastedcardio for weight loss (aswell as some equally greatresearch saying other-wise… haha).

The theory behind fast-ed cardio is that you startburning your stored fatfaster as a fuel, as opposedto the carbs stored in thecells.

I have tested this theoryand found it works for meand some of my clients.Try it yourself and see ifyou have success with it.PJ Wren is a local trainer

and writer who can helpyou do those strengthworkouts you should bedoing every week. Checkout her in-person grouptraining and online fitnessplans at: www.fitnesswith-pj.com.

7-Day Workout Plan

• Sunday: long, slowcardio. Perform an aero-bic activity for 40-60 min-utes, such as hiking or abike ride.

• Monday: 45-min-ute total body strengthworkout, finished offwith 15 minutes of inter-vals on the treadmill orStairMaster.

• Tuesday: fastedcardio first thing in themorning for 20 to 30 min-utes, yoga in the eveningto help you sleep.

• Wednesday: 40-min-ute total body strengthworkout, finished off with20 minutes of intervals onthe treadmill.

• Thursday: fasted car-dio 20 to 30 minutes andyoga or stretching after-wards, or in the evening.

• Friday: 45-minutetotal body strengthworkout, finished offwith 15 minutes of inter-vals on the treadmill orStairMaster.

Climbingtheironway—ViaFerratainOldQuebecJAMIE ROSSOptimist contr ibutor

When myQuebecCityguide toldme that

tomorrow I would beexperiencing somethingcalled Via Ferrata, shemust have been surprisedby my reaction, somethingshe undoubtedly wouldhave put down to the sub-tle nuances of language.

“Sounds delicious,” Ihad responded, dream-ing fondly of some kind ofpasta dish — a deliciouswhite wine, garlic andclam sauce over linguini, served up at the wonder-ful Bello Ristorante in OldQuebec.

What a miscalcula-tion, I am thinking, as Ifind myself pressed tightagainst a sheer rock walladjacent to the ChuteMontmorency, clippedonto a re-bar hook by acarabiner and bungee. The roar of the 83-metrewaterfall is deafening justto my left.

If I check my footholds,I can see some 60 metresbelow the jagged rocks

at the base of the cliff, whipped by the sprayfrom the cascade. If I tiltmy head and peer above,I see only the wire cableand metal rungs curvingup the rock face, like somemanufactured but veryreal climbing wall. Did Imention I am not fond ofheights?

This, apparently, is ViaFerrata — Italian for “ironway.” The type of climbwas invented by the Italianarmy during the FirstWorld War as a means toget troops and equipmentthrough the DolomiteMountains. Now it hasbecome a popular touristactivity, where a series ofladders, rock-embeddediron rings, cables andsingle rail bridges enableamateur climbers, appar-ently with a bit of a deathwish, to scale and traverserock faces, fissures anddeep chasms, and thusexperience the kind ofadrenalin rush normallyreserved for extreme rockjocks.

Whistler is the onlyplace in B.C. to offer tours, but its widespread accept-ance in Quebec is now afait accompli.

Montmorency FallsPark is located a fewmin-utes from Quebec City.Between river and cliffs,it is one of the most spec-tacular sites in the prov-ince. It is a beautiful anddramatic landscape whenobserved from the cablecar that I travelled up in, orfrom within the comfort ofthe Manor Montmorencyat the top.

On this 270-metreclimbing route, I’m notsure if I am as impressedas I should be by thebreath-taking view— andto put this into perspec-tive, this waterfall is30 metres higher thanNiagara Falls.

It is true that on this ViaFerrata you are accompa-nied by an accomplished,park-certified guide, but for some reason ourexpert has chosen me tolead the group, while heconcentrates more on apretty young climber fromChicago.

Now, as I laboriouslyclamour up what I hopeis the final stretch ofthe Route Torrent deMontmorency, I am justtrying to concentrate onthe small world right in

front of me.Unclip one of the safety

lines (never both), moveupward a step and clipback in. Repeat.

From below the guideyells up instructions.“James,” he shouts, “youwill find it easier if youmove yourself back fromthe wall a bit.”

Yes, I suppose he isright, and it might alsosave the bloody scratchesI am inflicting to my nose, lips and eyebrows. Still,

not really wanting adviceat this juncture, I yellsomething back down tohim that we will not repeathere.

Perhaps I am sound-ing like I didn’t fully enjoythis activity, and certainlythere might have been abrief time when I ques-tioned what I was doing.I had been put outsidemy comfort zone, but, asI climbed over the crest ofthe rock wall at the top ofthe chute, this made the

feeling of having accom-plished something thatmuch better.

It is a fantastic andrewarding adventure. Eventhe zipline that I had fret-ted about before headingout on the iron way, theone that will whisk us overthe brink of the falls onour journey back to themanor, is nothing after theclimb.Travel Writers’ Tales is

an independent travel arti-cle syndicate.

Summer Camps

To many people sum-mer camp for kids mightappear like nothing morethan fun and games. However, a study conduct-ed in the past few yearssupports what camp direc-tors have been saying fordecades: Camp is a settingfor positive youth develop-ment where invaluablelife skills are acquired andnurtured.

“The major changes in[campers’] growth speakstremendously of the sum-mer camp experience,”says Troy Glover, thedirector of the Universityof Waterloo’s HealthyCommunities ResearchNetwork.

Glover spearheadedthe Canadian SummerCamp Research Project, the first-ever nationwideand international researchand evaluation project ofits kind. Conducted in thesummer of 2010, the studytracked 1,288 campers, aged three to 18, from 16overnight and day campsacross Canada.

The results demon-

strated that for “bubble-wrapped” youth who havebeen over-programmedand overprotected, campprovides a safe environ-ment to freely learn, growand develop their capabili-ties.

Summer camp, accord-ing to the study, fostersemotional intelligence (orEQ), self-confidence, inde-pendence, healthy living, environmental awareness, leadership and other skillsthat prove beneficial longinto adulthood.

Here are five critical lifeskills that get a huge boostat summer camp:

1.How to get along withothers: Talk to any campalumni and you’ll likelyhear how some of theirmost meaningful friend-ships and lessons on how

to get along with otherscame from camp.

2.How to overcomechallenges: It’s time tounwrap the “bubble-wrapped” generation.Saturated with 24-hournews highlighting crimes

in their communi-ties, many parentstoday are overpro-tective of their chil-dren.

3.How to get fit:A recent StatisticsCanada study foundthat only seven per

cent of youth aged six to19 got the recommendedhour a day of exercisethey need. Enter summercamp.

4.How to love the Earth:“Children need nature forthe healthy developmentof their senses and, there-fore, for learning and crea-tivity,” says Richard Louv.

5.How to lead: Whenit comes to developingstrong leaders, camp pro-vides both implicit andexplicit training.Article provided by

Summer Camps

Choosing the right campfrom among the numberand variety of camps avail-able can be overwhelming.Parents need to begin bytalking with their childand together creating alist of requirements andexpectations. They shouldconsider:

• The child’s interestsand the activities he hopesto experience at camp.

• The desired character-istics of the camp site.

• The distance fromhome that is acceptable tothe child and his family.

• The length of stay.• The child’s physical,

medical, dietary and emo-tional needs.

• Whether the child iswilling to go alone or pre-fers to go with a friend.

• Whether a single sex orco-ed camp is preferred.

• Whether a secular orreligiously-based camp ispreferred.

• The limitations of thefamily’s budget.

Parents often ask atwhat age a child shouldbegin overnight camp, however considering read-iness is more significant

than age:• Can the child make his

own bed and look after hisown belongings?

• Has the child spent anight away from home ata friend’s or grandparents’house?

• Is the child asking togo to camp?

• Has the child attendedday camp? Day camp isan introduction to someaspects of the overnightcamp experience —meet-ing new friends, beingcared for by a counsellorand participating in campactivities with other chil-dren.

Throughout the selec-tion process, the potentialcamper should participateby visiting websites andthen browsing printedmaterial or a DVD provid-ed by the camp on request. The more the child isinvolved in the decision, the greater the chance of asuccessful outcome.

After reducing the fieldto a few possibilities, thefamily should compile alist of questions and speakto the director. No ques-tion is too direct where

a child’s safety and well-being is the top priority.

• Is the camp accreditedby its provincial campingassociation?

• Who is the director?• What are his/her qual-

ifications and experience?• What is the camp’s

mission statement or phi-losophy?

• What can a childexpect to gain from theexperience?

• What written andpracticed policies ensurecamper safety?

• Who is directly respon-sible for a camper at alltimes?

• Who are the counsel-lors? How old are they? What are their qualifica-tions? What training dothey receive?

• What is the percentagereturn of staff?

• What is the camper-to-counsellor ratio?

• What is the percentageof returning campers?

• Who are the campers? Are they local or interna-tional?Article provided by

Summer Camps

By now you may havebrowsed camp guides, vis-ited as many websites aspossible and asked otherparents for their tips tohelp narrow down yourchoices. So what’s the nextstep in your summer campsearch?

Well, there’s nothingquite like a camp visit. Ifyou have never visited asummer camp, do so andyou won’t want to leave.Summer camps welcomethe chance to show youaround and answer allyour questions. Call aheadto arrange a tour, andmake sure to bring yourchild along.

As part of your research, try to visit camps you’reinterested in the summerbefore you plan to registeryour child. Some campshold information sessionsduring the year. This is agreat opportunity to meetthe camp director, sen-ior staff and, often, othercampers and parents.

Bring along a list ofquestions to ask so youdon’t forget what’s impor-

tant to you. Below aresome things to considerwhile researching camps:

• Camp’s philosophyor vision: How does thistranslate into the day-to-day life of the camp?

• Camp leadership andgovernance: What is thedirector’s background? How long has he or shebeen involved with thecamp? Is the camp gov-erned by a board or anowner-operator?

• Staff qualifications:What kind of training docounsellors receive? Doany have certification inspecialty areas?

• Camp environment:What is the “feel” of thecamp? Is it a welcomingplace? Is it well main-tained and secure?

• Facilities and equip-ment: Is there a maindining hall, nurse’s office, cabins or tents in the caseof a residential camp? Arethere appropriate activ-ity areas at day camps? Is there a playing field, waterfront or swimmingpool? Special equipment

or facilities? What is theoverall condition?

• Program: What activi-ties are available? What isa typical day’s schedule?

• Activity time: How docampers interact with theircounsellors and otherstaff? What is the camper-to-counsellor ratio?

• Age-appropriateness:Given your child’s ageand stage of development, what programs would begood choices? Is therea range of ages amongcampers in each sessionand how is that handled?

• Health, safety andwell-being: What medi-cal staff is on-site? Whatemergency policies andprocedures are in place? How does the camp dealwith homesickness? Howare behaviour and disci-pline issues handled?

• Fee: What’s includedand what’s extra?

• Camp life: Do campersseem engaged and happy? Can you picture your childin the setting?Article provided by

Summer Camps

Camp Qwanoes onVancouver Island turns50 this year — and a giantcelebration is planned allsummer.

About 200 campersattended the first camps in1966. Since then numer-ous activities have beenadded, staff now comefrom all over the world, programs are offered year-round, and almost 4,400campers came to camplast summer.

“We always offer newadventures each year,”says executive directorScott Bayley. “We knewwe needed to do some-thing extra special forour 50th so we’re addingsomething called the JetStream where you can fly1,000 feet through the airon a zipline from the bankoverlooking the ocean tothe heart of our Aqua-Parkat Qwanoes Beach.”

At the beach, camp-ers can go wakeboarding, scale a 14-foot tall iceberg, soar through the air on theBlob, splash down floating

slides, or even play on agiant floating teeter totterwith their friends.

“Sure, we’ve added newbuildings, many morecampers and many newactivities, but if a camperfrom 1966 came back for avisit they’d find the campthey loved as a child isstill here,” says Bayley.“The deep love for kids, the sense of family andbelonging, wonder andadventure, and love of lifeto the full — it’s all here, nothing has changed.”

Bayley says they can’twait to see what the futureholds, so with that inmind, the camp’s themefor this year is Just GettingStarted.

Qwanoes is located ina spectacular ocean-frontsetting at the edge ofMaple Mountain, about anhour north of Victoria inCrofton. Over 75 activitiesare offered for camperswho come from VancouverIsland, Greater Vancouverand beyond.

“There is something for

everyone—we have lotsof amazing land activitiestoo like outdoor laser tag, archery, skateboarding, and adventures on ourchallenge course in thetrees. Fun is a huge part ofeach day,” says Bayley.

“But what really makesa week at Qwanoes sospecial is that we love kids. Each week almost 200carefully-screened stafffrom about 12 countrieswork together as a team toprovide the greatest weekof a child’s life. Qwanoesis a safe place where kidsare not only accepted butvalued.”

In our fast-paced,plugged-in world, campis an ideal opportunity forkids to experience outdooradventure and to connectwith others from all kindsof backgrounds.

Qwanoes is a Christiancamp, and an ideal placefor fun-filled, life-changingadventure. Check out thesummer 2016 video atwww.qwanoes.ca/sum-mer/media.

Tigers triumph inRichmondBantamAAA teamshow they are provincial contenderswith tourneywinMARK BOOTHmbooth@delta-opt imist .com

A year ago they proved to beno expansion pushover. Now theDelta Tigers are legitimate provin-cial championship contenders.

The Bantam AAA baseball teamconfirmed that status by capturingRichmond City Baseball’s QueenVictoria Day Invitational over thelong weekend. The Tigers rolled tofive straight victories in what wasconsidered the most deepest fieldin the tournament’s history. Deltadefeated the host Chuckers 3-0 inthe championship gameMondayafter hours earlier knocking offAlberta’s Okotoks Black Dawgs3-2, the defending champion.

The Tigers made an instantimpression in 2015 as a first-yearprogram thanks to the supportand talent from Delta’s threeminor baseball associations —Tsawwassen, Ladner and NorthDelta. They were one of eightteams to earn provincial berthsand narrowly missed out onadvancing to the semi-finals.

Cam Frick was named B.C.Minor Baseball’s U15 coach-of-the-year for his efforts. Thesophomore bench boss says the2016 squad is set-up to succeedfurther thanks to a roster full ofsecond-year players and plenty ofpitching depth which bodes wellfor tournament play.

“Last year, we came in as a bigunderdog and now teams are tak-

ing us seriously,” said Frick. “Weare seeing a lot of the teams bestpitchers every time out and it hasbeen good for us. It gets us in agood situation and mentally pre-pared in that we are used to see-ing good pitching.

“We made the call to go with 14players this year. We took a cou-ple of extra guys mainly as pitch-ers and it’s showing now. We area deep team and hopefully (thistournament win) is a sign of moregood things to come.”

The Tigers received a solid out-ing from Caleb Cassie in their 7-5opening round-robin win overWhite Rock. Delta then rolled pastTri-City 8-3 to set up a quarter-final date with Victoria Black, fea-turing the third and fourth placeteams in the B.C Minor BantamAAA League respectively.

Ethan McDougall was readyfor the challenge and the Tigerscame through with a 7-3 win. Itwas then up to Sean Sasaki to facepowerhouse Okotoks and the leftywas superb in nearly going the

distance.Delta broke a 2-2 deadlock in

the bottom of the sixth and BraedyEuerby came on in relief to recordthe final two outs of the game.

Euerby, one of just two first-year Bantams on the team, gotthe call in the final and was look-ing to duplicate a 3-1 win overRichmond a month earlier. TheLadner native was outstanding, limiting the Chuckers’ talentedline-up to four hits and no walksin six innings of work.

He also received some timelydefensive plays on line drive hitsthat were turned into rally-killingdouble plays. The Tigers scoredruns in the first, third and fifthinning. It was all they would need.

Cassie got out of a bases loadedjam in the top of the seventh toearn the save.

“You have to give (Euerby)a lot of credit,” said Richmondhead coach Alex Klenman.”To beable to throw two pitches consis-tently for strikes at this age levelis tough. We would like to get

him again at some point. It waslike watching a replay (of the firstgame).”

Frick is all too familiar with theChuckers program, having playedunder Klenman for his second-year of Bantam back in 2008. Healso coached in Richmond beforemaking the move back to hishometown.

“A couple of times Alex cameover, looked at me and justsmiled,” laughed Frick. “He knowsI have him read pretty good. Theyare a very solid team.”

The Tigers roster also fea-tures: Sean Brownem ConnorBaily, Sean Heppner, JaredRomaniuk, John-Pablo Wilson,Dylan McLeod, Reilly Noble,Travis Miller, Matt Payne andMaxGhilarducci.

Extra innings.Sasaki has also been outstand-

ing at the plate in a lead-off role —batting .549 for the season with awhopping 29 stolen bases. He alsoleads the team in hits (39) andRBIs (19).

Tigers Sean Sasaki celebrateshis team’s 3-2 semi-final winover Okotoks.
